Scared Stiff: Why should we care about Resident Evil 5?

That said, we nonetheless felt the game would make an appropriate end cap on our week long look at the genre Capcom helped not only create, but perfect, so we ended our week by speaking with producer Jun Takeuchi, and asked him why we should care about Resident Evil 5.

We'll be the first to admit that as much as we lift Resident Evil 4 up on a pedestal for reinventing the survival horror genre, the game did it at the expense of being scary. The game sacrificed thrills for action, anxiety for fun. This trend looks to continue with what we have seen so far of the series' next release, a move that immediately made sense after hearing Takeuchi-san's response when asked of his favorite survival horror game, at least in recent memory.
"we are creating a game that is going to change the way gamers think about and play survival horror games." |
This love of action looks to bleed over into the next Resident Evil title as well, as the producer told us that with Resident Evil 5, his team is "trying to create a game that keeps players constantly excited."

Takeuchi-san, whose credits include both Lost Planet and the third title in the Onimusha franchise, as well as the first two Resident Evil games for the original PlayStation, also admitted that the survival horror genre has become "incredibly popular." This, of course, forces his team to work even harder to make their game stand out.
"In order to differentiate ourselves from others in the market," he told us, "we are creating a game that is going to change the way gamers think about and play survival horror games."
"We're trying to create a game that keeps players constantly excited." |
As for what specifically the producer feels will make Resident Evil 5 stand out from other releases, Takeuchi-san was noticeably tight lipped. "I think our new enemies are incredible and cannot be easily described without seeing them." We can only imagine that he's referring to something -- or things -- that we haven't seen yet, as much of what has been shown so far echoes what we put down in the last game, admittedly with an extra shiny coat of next-gen polish.
Even so, Resident Evil 5 remains near the top of a short list of titles that we simply cannot wait to get into our hands, whenever it's released. As a franchise, Resident Evil has become practically an institution, and that alone is reason enough why we should care. To paraphrase our favorite traveling merchant, "We'll buy it at a high price!"

Hopefully we'll get a demo....some time in the future,(E3 maybe) I'm dying to see how it plays. With that said, I'm really excited about RE5, RE4 was my fav back them (got the SP ED for PS2 and Wii version).
bigsofty @ Jun 28th 2008 6:18PM
I hate positive discrimination as much as negative... EVERYONE should have the chance to play a baddie, no matter what the color... P.C. gone mad...
Lord Bowser @ Jun 28th 2008 8:49AM
Why shouldn't we care about Resident Evil 5?
1) the intolerance
2) the lack of sensitivity
3) the undercurrent of racism
And let me make my position clear: I am not being PC, not in the slightest. In fact, I believe, with teh death of Communism and Fascism, alongside Patriotism, or its mutated sibling Nationalism, our PC culture is the greatest threat to the Western World. It curbs original thought and reduces us all to minor men. It cannot be tolerated and we must fight it with all our might. But the imagery Capcom are utilising is plain wrong. You do not have to be a historian to see that fact. Here we have a company, a powerful multinational with branches all over the world, using racialist imagery to make a profit. They have absconded responsibility of proper free speech to make a game. Profit;game? What of us, where do we stand? Are we just empty consumers? Do we not care? Is this what we have become?
Is slavery a game? Is the current state of Africa (in parts, Zimbabwe, Congo, for example) a game? Is this mockery just a game?
Is this just a game, or something more? Do we want cultural value and worth? Then we should be open to critic. This entire situation is unsettling, and it just seems people want to whitewash this out of history.
Dale @ Jun 28th 2008 9:33AM
You mean we should be open to "critique".
I would really like to reserve judgement about the racist undertones until I have actually seen more than just a teaser video and a few screenshots.
Imagery without context really is not a solid basis for judgement.
Ryan @ Jun 28th 2008 9:38AM
@ Lord Bowser: FAIL.
FireStiq @ Jun 28th 2008 9:44AM
Looking for attention are we...hmm?
Phranctoast @ Jun 28th 2008 9:44AM
Your right Lord Bowser. Zombies have rights, and Capcom shouldn't exploit them for profit! Damn corporations..
*rolls eyes*
Jakka @ Jun 28th 2008 10:35AM
Bowser, shut up.
You wrote a bunch of words yet you failed to address ANY of the three statements. If you mind tell
us why Capcom lack sensivity or is intolerant then maybe we would be able to come up with decent arguments.
So far you managed to hit the Godwin's Law on the second comment.Well Done.
PS:To be honest PC and Anti-Racism are more racist than racism itself.I could write a very long comment about it, but the last time I did it(Uncharted racism) Joystiq auto-censor rejected my comment because I used the N-word.I'll probably bring up similar points if this discussion continues though.
Laggy @ Jun 28th 2008 11:21AM
Lord Bowser please leave, maybe just don't come back.
Mal F4cti0n @ Jun 28th 2008 1:23PM
And what, Lord Bowser, do you say to the obviously racist World War II games? How come we always have to be killing Germans? Don't you think that is a little extreme too? Why can't Capcom make the zombies in Africa native American Indians? I mean, black zombies in Africa is just such a ridiculous thought.
I mean, killing black zombies, while in Africa, just seems like such a stupid and historically inaccurate account of a game based on a semblance of reality. You see, Bowser, let me explain something to you. The thing that makes survival horror games scarier, is that they take an obviously extraordinary and fictional situation but put it in a situation that people can relate to, like a real world location, such as AFRICA!!!!
I want to kill Eskimos in Africa, New Zealander's in Spain and Moroccans in Los Angeles.
BTW, Bowser, your an idiot. I guess you think Castle Crashers is a completely racist game too, huh you moron.
carg0 @ Jun 28th 2008 9:47AM
do us a favor, Bowser, and take your Jack Thompson/Nancy Grace bullshit to the Fox Network and far away (very far) from here...
Lord Bowser @ Jun 28th 2008 9:54AM
I don't get understand your references. I don't have access to wikipedia on this computer. I'll take them for positives.
DiRT @ Jun 28th 2008 5:17PM
Umm... Nancy Grace isn't on the Fox Network, or even the Fox NEWS Network. Do you even know what you're talking about. I mean, Bowser was a FAIL, but you don't have to join him.
carg0 @ Jun 28th 2008 10:10PM
little ignorant boy, when did i explicitly say Thompson and Grace were already on either "Fox Network" or "Fox News Network" ??
only when you've learned to read and understand sentences properly should you begin to form and dictate your own. especially if you're going to try and talk down to someone. until then stay in school...
bdl0325 @ Jun 28th 2008 9:51AM
So...back on topic, this game is going to be great. Hopefully there will be a ton of OH SHIT moments, like when you saw the dogs in the fog in RE4.
MK @ Jun 28th 2008 9:57AM
That noise you can just about hear, right out on the periphery, is that of a nail being solidly hit on the head, and by Dale, no less.
kgaldies @ Jun 28th 2008 10:09AM
@ Lord Bowser : this is bullshit. Nobody complained about killing white zombies in the first game and 5 should be no different. I will definitly be buying this game.
Lord Bowser @ Jun 28th 2008 10:15AM
I didn't have the internet back in 1995.
t_m @ Jun 28th 2008 10:45AM
not that i particularly agree with Lord Bowser (ever), but the whole "no one ever complained about white zombies" argument is a total straw man. Its totally irrelevant to the discussion.
But hey, racial insensitivity from the japanese, surely not!?!?! ;)
lawrence @ Jun 28th 2008 10:37AM
it would be much better if capcom did a halloween release and just suprised everyone.
konajinx @ Jun 28th 2008 12:21PM
Just one question. WTF is a "calender?"
DesertPyrate @ Jun 28th 2008 2:32PM
Resident Evil is to survival horror what Madden is to football games, what WOW is to MMOs, RE4 reinvented how these types of games are played in made, hopefully Capcom has something big up their sleeve. As for people claiming racism, lol come on! As a black man writing this message, I've yet to be offended by anything I've seen from this game. People act like Chris Redfield has a Klan hood on and is calling people the N word. You have to have a new story last time it was latin folks in RE4 that time the story takes place in Africa, damn people look for something to bitch about!
The game looks awesome so far, I just hope the control mechanics are solid and the story doesnt get too cheesy. I wonder if Capcom will escape the same old formula of a Mansion and a Lab RE4 still had the lab lol. I think RE5 will be a winner, I've got a good feeling about this one.
Beatle_Meyer @ Jun 30th 2008 1:44AM
Finally!, the perspective of black person. Thanks for sharing how you feel about this issue. It seems to me that it's always white people getting up in arms about racism, as if we forget who the situation REALLY concerns.
White people deciding what offends black people is like men deciding if women can have abortions.
currentlyiphoneless:( @ Jun 28th 2008 4:04PM
I bet all of the new zombies are blood thirsty people who annoy you, n_ggers, thats right I said it but censored, I hate n_ggers and I bet so do people from capcom, so nobody should get offended but it sucks that zombies are naggers when it comes to bloodsucking and just throw themselves at you for your blood, get your own. sorry, I just had to say it and also I hope that like most other RE games this one will be very entertaining and worthwhile. thank you capcom, and I hate naggers as well.
Frojo @ Jun 28th 2008 4:00PM
Resident Evil 4 got me into the Survival Horror Genre. I just bought Alone In The Dark and am enjoying it thoroughly. I don't think i'll ever buy a game like condemned or the suffering, where the whole purpose is to freak you out and be disgusting. I like a game with a story that seems realistic enough that i could find myself in that situation. Resident Evil 4's beginning really drew me in, and the realism of Alone In The Dark's situations (exploding building that give you barely any chance of escape) draws me in even more. I can't wait to see what Resident Evil 5 does with it's new setting and tweaked gameplay and graphics.
Abscissa @ Jun 28th 2008 7:32PM
Resident Evil 4 is more of an action game then a survival horror, especially once you get past the early parts. Still a great game, though.
Frojo @ Jun 28th 2008 11:46PM
Yeah i suppose. There are still some survival horror elements but i enjoyed the beginning the most anyhow :P
And hi Abs, i think you're the one from Nsider.. I was Nessman.
J @ Jun 28th 2008 4:03PM
"Perfect"?
That's a laugh.
Hopefully Capcom will finally get their act together on #5.
RogueStorm @ Jun 28th 2008 4:34PM
Damn Lord Bowser, you're right! The only things missing from this game are the pimp zombies, drug dealing zombies, and gangsta rap zombies. Wait, Africans can't be zombies, only their related American stereotypes with dark skin can be.
eNrique @ Jun 28th 2008 7:02PM
i just see a lot of action here, but;
will it be as scary as re4??
haven't seen anything that defies nature, yet...
Abscissa @ Jun 28th 2008 7:32PM
"Why should we care about Resident Evil 5?"
Unless they port it to Wii, I'm not going to care.
Mr Khan @ Jun 28th 2008 8:51PM
There's my response, which i would chalk up to needless wishful thinking if this game wasn't running on an amped up version of the RE4 engine...
