Funny thing about huge updates: They come with lots of potential niggles and details that need to be clarified. Eric Lempel over at the PlayStation.Blog has done his best to address a number of the most frequently asked questions about firmware 2.40. In particular, there's clarification that the web browser will not work during gameplay. Nor will voice chat, changing display settings and the PlayStation Store.
The FAQ also reveals that Sony is working with publishers to "ensure that trophies are supported across the board in the future," which is a great sign. We have a feeling we're going to want to get our hands on as many trophies as we can once the update hits. Trophy stat info is held server-side, so you will be able to view the trophies of your friends even if they're offline (as Eric did in the second video). Sadly, unlocking a trophy does not "currently" make a noise (we're crossing our fingers for 2.41!) and Eric's favorite cheese is Mozzarella. An interesting choice.
Check out the post over at the PlayStation Blog for the full FAQ. We think that pretty much covers everything, unless you can think of something else that's still uncertain?

I was kind of disappointed too. No xmb during movie playback, no cross-game invites, no custom soundtracks unless included by developers in future games or patched retroactively rather than making it available across all games through the in-game xmb, no retroactive applying via save games of trophies :| which means you have to re-accomplish features or re-play through games you have already passed to get trophies, no voice-chat, no, no, no, not at this time, no no no.
Sigh, at least we got in-game xmb though. Its progress. Now I just hope for the rest in 2.50

They said they're looking into it.
Jesus. I don't understand why everyone thinks that this is the miracle update that'll fix every difference between XBL and PSN. Instead of complaining about it, realize that this update is simply a HUGE step in the right direction. There's still plenty of updates to go through in the future before it can be truly satisfactory.

Also on day one only SuperStardustHD will support trophies and actually not a single game ingame-music, because every single game has to be patched for it...
Infos according to official blog..
However, that's fine with me... Most probably only a matter of days, weeks, months - hopefully not so the last...

SS:HD already supports in game music. Why would they remove that away. Also doesn't High Velocity Bowling support in game music. I heard it does but I don't own it.

Yes both titles do, but in their own way. What i meant was the XMB-related-'layover' way of in-game-music, which won't affect custom-coded-solutions

“Will the patch automatically allocate unlocked trophies according to your saved files or would you have to do it again?
No, Trophies aren’t retroactive.”
1)Can a patch ever be capable of retroactivity? (Or is it truly out of the question?)
2)I own but I have yet to play MGS4, should I wait until a patch gets released to play MGS4? (Cuz really, what would be the point of starting it if I’m going to have tostart it all over again for trophies(in what could possibly be 1-11 months from now))
3)What if a game I currently own won’t ever support trophies? (Like in the scenario I just mentioned, What if MGS4 won’t ever support trophies?, I might as wellstart it now then)
4)How will we know when our games have become trophy ready? (Will we have to constantly pop in games to check or simply constantly check dev websites)
Please don’t get me wrong I’m truly grateful for the advancements the PS3 will make with 2.4, but having to start ALL my games over is angering and saddening. So once again I ask…

Yes because everyone would not go and download a save with all trophies unlocked. People on the net are honest boys and girls would never take advantage of a shortsighted implementation and leaving the whole trophies completely meaningless.

Although I am disappointed in the fact that private chat is not included, I am encouraged over the fact that Sony has acknowledged the fact that we want it.
With that said, I am very happy about the Trophy system, and will gladly REPLAY my games from the beginning to collect every Trophy.
It's one of the two things (other being private chat) I have missed since I got rid of my RODbox.

Knowing Sony I most likely believe that Chat and Invites won't be released until months later maybe even next year.
Right now I think Sony is focusing on patching those games for trophies and getting all around trophy support all Sony has to say is 'come on you give 360 achievements how hard is it to map those achievements to our system'. Sony has met us 2/3rds of the way so we should be happy and appreciate that they finally listened us. All Sony has to now start pushing the software by that I mean GOTY contender FFXIII and kinda God of War 3.
So what I'm saying is Cross game chat and invites in 2.41 no in 3.00 or even 2.70 most likely but I could be wrong they might surprise us.

Voice chat in game needs to be a priority. On the other hand I am glad Sony is releasing what they have and hopefully they will take the community more seriously and get this done quickly?

IMHO this update is lacking. This system has been out for almost two years. The 360 had a 1 year advantage and Sony is still struggling to implement features to match not even surpass the 360.
Sony's Eric Lempel has posted a somewhat exhaustive Q&A session on the PlayStation Blog, which details everything you may or may not have wanted to know about the console's major, upcoming firmware update. While I'm sure it was meant to be helpful, a read down his list of responses does little but drive home the point that, as neat the implementation of the trophy system is, the addition of the in-game XMB is nowhere near as useful as most of you thought/hoped it would be.
As an example: does the in-game XMB allow voice-chat? No. Can you browse the internet while playing a game? No. Can you access the in-game XMB while playing a PS2 game or watching a DVD/Blu-Ray? No. Can you change any visual settings while playing a game? No (sound settings, however, gets a "yes"). Can you access the PlayStation Store while playing a game? No. Does it let you invite a friend to a game who's playing another game? No. See where this is going?
If the in-game XMB forces you to quit the game to perform most of the functions you'd want to perform in it...then there's not much point having it available in-game, is it? Course, Sony probably knew this, which is why it's only been implemented now - after you all cried yourself hoarse over it - and not at launch.

So, while playing a game, where do you think you would get the processing power and memory from that the store or web-browser need?
The game has a dedicated amount of memory and processing power. It is one of the primary advantages of a console compared to a PC. They can not change that. It’s already a huge accomplishment that they got the XMB to work.

Wow...compare most of the crap you just spewed out to the 360 and you'll see you can't do them on it either.
In any case:
- 360 can't browse the net, period
- 360 can't change ANY settings while in-game
- 360 can't access the marketplace while in-game
- Who needs in-movie xmb? When i'm watching a movie i'd rather pay attention to it than being messaging people or whatever. In any case, pressing O pauses the movie and immediately sends you to xmb to do whatever you want and then resume the movie without missing anything.
Massive fail.
