First super details on Sony's DC Universe Online
Breaking a new title into the MMO market is difficult, as any game developer whose name isn't synonymous with an overabundance of frosty precipitation will attest -- especially when your title fits into a particular niche already explored by another developer. For instance, NCSoft's City of Heroes cornered the super hero MMO market when it debuted in 2004, creating an intimidating hurdle that other online vigilante simulators have yet to attempt to vault.
The latest issue of Edge magazine features an interview with Jim Lee, creative director for Sony's upcoming DC Universe Online, who reveals the steps Sony is taking to set their title apart from NCSoft's. With their inclusion of a number of recognizable faces from DC's voluminous roster, and their focus on making the title a "kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game", the apparent differences between the two games are clear. As long as there's a rich, intricate fish-controlling engine, we'll give it a shot.

huh is this battle of comics? im sure theres marvel online coming too?
Mr.ESC @ Jun 28th 2008 1:42PM
Marvel Universe Online for the xbox 360 project was scratched. Probably DC and Sony looked at that as a chance to shine.
This is going to fail hard.

Bad choice of comic book characters !
The DC universe consists almost entirly of lame , terribly designed characters with equally lame powers.
Does anybody read these comics anymore ?
Mr.ESC @ Jun 28th 2008 1:45PM
Batman comics are still good and at least DC doesn’t press the restart button as often as Marvel. Most of the stories that I have read about Marvel recently end in suckage.
One more day = Facepalm

DC comic characters aren't ALL bad. Beyond Batman, Superman, The Flash, and The Green Lantern though you are correct.

Excuse me?
nickels @ Jun 28th 2008 2:00PM
if marvel failed, this is defiantly going to fail
theturtle363 @ Jun 28th 2008 2:19PM
It's not like the Marvel one came out and totally sucked, it just had development problems, particularly that it barely got to start development
SonofaGunner @ Jun 29th 2008 7:30PM
That's some elementary school type of logic there Nickels.
theturtle363 @ Jun 28th 2008 2:16PM
It might end up just being exactly like City of Heroes or Champions Online, but at least we'll get to interact with the DC heroes
A person @ Jun 28th 2008 2:22PM
I prefer DC over Marvel anyway. I am guessing this won't do too hot, but if it does get released, I'll give it a try.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jun 28th 2008 5:05PM
I'll need more information and pics of this game before I get excited. Especially since Champions Online is also coming out and so far that looks pretty awesome.

Uh, doesn't Sony have an exclusive contract WITH NCSoft? I'd be surprised if they weren't helping SOE with some of the development since it's charted territory for them.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 29th 2008 12:46AM
that's the same thing i was thinking. Sony bought NC Soft to the best of my knowledge so i would assume they were possibly helping them out with it.
Amirisme @ Jun 28th 2008 10:00PM
Hey! Superman is standing on batman's foot. Hahahaha!
Eddy @ Jun 28th 2008 10:17PM

A FPS view seems a weird choice for a superhero MMO... surely you want to see your character? I'm guessing they just mean in terms of action.
They should base it in the Crisis on Infinite Earths setting.. that way they could include multiple versions of the heroes (oldstyle grey batman, new body-armor batman, etc..) and have a lot more freedom to experiement.
drew @ Jun 29th 2008 5:02PM
cant wait for this game, looks kinda cool
Dwag @ Jun 29th 2008 12:02AM
This is most likely getting canceled if M$' one didn't work then why would Sony's?
I think we'll hear of this being canceled by next Feburary.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 29th 2008 12:36AM
great logic there bud
Vellocet @ Jun 29th 2008 4:15AM
All I want to know is if I can make a Cosmic Treadmil in game. Not even for my own use. I'd just have one.
And, GLC anyone? NPC ran, user-joinable GLC. I can see it.
