It really doesn't matter to me. I would never pay for Xbox Live anyway, which is the main reason I don't own a 360. It's not worth extra fees on top of fees on top of fees for some sort of expanded online play. The current Sony set-up is fine with me and it's free.

ok so I commend Sony for listening to the mass populace and getting on the ball, but they still fell kinda short. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like everybody (ps3 and 360 users) want everything that makes the dashboard so great on the XMB. So why is it that sony isn't doing some major things like chat across two different games and the ability to send invites. Its almost like they should have just swallowed their pride, bought a 360, compare, find what they were missing and get it all taken care of. Sure it would have been a complete copy and paste but it's the foundation everybody wants and is completely used to.

In-game invites are also programed by developers for the Xbox Dashboard, just like the XMB invites.

There is no way the Live dashboard knows how to initiate a multiplayer game without the game being programed to do so.

I'm happy with the in-game XMB being able to do invites, since its technicaly impossible for any program to just know where the EXE files for launching a multiplayer game are within each individual game's programing. Responsible developers will patch their older multiplayer games.

Riddle me this 360 owners: if you have the ability to voice chat with someone else playing another game what happens if you're playing a multiplayer game where you're talking to your teammates, warning them about potential threats and snipers, when suddenly you're gone because you're "on the other line"? Does the 360 have a call waiting feature where you can switch between conversations?

"Hold on Joe, one my squad mates in Halo is asking me where a good sniper post would be."
KA-CLICK
"Yeah dude, you go to the far left of the tower and set up shop there and... no, no the left so... yeah okay, later"
KA-CLICK
"Sorry dude I had to... ahh man, hold on again"
KA-CLICK
"The friggin' LEFT man!!!!" Jeez!!! Alright, LATER!!"
KA-CLICK
"So I was saying... LEFT YOU MORON!!!! No man not you... look just... I'll call you back dude."

While this feature would be nice I can't see it working in all situations.

As for the pause menu thing, get over it. Like someone else said it's possible that the Start button is used for something else depending the game. One more button press isn't going to give me carpal tunnel and if there's a video playing in the back at least I can do other stuff while unskippable cutscenes are playing the background.

On the Xbox 360, you can switch between the game channel and 4 or 5 other chat channels.... during EVERY game.

I know that these features will be in MGS4 I can not doubt that. But this all around great. It is about time I can play Music in the Background.

Yes, you can switch between FOUR (5?) independent chat (channels) AND the game itself with the 360.

This goes to show just how amazing the LIVE system is. 360 had all these features years ago and they did it better.

Joystiq, you nailed it with the title. There is some good like in-game messaging, and there is some bad like lack of voice chat, but 2.4 is incredibly late to the party plus it forgot to bring the drinks (in-game invites).

Yeah, a lot of the complaints here (aside from the private voice chat) have to do with Sony's philosophy when working with developers. From what I've seen Microsoft is more about "standards". You need this list of 30 things before you can release a game on our system. That's part of the reason there's a general lack of originality on XBLA.

Sony seems to have a bit more of an open platform for the system, without the arbitrary size limits on PSN or the 1 game a week limit, all that. So it makes sense that they would make more of these features (invites, pausing etc) up to the developer. Downside is that it's uniform for us as gamers, but it also leaves it up to the developer to determine what's best for their game.

At first, after reading the article and many of the comments, I felt Sony was falling behind in comparison to XBLA...Then I remembered just how many games/systems I have used that promised me something and then pushed back the release on it 4 or 5 times before FINALLY giving (mostly) what they promised. Has anyone stopped to think that Sony is at least giving us some of what we want, with plenty of room in the future to give us the rest? MS has had more time to polish their stuff compared to Sony, and I for one am grateful they got the trophies out and look forward to another release allowing my voicechats :) I'd rather have one piece of candy now and another piece in a few months than wait several more months for two pieces!

I was hoping that pausing games when one brings up the XMB would be mandatory, but that's my only gripe when it comes to the new features. What I'm really wondering is if this upcoming patch will fix some of the Emotion Engine emulation problems that still exist with the 80GB PS3; I bought one two weeks ago (one of two Motorstorm bundles which, after about a cumulative 20 hour search, happened to be the only unsold 80 GB PS3's in the entire city of Ottawa) and the older Ratchet & Clank games are nigh unplayable on it, as is Jak & Daxter. It's a slight pain in the ass, since I bought my wife those games to play. Or, does Sony not update EE emulation anymore?

Cross game voice chat just isn't important to the majority of gamers out there. It is more of a hardcore feature.

It seems like this is the major gripe. So Live alows you to have 5 chat channels you can switch to. You can chat with friends while playing different games, nice if you use it but not really worth much if you do not care about chatting.

With the 2.4 update you can send text messages and recieve them while you are in a game. Pretty much all that is really needed. I'd rather do that since I barely even use my headset, too much of a pain. Besides I usually end up muting voice whenever I play online because of all the garbage chatter.

While playing your own music is cool for sports games and online shooters, it just isn't appropriate in every game. A good single player game should have its own music to set the tone and help tell the story.

In the end the XBOX 360 is a multiplayer focused console. It has also helped lead to the state of lesser quality single player games we are in. Because a developer must implement the features in all games, they waste time they could spend on adding more content. Also due to developer knowledge that the majoroty of XBOX owners look to multiplyer over single player as the primary reason for purchasing a game, they know they can skimp on the single player game and still sell a ton of copies.

Sony is focused more on the single player gamer who may play online once and a while. The fact is that there are more of them than hardcore online gamers.

Sounds like the editor of this article, simply does not get it, and wants it to work like the 360.

Interesting he does not mention of the instant access to the XMB, rather than the VCEEERRRYYY SLOWWWW 360...

The fact everything is show on XMB is a feature, you select the movie you want to watch (for example), it tells you the game will quit if you carry on. It's a quick way to jump from one thing to another, no need to seperately exit and select the next thing.

You can even jump from game to game using this method...

Being able to chat across games is not a hardcore feature, its something that once you do it becomes natural and really adds to the experience of XBL. I do not know how many times one of my friends got online or even I and we opened up a quick chat. The fact that I can continue to play my game and still chat with my friends is a huge plus and for the people that say this is not important are the ones who have never experienced it.

When you look deeper into the 2.40 update it appears that Sony didn’t find a solution to the memory issue but instead push that issue to the developers, the fact that that a lot of features are developer dependant is probably more to do with memory then Sony not wanting to standardize their interface. Each feature takes memory away from the developer and thus the developer will have to decide if the feature is worth adding.

I see a lot of people praising Sony for giving the developers the option to add features but to be honest this is actually a big problem and weakest link to the whole update. The reason I say this is that you will get inconsistent features from game to game. You can never expect to have any one feature within a game you play and thus it will get frustrating when those features are not present. Making everything standard means that the consumer can always expect the features they like to ALWAYS be there from game to game.

Personally I see a lot of games only including a few features. This will make using the XMB within the game always a crap shoot because you will expect one thing and it will not be there.

We can't blame SONY for not being able to copy MS entirely. They at least tried and I'm happy for PS3 users. Welcome to true generation console gaming my friends :). Enjoy achievements, sorry... trophies and in game XMB. More features will be added/copied soon.

btw hats off to MS for thinking in game xbox guide access through.

I think its stupid that people are moaning about this auto-pause thing- I mean if the ps button did mean it auto paused whenever you needed to go get a drink or something, what would be the point of pausing?

What I think is worth moaning about is the no private chat option. That sucks- it would be so much easier to play games with friends if they included this.
I reckon at some point in the future they should add like a live stream of the player's webcam above their online character.
Aim high.
