Rumorang: 60GB Xbox 360 model is in, 20GB is out
We're very relieved to know that the 20GB Xbox 360 model isn't advanced enough to experience the equivalent of a mid-life crisis. Not only are a string of alleged retailer ads knocking its asking price down to $299 in July, but an Opposable Thumbs source is suggesting that the model will soon be discontinued and replaced by younger, better model packing 60 gigglebytes.
Still, it's a rumor we've heard before (remember this?), one the "usually trustworthy source" indicates will become reality during E3. Fluctuating hard drive capacities, multiple SKUs and retired models: Welcome to the current generation!

Wait, does this mean they're only knocking the 20GB units down to clear out stock, then? The 60GBs are going to be full price?
Mr.ESC @ Jun 30th 2008 4:37PM
YES.
MAYBE.
NO.
Try Again.
Ask your parents.
DonWii @ Jun 30th 2008 4:43PM
Yup. Just like Sony's Clearance last year.
Jakka @ Jun 30th 2008 5:27PM
Does that mean I can sell my 20GB 360 and get $600 just like with 60GB PS3?
Co @ Jun 30th 2008 7:44PM
"Fluctuating hard drive capacities, multiple SKUs and retired models: Welcome to the current generation!"
Riiiiight... if that's what it takes to be NOT #1.
Lars @ Jun 30th 2008 8:52PM
@Co:
Still better than the Wii's pitifully small storage capacity. I bought 5 VC games and my Wii is out of space.
ballistic3188 @ Jun 30th 2008 4:34PM
my god can sony and microsoft just stick with the same SKU.
NATO_Duke @ Jun 30th 2008 4:42PM
Two companies with the same sku? Thats silly!
Draco Basileus @ Jun 30th 2008 4:45PM
Apple's iPod (Shuffle, Nano, Phone, Touch) says "Hello"
Jakka @ Jun 30th 2008 5:28PM
Mind the three completely different versions of Ipod Nano.
Co @ Jun 30th 2008 7:46PM
"Apple's iPod (Shuffle, Nano, Phone, Touch) says "Hello"
Oh right because a portable music player is totally comparable with a home console entertainment system.
RESISTANCE @ Jun 30th 2008 4:35PM
OMG I HATE THIS GENERATION!!!!!!!! The fucking SKU's make early adopters fucked. If the third party 360's are true then this is shit what happened to different colors instead of different parts.
Mr.ESC @ Jun 30th 2008 4:41PM
Remember when transparent plastic was cool and Nintendo released several transparent N64 in different colors.
Then we all get to the conclusion transparent plastic was fugly.
Safiel @ Jun 30th 2008 5:03PM
I don't care how many colors you make a console, that's fine with me even if some of them are ugly. I'll just pick the color that I like the most.
But I agree with the parent. Too many choices in functional hardware differences for a console is both confusing and annoying. If I want to go out and buy a wii or a psp I can just go buy one. I don't need to do graduate level research to figure out what all my options are, besides the colors silver, black or red.
Farseer (GDI) @ Jun 30th 2008 5:14PM
Man, I can't remember a time when the early adapter wasn't fucked. With anything. Seriously.
jayeffaar @ Jun 30th 2008 5:30PM
Come on people. Get a grip. We're only talking about selling identical consoles with a few more gigs on the hard drive. How is that going to screw early adopters, or render games incompatible? There's nothing wrong with the original models (other than all the wrong things we already know about, or course, that will presumably still be there in the 60 gig system).
Lars @ Jun 30th 2008 9:02PM
Yeah, I don't get it... what's the harm in having a few different HDD size options? I'm not too familiar with the 360, but they're probably all essentially the same thing, right?
I would have been happy to buy a 20GB PS3 and save some cash (were it not discontinued when I bought my PS3) since I planned to swap in a big drive anyways. I just wish they used a 3.25" SATA drive instead of the 2.5" they've got in there... Even cheaper and bigger capacity on the 3.25" Oh well, 320GB for $120 isn't too terrible.
Fernando Rocker @ Jun 30th 2008 4:37PM
Good for new consumers, both the bigger HDD and the lower, but what I really want is free Live.
With all the announcements made by Sony about the 2.40 update, PS3 is almost on par with the Live and in game Dashboard options.
Sure, the 360 still has some advantages, but not worth $50 dlls. anymore.
shiv @ Jun 30th 2008 5:07PM
You really think Sony is going to keep its onlive service free for ever?
Think about it. All these upgrades cost money. Once its own live service gets popular, they sure as hell are going to charge gamers for premium access.
As far as i know, Sony's Online service doesnt even have a decent movie catalog yet. And Home isnt released yet.
$50 for 13 months is pocket change. If you could afford buying a 399$ gaming console, i am sure you can afford another $50 for 13 months of online play.
Haggard @ Jun 30th 2008 4:56PM
You've changed!
Abandon your newfound sense of rationality and balanced opinion for the old Fernando we loved :(
Matt @ Jun 30th 2008 5:11PM
I disagree. $50 a year is not that big a deal and I am more than happy to pay that to get the service I have on Live.
Hyams @ Jun 30th 2008 5:12PM
Fernando are you ... are you feeling okay, buddy?
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 30th 2008 5:17PM
I'm scared.
Noshino @ Jun 30th 2008 5:23PM
THROW HIM A MUSHROOM!
cc123 @ Jun 30th 2008 5:25PM
@_@
samfish @ Jun 30th 2008 5:29PM
You don't want to know what I caught him doing last night with an Eye Toy cam...
Night Elve @ Jun 30th 2008 6:43PM
I'm pretty sure is starting to rain here!
Mr.ESC @ Jun 30th 2008 6:52PM
Oh, oh let me guess Samfish you caught him watching porn or, or masturbating.
Am I rite? What did I win?
I manage to type all that without picturing any of that in my mind and as long as I keep on typing I won't have to think about it. I'll keep making this post as long as possible because believe me I don't want those images in my head.
Oh boy oh boy I think I'm losing control. The images.. The evil...teh ghey are so much stronger than me man, I must keep on fighting....must...keep…fighting.
Damn you Samfish, why I had to reply, why, WHY?
Oh sorry if anyone else pictured in their mind the same due my post, oh I'm so sorry f*ck I'm losing control.
Oh Sorry to everyone ohhhh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
*MINDFUCK.
You died.
CONTINUE?
*Yes

Game Over.
You just lost the game.
Ordeith @ Jun 30th 2008 7:33PM
Good thing it only costs $40, then.
Superstar90 @ Jun 30th 2008 7:34PM
Lol, this is one of the arguments that is reasonable, LIVE is like pocket change and I have several games that came with 2 months free even.
Have you been eating the purple mushrooms again?
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jun 30th 2008 7:35PM
You are not the Fernando Rocker I fell in love with to by annoyed by! My fellow SDF must have gotten to you with our brainwashing machine!
Lars @ Jun 30th 2008 9:06PM
"You really think Sony is going to keep its onlive service free for ever?"
Dude, MS is the ONLY company to ever charge people to play games online... I'd hope that the opposite happens and Live becomes free.
Kodros @ Jun 30th 2008 11:53PM
"You really think Sony is going to keep its onlive service free for ever?"
Yes, yes I do.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jul 1st 2008 4:19AM
huh? Nando giving semi-props to a Sony product? well, i dont remember stepping into Bizarro World, but i dont like the look of this! this has cheap horror flick written all over it!
Obie @ Jun 30th 2008 4:42PM
They need to take the core SKU behind a shed and blow it's brains out.
Seriously, what was M$ thinking?
Mr.ESC @ Jun 30th 2008 4:46PM
"Seriously, what was M$ thinking?"
"M$"
Oh no you didunt!
Obie @ Jun 30th 2008 4:48PM
Oh snapz!
samfish @ Jun 30th 2008 4:52PM
I'll tell you what I'M thinking...
...something naughty...
Noshino @ Jun 30th 2008 5:19PM
tell me!
samfish @ Jun 30th 2008 5:35PM
I'm thinking about Fernando and his Eye toy!
Ooh la la!
Aex @ Jun 30th 2008 4:43PM
Hmm, I am pleasantly amused by this rumor...
It's like the Sony "Price Drop" last year, but instead of cutting features on the new SKUs and screwing future adopters they are adding features to keep the price point screwing the early adopters... Which one burns you more?
Hilarious!
samfish @ Jun 30th 2008 4:50PM
I think any rational person would rather get more bang for their buck, rather than...er...less bang for less buck.
Aex @ Jun 30th 2008 4:54PM
Oh, I agree, for new consumers it is really no question...
But take a look at the 3 (real post) down :p
brokenscope @ Jun 30th 2008 4:43PM
Any chance I can get my own higher rpm drive and toss it onto my box....
Nope, hell is still a tad to warm for that I guess.
J.Goodwin @ Jun 30th 2008 4:46PM
Same SKU, that's ridiculous.
How would you know when to restock the 360s if the PS3s were mixed in with them on the perpetual?
Obie @ Jun 30th 2008 4:54PM
They also need one that you can freakin' defragment. My HD is the same one since launch and I am sure that thing is chock full of fragmentation files that is making it sluggish as hell.
Nate @ Jun 30th 2008 5:39PM
God I hope you're joking.
Korova *of the highlands* @ Jun 30th 2008 5:53PM
That's so 1995. I havent had to defrag anything since I blew out my Win98.

Rob Accomando @ Jun 30th 2008 4:55PM
How about dropping the 120GB HDD to $100 and a 60GB drive for $50 and the 20GB drive for $19.99?
Better yet, make the 20GB HDD free to Core and Arcade owners. What's it cost MS to make the 20GB HDD? 15 cents? This would solve the non-HDD problem.
