PS3 graphics chip going 65nm this Fall
In addition to talking movie downloads, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai confirmed at a business briefing yesterday (via Next-Gen) that the PlayStation 3 consoles produced after last holiday season all have the 65nm Cell processor (down from 90nm at launch). In addition, Sony will be slimming down the RSX graphics chips to 65nm this Fall.
The GPU shrinkage will make the PS3s cheaper to produce, use less energy and not heat up as much. That doesn't necessarily mean a price drop is imminent, but it does give the company some more breathing room to make up that $3.32 billion.

So when is the PS3 itself going to slim down like the PS2 did?
Jacksons @ Jun 26th 2008 5:39PM
It's not even 2 years old!
Bigfoot @ Jun 26th 2008 5:46PM
Tell that to the Nintendo DS. :P
Wes @ Jun 26th 2008 7:54PM
Yes, listen to Jackson! It has over 8 years left til its life cycle to lose the excess size!
Jacksons @ Jun 27th 2008 2:29AM
The redesign of the DS was a little more important. I sure as hell didn't get one until the Lite came out. Same goes for PSP, even though that was much less drastic.

It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small, small world
It's a world of laughter
A world of tears
It's a world of hopes
And a world of fears
There's so much that we share
That it's time we're aware
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small, small world
There is just one moon
And one golden sun
And a smile means
Friendship to ev'ryone
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide

Wow voted down to oblivion for no good reason. Now I feel like Fernando and I didn't troll Sony.
Note to self: In any Sony related article praise Sony to be upvoted otherwise you'll get downvoted at your own risk. Small world is still a meme.

You got downvoted for typing out the lyrics of a song solidly sitting in the Top 10 most irritating of all time. I hate that damned ride and thank God every day that I no longer live near Disney and have to take yet another relative who has to sit on that floating Hell on Earth.
j.howlett @ Jun 26th 2008 6:30PM
i think its for trying to start a meme. so everyone just skipped to the part where they got sick of it and voted you down.

Anyone else notice that the box it comes in is smaller too?
I expect a PS3 'slim' in a couple years at the earliest.
Titanium_Orchid @ Jun 26th 2008 5:41PM
Free upgrades for current owners.... please?
kobebryunt @ Jun 26th 2008 5:45PM
I would buy one in a heartbeat if they slimmed it down a bit. As it is it's too bulky

I thought it was discussed that the Cell would be produced at 45nm soon...
Here's hoping that both shrink down mas quickly.
strang @ Jun 26th 2008 5:50PM
Cell is already 65 nm. This is the RSX that's slimming down soon to 65 nm.

Isn't this even more markedly significant than because of helping Sony? It also shows a reversal on their idea of having a console that can multiple generations, and at the very least has shown they've gotten down from their pedestal of hubris.
Word Up, North Korea! @ Jun 26th 2008 6:39PM
this comment makes no sense
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 26th 2008 7:26PM
What are you talking about?
This is just a cost-reduction. Sony never said they wouldn't cost-reduce the PS3.
This doesn't show a reversal of anything and it doesn't say anything about anyone's hubris.
343 Guilty Fart @ Jun 26th 2008 6:15PM
Methinks this holiday will be a good time to buy a PS3 for meself.
Vcize @ Jun 26th 2008 6:47PM
This interests me greatly if it means it will quiet these things down, and I'll trade in my current 60gigger for it if so.
I was disappointed in the noise of the PS3. Don't get me wrong, it's 100000000x quieter than a 360. But people kept saying the PS3 is silent, but it's only silent in comparison to the jet engine that is the 360. Meanwhile, it's easily the 2nd loudest piece of consumer electronics I've ever owned and is louder than my computer that sits right next to it.
That would be all fine and dandy if it wasn't my movie player also.
So if they can really get these things silent, I'd definitely forgo BC for quietness. I don't mind the noise when I'm playing games on it, but I definitely notice it sometimes when I'm watching movies.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 26th 2008 7:28PM
I've had PVRs that are louder, but yes, this thing is loud compared to most consumer electronics.
I'd love to have a quieter one, and I'll think of upgrading at some point. But if this doesn't have hardware BC (and it won't), it'll be tough for me to dump my 60G.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Jun 27th 2008 5:42AM
Mine only gets loud when playing movies. Games don't seem to tax it as much.
Go figure.
FOXHOUND @ Jun 27th 2008 7:23AM
Yeah, it's loud!
-hides Dreamcast- :x
Josh @ Jun 26th 2008 7:31PM

THE ORIGINALS!
I'm awesome!
EcnobA @ Jun 26th 2008 8:30PM
i have the now 80gb whic is prety quiet if you ask me i even think my elite is louder when playing the discs
michas_pi @ Jun 26th 2008 8:51PM
Isn't that a picture of a Xenos from a 360?
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jun 26th 2008 10:52PM
Looks like its goodbye forever to hardware PS2 compatibility. : (
I hope they can keep improving the software compatibility with firmware updates. I know its time to move on but I'd like to play MGS3 and Chrono Cross on my PS3 without any issues.
I don't care about the die shrink right now, they need to fix the fucking Blu-Ray drives, a bunch of people, myself included have had issues with them. I'm going to wait to buy a PS3 again until its fixed.
Tim The Enchanter @ Jun 27th 2008 9:21AM
So, if I look at the image, that means it's actually the controller that's being upgraded to 65nm? WOAH! It will have the best LED light evar! :-P
Sora267 @ Jun 27th 2008 12:07PM
Not only that, it means the controller chips are on the OUTSIDE! (They're using a magnifying glass, not an x-ray.)
Tim The Enchanter @ Jun 27th 2008 6:20PM
WOAH! Good thing they're using the chip that's cooler, I wouldnt want to burn my hands. Awesome.
Robert Jones @ Jun 28th 2008 11:25PM
Funny, that is an image of the 360s Xenos (gpu). Here is one of the actual gpu in the PS3 http://media.ps3scene.com/images/opened/ps3_36.jpg
