First video of C.O.R.E. is a B.O.R.E.
Having nothing to do with the sci-fi disaster flick The Core or Sony's digital magazine Qore – or even Tomb Raider developer CORE – this FPS from developer No Way (yes way!) manages to take us back to 1993 with its straight-outta-DOOM shotgun sound effect and 1977 with its "hey, that's from Star Wars!" blaster sound effect.
We eagerly await a metareview on this one. Can it even ... touch Touch the Dead?

It's like...looking at a Wii game. J/K.
The DS has come quite a bit in graphics after 4 years. The N64 after 4 years hit this level, but fit low frame rate and expansion pack requirements. But yeah, what's with the sound effects?
I think it'll end up being a run of the mill average shooter, even on DS.
Marshmallow713 @ Jun 30th 2008 11:11PM
It reminds me of Dark Forces. It actually might be fun for nostalgia's sake. :D
Nick Dunn @ Jul 1st 2008 11:32AM
I was just going to say, I would love to see a Dark Forces remake for the DS. I tried playing recently but the low resolution on a big monitor hurt my eyes too much to continue.
TomCo @ Jun 30th 2008 11:13PM
It looks great tbh
Mr.ESC @ Jun 30th 2008 11:14PM
Well it doesn't looks that bad to me :/
Blue_Falcon @ Jun 30th 2008 11:14PM
This doesn't even look impressive for even a DS FPS.
Hell, I think I recall Rogue Agent looking better than this did.
Lijik @ Jun 30th 2008 11:15PM
At first I thought you guys were exaggerating things, and then I watched the video. Yeesh.
At least the scenery is inspired. Sometimes. About twice. I'm actually interested as to why some of the footage has a grainy filter on for seemingly no reason, so I may pick this up when it hits the bargain bin just to satiate my curiosity.
Fernando Rocker @ Jun 30th 2008 11:22PM
mmm... well. I like old FPS, like Doom, Quake or Duke Nukem... and just by watching the video, the game has that feeling.
I like the style... and the controls for FPS in the DS works great... stylus acting as a mouse and d-pad acting like the AWSD keys and trigger to shoot. And touch screen icons to change weapons. I love that setup.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 1st 2008 1:38AM
If this had anything to do with a Sony product you would be calling this "generic".
JCD @ Jul 1st 2008 8:43PM
I can't even begin to believe you find using stylus + dpad an adequate FPS setup. You must have just done some 1 up shrooms or something . . .
Neon Jebus @ Jun 30th 2008 11:25PM
Does anyone recall those commercials for one of the video game schools that advertises on G4? The two d-bags seated in geeky gamer chairs talking about making their own game? The one where they use that 'really cool' sound effect.
Well...glad to finally see the fruits of their labor.
Lijik @ Jun 30th 2008 11:31PM
Oh man, I hope they reuse that monster they placed in level 2!
Neon Jebus @ Jun 30th 2008 11:33PM
Well they did reuse that bosses sound effect on those little spider like creatures! Awesome!
Sam @ Jun 30th 2008 11:43PM
the beginning looked ok. but I don't like that the hero does kind of an erotic "uugh" EVERY TIME he gets shot. the screen is already tu , we don't need the guy on the plane next to us to move their kids a few seats away because of the sounds. and one of the bullet animations is an odd slow moving orange ball with a red fire like animation around it, I don't really get that. also, just say its the year 2020. not the "20th of the XXI century" that doesn't even sound right. Otherwise it has potential to be an average shooter. yay.
Sam @ Jun 30th 2008 11:45PM
oops this sentance was supposed to say
"But I don't like that the hero does kind of an erotic "uugh" EVERY TIME he gets shot. the screen is already turning red,"
is there anyway to edit that?
Kevlar @ Jun 30th 2008 11:51PM
Those graphics look good enough to be Quake 2!
The game itself looks bleh, but I'd like to see a Half-Life, Quake 2, or Unreal remake with that engine!
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 1st 2008 1:39AM
I hope that's sarcasm.
Kevlar @ Jul 1st 2008 4:55AM
Ding ding! We have a winner here!
With the possible exception of the remake of Half-Life on the DS, yes, that was complete sarcasm.
(You know Half-Life ain't gonna happen, either, anyways.)
DBuck_Eye @ Jul 1st 2008 12:00AM
You guys seem to be a little rough on the poor little title. I mean, sheesh, give it a break. Have you all looked at Moon this way as well?
eldee @ Jul 1st 2008 1:53AM
Seriously.. it's a DS game ffs. If you want to slam on a DS fps, take a look at COD4, it's fucking terrible.
theturtle363 @ Jul 1st 2008 12:03AM
This name reminds me of something, can anyone think of the name of that game about soldiers that wear special combat suits to allow them to orbitally drop into combat?
sgt pepper @ Jul 1st 2008 8:22AM
Ever read Starship Troopers by Heinlein or Armour by Steakley?
theturtle363 @ Jul 1st 2008 2:16PM
I found it, it was called Section 8
mirilene @ Jul 1st 2008 12:08AM
Star Wars was 77
J.Goodwin @ Jul 1st 2008 12:20AM
You sure the Blaster Sound effect isn't from Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold?
Maybe I'm the only one who played it.
Play Catacomb 3D Dammit! I know it's just 16 colors, but it's a fucking awesome 3d shooter!
Jack K @ Jul 1st 2008 1:07AM
..... It scared me
Jhongerkong @ Jul 1st 2008 12:31AM
Btw, anyone here have Mario Hoops 3-on-3? Literally the best graphics you will ever see on the DS (and at 60fps too).
geishroy @ Jul 1st 2008 12:39AM
i hope that music loops the entire time you play.
Levi @ Jul 1st 2008 12:41AM
Why does the grunting sound like it was lifted from a gay porno? Not that I'd know what grunting from a gay porno sounds like.
ianp711 @ Jul 1st 2008 1:10AM
I thought the level design and 3D architecture wasn't bad for a DS, which is known for not being a 3D powerhouse. Comparing it to Call of Duty on the DS, it's seems on par or even better since it had some background animation.
On the other hand, the creature design seems like crap, they were not well animated and seem to move ploddingly slow.
----
On another note, I was seriously disappointed that Call of Duty on the DS didn't support online multiplayer. I would have picked the game up if it did. Nice framerate though...
barc0de @ Jul 1st 2008 1:30AM
They should have spent their time finishing the port of Half-Life over to the DS. That would have been epicness on a whole different level.
Thanatos @ Jul 1st 2008 2:01PM
How did i not hear about this? That is EPIC!
zakhan @ Jul 1st 2008 2:25AM
Not that I necessarily disagree but reports which get opinionated in this manner frankly suck.
*removes joystiq from bookmarks*
sinai @ Jul 1st 2008 3:16AM
didnt someone already port quake to the ds?
Kevlar @ Jul 1st 2008 5:00AM
Yes, and I tried playing it.
It's very well done, and technically impressive... they just need to fix the control configuration, and tailor the game to the DS a bit more.
I could not find (or make) a single control scheme I could play with. Stylus for mouse, + for wsad, l-trigger for shoot, but there is no way to assign any usable button, or button combo for jumping, changing weapons, or 'action'. It's possible I missed something with that regard, but I really did mess with it for the better part of an day trying to get it to work.
Deprincer @ Jul 1st 2008 3:40AM
aw man, that was such a treat... i loved it! those moaning male sound effects are hilarious, along with the sound of the machine guns, sounds like a pulsating water gun! and that music is just riveting! rofl thanks joystiq.
Ghen @ Jul 1st 2008 7:35AM
Bullets, laser beams, and spider spit all move at the same speed. Classic.
AJ @ Jul 1st 2008 8:03AM
Snarky is great. It's a joystiq tradition. But can we please TRY to pretend to be even handed with a game we have not played yet?
t_m @ Jul 1st 2008 11:17AM
Looks good to me.
Very generic its true (its amazing how many bases have lost communication!) but if you think this looks like doom then you need to go back and play doom. Its at least on a quake level.
I think its a good idea for devs to stop trying to make PS2 level graphics on the DS, and concentrate on making games that play well. Having high poly characters and weapons is all good on more powerful systems, but the DS is on a par with an N64.
Quake was almost the same time as goldeneye, so it makes sense to concentrate on bigger environments, faster gameplay and more numerous enemies, like games back then did. (plus, they look much better on the small DS screen)
ANyway, the DS needs more FPS games! (goldeneye, turok2, dark forces and jedi knight would be good starts... but i'd certainly buy Doom (2) for the DS)
J @ Jul 1st 2008 11:28AM
maybe i'm boring, but i kinda like it.
343 Guilty Fart @ Jul 1st 2008 12:37PM
In 2101 war was beginning...
Seriously, what's up with "On the 20th of the 21st century"?? The 20th of what??
Thanatos @ Jul 1st 2008 1:56PM
its got some walking sounds from Half-Life as well. Looked alright to me only if the wouldve tried a little harder on the weapons and sounds.
Wubbytoes @ Jul 1st 2008 7:44PM
That cheesy metal playing in the trailer was hilarious. This game looks terrible, which means it might be good for a laugh if it's budget priced.
