WRUP: Bonus! Includes Lights Out game cart edition
After last week's heated discussion over the Atari Jaguar's bit count (we're siding with the 64-bitters and admitting error), we thought we'd highlight a system that is unquestionably 8-bit. As well as unquestionably failed in what it wanted to be. Still, this writer remembers picking one up at a Toys R Us, along with Mortal Kombat Trilogy, and enjoying the hell out of it until he finally found the Game Boy. Still, an internet-ready touch screen portable with PDA/lifestyle functions was ahead of its time.
Here's what we'll be playing this weekend. Be sure to let us know what games will be occupying your time!
Here's what we'll be playing this weekend. Be sure to let us know what games will be occupying your time!
- Alexander Sliwinski: I will be playing some Ticket to Ride on XBLA, which is one of those games that when you first start, it's a total, "This is it?" experience. Then about halfway through your first game the strategy reveals itself. Best part: No board game cleanup. I'll also be diving into the Wii Fit waters. I don't know how I feel about doing that yet, but I'm rationalizing it by saying it's gas not spent going to the gym. ($4 a gallon! Seriously!?!)
- Andrew Yoon: I still haven't finished Metal Gear Solid 4! Hopefully, I can clear another act this weekend. I'll also spend some more time with the very solid Battlefield: Bad Company (PS3), and Universe at War (PC).
- Griffin McElroy: I've already put an embarrassingly large amount of time into Final Fantasy Tactics A2, but my team of adorably rendered killing machines is starting to come together so nicely. I'll likely put a few more hours into that, and when I tire of turn-based strategy, I'll continue working my way through some Nintendo 64 classics (Majora's mask is less frustrating than I remember it being).
- James Ransom-Wiley: I'm gonna finally (hopefully!) get the few hours I need to finish MGS4 ... and then start the whole thing over again.
- Jason Dobson: With Pixar's WALL-E on the family's movie-going docket this weekend, my son and I plan to sit down and give the flick's video game adaptation a whirl. He's young yet, and has plenty of time left to learn of the soul-crushing disappointment that these sorts of games can be.
- Justin McElroy: I have nothing to play. Seriously, I've beat MGS 4, I've played most of the stuff I have, I'm stymied. I think part of the problem is that I don't really do most of my gaming on the weekends. Anyone else like that?
- Ludwig Kietzmann: I'm not sure what's going on with me, but I'm somehow afflicted with an urge to play the disappointing Ninja Gaiden 2 again. I think I'm going to fight that feeling with a different ninja fix, N+, as well a second round of Metal Gear Solid 4. And as soon as the sun sets, it's back to Condemned 2: Bloodshot.
- Randy Nelson: I foresee my relationship with Metal Gear Online finally getting serious this weekend. I'm determined to finally find a group of players who want to actually work together as, you know, a team. I'm fact, look me up if you're playing. Game ID is GrowlingFox. Other than MGO, I'd like to sneak on some Space Invaders Exteme and watch the new Futurama movie, The Beast with a Billion Backs.
- Ross Miller: If I have time for anything this weekend, it'll be five-starring all the drum tracks to Pixies' Doolittle album (currently have about 3 to go). Otherwise, it's trying to finish that underrated gem Grand Theft Auto IV and everyone's favorite off-the-grid game, "Let's clean the crap out of my apartment!"
- Chris Grant: After nearly two weeks straight of traveling, I'll invest my time at home into Metal Gear Solid 4 with the hope that I'll finally finish it. Acts 4 and 5, here I come!

I bought one of those as well. I remember a few years later, I cracked it open to see it's innards. I made a microchip necklace. :\
I still have it's mangled body in one of my dresser's junk drawers.
Damn! @ Jun 27th 2008 2:36PM
I am now obligated to try to get some of the more difficult achievements in Commando 3 on XBLA because a few of them have those damn awkward point values..."kill 200 enemies: 6 points!" Now I need to try to get the other two oddly-numbered ones - which are much harder to get - to even it out. I demand my gamerscore end in a zero or a five. Ugh.

I was going to make a "comment here if you think gas prices are ridiculous", but I don't wanna overload the server. :\
TheBasslineFiend @ Jun 27th 2008 2:49PM
Gas prices are ridiculous.
Oh...
I'll be playing some Patapon, maybe I'll finally finish Uncharted, and replaying MGS4 on Big Boss Hard.
samfish @ Jun 27th 2008 3:07PM
Gas is $4.25 where I am! GAAAH! That's GAME MONEY gas prices are officially cutting into now, damnit!
I'm thinking about buying a Vespa.
Mr Khan @ Jun 27th 2008 3:07PM
They peaked at $4.10 around here, but now they're sliding back at $3.95, and the psychological difference of those 15 cents is astoundingly comforting
Though i'm becoming a great tightwad.

Last time I filled up my tank, it was $52.19... T_T
And all I have is a Grand Am...

Gonna do me some Lego Indiana Jones. Probably going to pick up Grid. If I do get Grid, I'm going to splurge and get the steering wheel add-on for the Xbox.
deaftly @ Jun 27th 2008 3:20PM
Yeah its pretty bad now, places around me are now charging extra if you pay with a credit card. Alot of places have also been rigging their pumps to give you less gas without it saying somehow also.
playwhutyalike @ Jun 27th 2008 3:22PM
Why did that reply to you? Weird.
Yeah, gas prices suck. The Jeep Cheerokee sits, while the Hondas get all the drive time.

Dovi is in 1992 if anybody wants to know.
Vol @ Jun 27th 2008 5:16PM
I pay $3.95/gal here. It costs a $100 bill to fill up my Denali that gets 14.5 mpg. HOO rah!

Korova *of the highlands* @ Jun 27th 2008 5:45PM
Well, oil prices just hit a new high, so look at 5 bucks a gallon, here we come. Its like driving on milk.
I'm thinking of getting a scooter too, but then the money I spend on scooter will be more than I save on gas.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Jun 28th 2008 6:37AM
You think you have it bad?! The cheapest gas I could find was at 4.49 dollars. At the same time, I'm living in Orange County... a tank of gas costs me 75-80 bucks. =(
jonbo298 @ Jun 27th 2008 2:46PM
Didn't they port Resident Evil 2 to the Game.com? I keep thinking when I saw a commercial for it ages ago, they had RE2 on it.
McWeen @ Jun 27th 2008 2:57PM
Yes they did, Duke Nukem 3D also.

Battlefield: Bad Company, it's like a light-hearted Call of Duty 4. It's refreshingly different, and if you're not too busy boycotting it, I suggest giving it a try. I'm enjoying the hell out of the campaign.
Mal F4cti0n @ Jun 27th 2008 6:57PM
I will be playing the multiplayer to death on the 360. MP is the by far the best part of the game....second is the humor in the campaign.
Cheers!
McWeen @ Jun 27th 2008 2:58PM
I will admit I have one of these...with the box and everything intact.
Titanium_Orchid @ Jun 27th 2008 2:58PM
I'm lending my PS3 to a friend so he can play MGS4. I'll be playing the game of life!
Bootes @ Jun 27th 2008 3:44PM
So do I. And the only game I have is Lights Out that came with it.
Mr.ESC @ Jun 27th 2008 3:00PM
Some mario games until I get my hands on the Ps3 MGS4 bundle that should be avalible here next month and if my connection works today hopefully Team Fortress 2 and maybe a Quake game.
Draco Basileus @ Jun 27th 2008 3:03PM
Finished MGS4 last night, so now I will be finally finishing ES IV: Oblivion after two years of playing on and off. Just in time for Fallout 3 to come out this Fall.
That maybe replaying "Shadow of the Colossus", that game rules.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 27th 2008 3:04PM
Replaying MGS4 on harder difficulty. I only unlocked 4 emblems on my first playthrough is this about right? o_O Currently on second act, the game still rules and yes I'm watching just about all the cutscenes over :D
Also, (insert sound of ninja sword slicing here) I'm getting back to NG2. The game is damn difficult! Oh and just for the record to any achievement whores out there NG2 is not an achievement friendly game. Sure you rack up over 100gp in an hour but the rest are insane. =/
I'm broke so I cant go buy Battlefield BC just yet, maybe next week so I'll be on the Demo some more. Online MP is really fun.

Mr Khan @ Jun 27th 2008 3:10PM
Mine mirrors Griffin's: FFTA2 (which now that i've figured out that it's different from Fire Emblem, it's incredibly addicting), with a bit of Wrecking Crew to fill in the cracks
samfish @ Jun 27th 2008 3:12PM
I went to Toys R Us this week and got in on the buy 2 get 1 free DS games deal, so I'll be spending some quality time with Soul Bubbles, Kirby Squeak Squad and Super Princess Peach (I FINALLY FOUND IT!).
I'm also almost done with Okami, so if I have time, I might play that...and, of course, Wii Fit.
Also, I tell myself every weekend that I'm going to hook my Dreamcast back up and play some Space Channel 5 and Shenmue.
...but I never do.
Mr Khan @ Jun 27th 2008 3:25PM
idk, (and rabid OKAMI SPOILERS emerge here)
Okami's ending felt like a bit of a let-down. The boss was easier than Ninetails, which should not have been. Issun should have stayed with Ammy, at least until she fought Yami, and the final ascension to the celestial plane felt like it could've gone better. However, the scene where Issun distributes his depiction of Ammy did almost make me cry, and i felt the final boss was very inventive in how you had to earn your abilities back, i just felt that it was too easy (for a final boss anyway) overall
Mr Khan @ Jun 27th 2008 3:27PM
Check out Missingno.'s account. It's neat!
Markez (MKWii 4339-2878-5120) @ Jun 27th 2008 3:49PM
Agreed, I thought the ending was far too easy when I beat it on the PS2.
I'll be playing a mix of GTAIV and Boomblox!
samfish @ Jun 27th 2008 4:15PM
I thought Yami was a lot harder than Ninetails, myself. It might just be the length, though. It's a good 45 minute fight, if I recall.
Ninetails is easy if you have a large exorcism scroll and detonate it when he splits up. Most of them will surround you and chase you, so it's pretty easy to get most of them in the blast radius. After you take care of the little guys, he's a snap.
Yami is harder to me in that he takes so long to beat and he is, like you said, an inventive boss. I know I have to stock up on holy bones before I encounter him, at least. I guess Ninetails is harder in terms of straight up difficulty, though, since it's harder to dodge his attacks and whatnot.
heh- and yeah...the Issun actually part did make me cry :p

I do not remember if you were the one who said that the exclusive Naruto game for the PS3 was FGF (Fake Game Footage) but I thought I would share this video from PS3fanboy if you have not seen it. The game looks amazing. I am not a huge Naruto fan so I probably will not pick it up but the eye candy is giving me a tooth ache.
Sorry for derailing
Abscissa @ Jun 28th 2008 8:13PM
Super Princess Peach gets really good at about the halfway point. Before that it's incredibly easy. So if you're tempted to give up on it for being too easy early on - don't. It'll get better.
elfur @ Jun 27th 2008 3:16PM
That system was definetly ahead of its time but the concept is amazing, digital distribution ftw.
Touchscreen and some other functional capacitys too, also seemingly internet ready for easy use.
Like,a DS with R4 and bunch of apps.
NATO_Duke @ Jun 27th 2008 3:16PM
I still have to finish MGS4 and want to play some Burnout Paradise. Yet, I have family coming in for a wedding and doubt I will have enough time to relax and play.
whymog @ Jun 27th 2008 3:17PM
Hey Ludwig! If you're looking to do some co-op on N+, feel free to hit me up. It's rare to find anyone who likes the game; brings tears to my eyes.
:')
That emoticon represents tears of joy. I'm trying to make it a new thing.

I finally got Galactic Civ II, so I'm gonna be playing that. Maybe start another romp through Mass Effect and/or picking up where I left off in Uncharted.

Grabbed a DS Lite this week and have been playing through the games I missed out on this year (I gave my first DS to my younger brother last year before I went to college). Enjoying Space Invaders Extreme, Orcs and Elves (10$ at Gamestop!), and Picross (one of those games you can play while watching TV). Plan on picking up Prof. Layton and some more games with the Toys R Us B2G1F deal this week.
