We're very relieved to know that the 20GB Xbox 360 model isn't advanced enough to experience the equivalent of a mid-life crisis. Not only are a string of alleged retailer ads knocking its asking price down to $299 in July, but an Opposable Thumbs source is suggesting that the model will soon be discontinued and replaced by younger, better model packing 60 gigglebytes.
Still, it's a rumor we've heard before (remember this?), one the "usually trustworthy source" indicates will become reality during E3. Fluctuating hard drive capacities, multiple SKUs and retired models: Welcome to the current generation!

Does that mean I can sell my 20GB 360 and get $600 just like with 60GB PS3?

Oh right because a portable music player is totally comparable with a home console entertainment system.

OMG I HATE THIS GENERATION!!!!!!!! The fucking SKU's make early adopters fucked. If the third party 360's are true then this is shit what happened to different colors instead of different parts.

Remember when transparent plastic was cool and Nintendo released several transparent N64 in different colors.
Then we all get to the conclusion transparent plastic was fugly.

I don't care how many colors you make a console, that's fine with me even if some of them are ugly. I'll just pick the color that I like the most.
But I agree with the parent. Too many choices in functional hardware differences for a console is both confusing and annoying. If I want to go out and buy a wii or a psp I can just go buy one. I don't need to do graduate level research to figure out what all my options are, besides the colors silver, black or red.

Man, I can't remember a time when the early adapter wasn't fucked. With anything. Seriously.

Come on people. Get a grip. We're only talking about selling identical consoles with a few more gigs on the hard drive. How is that going to screw early adopters, or render games incompatible? There's nothing wrong with the original models (other than all the wrong things we already know about, or course, that will presumably still be there in the 60 gig system).

Yeah, I don't get it... what's the harm in having a few different HDD size options? I'm not too familiar with the 360, but they're probably all essentially the same thing, right?
I would have been happy to buy a 20GB PS3 and save some cash (were it not discontinued when I bought my PS3) since I planned to swap in a big drive anyways. I just wish they used a 3.25" SATA drive instead of the 2.5" they've got in there... Even cheaper and bigger capacity on the 3.25" Oh well, 320GB for $120 isn't too terrible.

Good for new consumers, both the bigger HDD and the lower, but what I really want is free Live.
With all the announcements made by Sony about the 2.40 update, PS3 is almost on par with the Live and in game Dashboard options.
Sure, the 360 still has some advantages, but not worth $50 dlls. anymore.

You really think Sony is going to keep its onlive service free for ever?
Think about it. All these upgrades cost money. Once its own live service gets popular, they sure as hell are going to charge gamers for premium access.
As far as i know, Sony's Online service doesnt even have a decent movie catalog yet. And Home isnt released yet.
$50 for 13 months is pocket change. If you could afford buying a 399$ gaming console, i am sure you can afford another $50 for 13 months of online play.

I disagree. $50 a year is not that big a deal and I am more than happy to pay that to get the service I have on Live.

Lol, this is one of the arguments that is reasonable, LIVE is like pocket change and I have several games that came with 2 months free even.

Hmm, I am pleasantly amused by this rumor...
It's like the Sony "Price Drop" last year, but instead of cutting features on the new SKUs and screwing future adopters they are adding features to keep the price point screwing the early adopters... Which one burns you more?
Hilarious!

Same SKU, that's ridiculous.
How would you know when to restock the 360s if the PS3s were mixed in with them on the perpetual?

How about dropping the 120GB HDD to $100 and a 60GB drive for $50 and the 20GB drive for $19.99?
Better yet, make the 20GB HDD free to Core and Arcade owners. What's it cost MS to make the 20GB HDD? 15 cents? This would solve the non-HDD problem.
