Rumor: PS2 game downloads coming to PS Store
Looks like Sony's planning to hog even more of your sweet, sweet download bandwidth via the PlayStation Store, if a rumor posted on the N4G forums is to be believed. According to the post, downloadable PS2 games will be announced at E3 next month and will appear on the store this summer.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is prominently featured in the "leaked" image; the other games we can make out are Fantavision, Red Faction, Ridge Racer V, Smuggler's Run, SSX, and ...well, we're not quite sure what that last one is. Keen-eyed readers to the comments page! the last one is The Bouncer. Thanks, readers!
The info supposedly originates from a Sony Europe insider, who informed the poster that the roll-out will actually occur in Europe before the rest of the world. (Which is contrary to Sony's usual M.O.) This rumor comes on the heels of an actual official announcement by Sony that it will finally introduce a movie / video download service for PS3 this summer. It seems like this summer will see the PS3 experience evolving quite a bit, especially if this rumor pans out.

Public Service Announcement to go with it:
Get your hard drives upgraded now.
:)
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jun 30th 2008 3:46PM
At least you don't have to pay a bajillion dollars for a 120GB HDD like on the 360.
Thank you non-proprietary accessories!
Marty @ Jun 30th 2008 6:25PM
That's why the PS3 costs so much more, right?
Extinction @ Jun 30th 2008 9:09PM
You get what you pay for
Marty @ Jul 1st 2008 11:03AM
3 years into the life of e the 360 and the PS3 is just now getting around to adding features, via software update, that bring it closer to being on par. Sounds like a losing deal to me.
artemisgone @ Jun 30th 2008 3:03PM
The last game on there is Bouncer.

I seriously want them to work on BC...Not a dipshit like selling them on PSN
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jun 30th 2008 3:24PM
For this to work, the software has to be in place. This rumor, in essence, brings more credibility to Sony rolling out software emu.
CGamble20 @ Jun 30th 2008 8:10PM
Wow his comments is so faded...IT BURNS TO READ!

So..are these actually playable on any PS3? Not just the old ones?
Boy With Balls on Chin @ Jun 30th 2008 3:07PM
Thats a good point. If theyre going to play them on the new ones too, does that mean BC is coming from an update.
NATO_Duke @ Jun 30th 2008 3:08PM
That would be the idea. Instead of giving full BC to the titles, they will allow them to be downloaded and played. Yup, Sony is out to make money too.
Zoesch @ Jun 30th 2008 3:11PM
Most likely it'll be rolled as part of a system update (BC on the 40GB) and then every title might get to patch the compatibility layer?
Nah, that's too clever.
Nick Ritch @ Jun 30th 2008 3:23PM
Smart move sony!! You won't let people play ps2 discs on their 40gb systems but if they pay to play the same game as a download it works!?!?!?!? What Crock of Shit!!!
I dont understand why the 80gb ps3 can do sofware BC but the 40gb can't. Same hardware different harddrive.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jun 30th 2008 3:28PM
Nick Ritch, deep breaths, dumbass.
In case you weren't paying attention as PSX compatibility got added to the PSP, the software emulation was put in place before the actual games came along.
In other words, how do you expect these to work without software emu? More than likely, the software emulation will work in compat with a percentage of titles, which will determine which games get dropped. So the system will work with all those games on sale in the store.
creid @ Jun 30th 2008 3:50PM
@Nick Ritch: It isn't the same hardware. 80GB has some PS2 hardware, 40GB has none.
DaMan09 @ Jun 30th 2008 4:39PM
You also have to remember that this is just a rumor.
AdolescentDon @ Jun 30th 2008 3:09PM
This is rubbish, why can't they just give us a working BC? I have all those games..
Matt @ Jun 30th 2008 11:50PM
The last one is "the bouncer" GREAT GAME!
ill trooper @ Jun 30th 2008 4:36PM
Agreed - this is not a good substitute for backward-compatibility.
"Sony, tell me how my ass tastes"
Vidikron (FU) @ Jun 30th 2008 3:32PM
1) There were several models with working BC. You could have acquired on them. Still can.
2) I fail to see how this is any different than selling PS1 games. Not all of have these games.
3) If true this could be very good news. It may mean that a working software emulator is not too far away.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jun 30th 2008 3:34PM
*one of them
Jakka @ Jun 30th 2008 3:41PM
Yeah...as my slightly retarded friend with fanboyish tendencies once mentioned when I confronted him about the lack of BC:
"Who cares about BC? Just play it on your PS2...duh."
It's probably retards like him that got BC axed.
AdolescentDon @ Jun 30th 2008 4:03PM
Oh and yeah, Good luck finding a PS3 that does PS2 BC in the UK.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jun 30th 2008 4:36PM
OK, good point about the UK, but this is a US site. Either way, this is still potentially very good news as it could mean Sony is close to having decent PS2 software emulator ready.
PojoMofo @ Jun 30th 2008 9:28PM
agree with Vid, just like the cheapest 360 doesnt have BC, neither does the cheapest PS3.
Rowdehaj @ Jul 1st 2008 3:31AM
Pojomofo, you can add the harddrive to the Xbox 360 Arcade though, enabling Xbox BC. I want PS2 BC, damnit.
Classic_Gs @ Jun 30th 2008 3:46PM
Oh, now thats hawt!
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 30th 2008 3:16PM
Cool, never got around to picking up God of War II. I was already deep in the 360 love :P Assuming they add GoWII to the list eventually.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 30th 2008 3:18PM
This would be great if true except for one teeny little problem
YOU CAN'T EVEN PUT PS1 GAMES OUT AT A RESPECTABLE RATE SONY
Seriously start chugging them out at a good rate, like 1 or 2 a week, before you start adding more stuff to the list of things you rarely release.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jun 30th 2008 3:33PM
Oh, they put them out quite fast... just not in our store :(
tifosiotaku @ Jun 30th 2008 3:20PM
Shouldn't Sony put more PSOne games up for download first?
kingalekz @ Jun 30th 2008 3:23PM
Hope this is true. And I hope it's MGS2 Substance, don't have it.
Sam Earl @ Jun 30th 2008 3:24PM
And this is the reason that they removed Backwards Compatibility from the new PS3 models. Great...
CGamble20 @ Jun 30th 2008 8:08PM
Yeah and the same with the PSone store, they cut BC for those titles just so we would pay for the....wait...
Nugent @ Jun 30th 2008 3:25PM
If this is true, I think the most likely scenario would be that it checks if you have a 60/80 Gb PS3 and tells you that you can't play it if you have a 40 Gb model. I'd be surprised if they cracked BC for the 40 Gb model.
Erwos @ Jun 30th 2008 4:06PM
Totally agree. This is going to be a way for Sony to further differentiate the 40gb and 80gb models.
NATO_Duke @ Jun 30th 2008 5:08PM
I doubt that would be the case. Like with the XBox, they would make the game usable on any PS3 in its dl form. I can't imagine why they couldn't do that if the 360 could.
Courtney @ Jul 1st 2008 12:46AM
I agree that that's a doubtful situation. Sony's argument for axing BC was cost, that including the hardware or developing a purely software based BC solution cost too much. And, when you figure there are so many used PS2 games floating around, Sony isn't going to make any money by including BC. But, if they release PS2 games for download, they now have a financial incentive to develop a purely software based emulation.
I don't agree with it, but it makes sense from a corporate standpoint. Glad I got a 60 before they disappeared.
sinai @ Jun 30th 2008 3:30PM
that 80GB seems to get smaller and smaller.
Mr Khan @ Jun 30th 2008 3:32PM
"Hey, some people are pretty mad about us jacking backwards compatibility"
"So let's give them their games back, but have them take up harddrive space, and charge them for it!"
"Brilliant."
But, in all actuality, it could work more as a VC-style service, not to sell back to you what you already have, but to allow you to easily obtain which you never could in the past. Though some of those PS2 titles would probably be dirt cheap in real life
3cubed (4squared plus 2squared) @ Jun 30th 2008 3:45PM
So are any future iterations of the PS3 going to have BC? I am wanting to get a PS3 by Christmas and BC is a big deal since There are only like five games I want on the PS3 but I have a back log of PS2 games.
