Sony lists first Trophy-supported PS3 games
Sony broke out its short list of Trophy system inductees today. Not surprisingly, the first confirmed titles to gain Trophy support are all first-party games. What kinda coup is this?
Update: PS3 Fanboy informs us of the first two third-party games (!) confirmed to feature Trophies: BioShock and Tiki Games' self-published PSN shooter, Novastrike.
Check out more information about Firmware 2.40's features, including the Trophy system and video of the in-game XMB in action.

Good list, too bad no mgs4
NATO_Duke @ Jun 30th 2008 11:41AM
Yeah, damn shame. It will be interesting to see this system in action.
Mr.ESC @ Jun 30th 2008 11:57AM
Yeah I also wanted to see MGS4 but thinking about it I'm still trying to get B:BB achievements so I would like to play a game the way I want just for the sake of it.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 30th 2008 12:03PM
No MGS4 Trophies? Ever or for now? Sony drops the ball, AGAIN! :(
Doom3killer @ Jun 30th 2008 12:22PM
Sony doesn't say they can't have them. Kojima must have not supported trophies. All 360 games have achievements because Microsoft forces developers to make them. Sony appears more lenient
GenBanks @ Jun 30th 2008 12:30PM
I'm going to wait to buy/rent MGSIV when they include trophies. Doesn't seem like the sort of game I'd play through twice.
I wish they would hurry up and release trophies for GTA IV though, that's a game I'd happily play through a second time.
Marty @ Jun 30th 2008 1:55PM
"Sony doesn't say they can't have them. Kojima must have not supported trophies. All 360 games have achievements because Microsoft forces developers to make them. Sony appears more lenient."
When one system requires them from the start, and another one adds them over a year later via an OS update, that's what happens.
Sony couldn't force developers to retroactively support the trophy system. These games were finished long ago - there's no way you could expect each company to go in and change the way the games work, especially when it doesn't benefit the developer at all.
KarlW @ Jun 30th 2008 2:26PM
MGS4 patch won't take long - developers have had the 2.40 SDK for a while, and MGS4 has its own achievements system built-in. All the patch needs to do is expose them to the PS3 system. It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine Konami releasing a patch at E3.
Oh, and if you want the platinum trophy, you're going to have to play through this game a fair few times. I'm on my 4th round.
ztmaya @ Jul 2nd 2008 5:15AM
i cant be botherd goin on the the ps3 no more ive gone back 2 my pc i know its a great console but home and now only certian games get trophies
sony need 2 sort it out
Mystic @ Jun 30th 2008 11:33AM
I have never seen a more boring list of games than this one.
Agathos @ Jun 30th 2008 11:38AM
Boring list? MotorStorm!? Resistance2!? Warhawk and Socom!? Can you please grant me access to this life size 3D holographic star deck that you must be gaming on?
nightmare452 @ Jun 30th 2008 11:45AM
Half of those games aren't even out yet !!! It is a boring list. Where is MGS4, Haze, Resistance 1, games people actually have now !! Come on Sony !! give me something to work here,
Trophies mean nothing to me then since I don't have this games!
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 30th 2008 11:51AM
They arent boring but it sucks that they wouldn't get the devs to at least put trophies on exclusives like R&C, Uncharted, MGS4, Tekken DR, Resistance FoM, and DAMNIT I will be pissed if WipeoutHD has none >:( Sony needs to make any future releases Trophy mandatory.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 30th 2008 12:03PM
Haze?
BTW, a lot of people have Super Stardust HD.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 30th 2008 12:09PM
HAZE trophy details leaked!! Theres only 1 trophy.

*Just got jacked by PS3 for my achievement system*
nightmare452 @ Jun 30th 2008 2:03PM
Hehehe, I only mentioned Haze cause its a game Sony has been advertising aggressively in the last month, a lot of commercial for it, although it sucks (I rented it). (I could have mentioned R&C or Uncharted if people prefer)
They only offer, what, 12 games with trophies thus far, of which only two games are out by my count. Meaning the trophy system is useless to me, and will probably be useless for a while now, but at least its out there. Now I just hope Sony forces developer to implemented from now on.
Korova *of the highlands* @ Jun 30th 2008 6:13PM
Unless all games require trophies, this system is not going to work. Is sony requiring all games releasing this holiday to be trophied?
Its a strange announcement - only a partial list. Lenient? How about some clarity?
Guerrilla @ Jun 30th 2008 11:34AM
No MGS4 trophies? That's disappointing. I was really hoping they had planned ahead to add trophies for emblems and such when the update went live.
Anton Chigurh @ Jun 30th 2008 11:34AM
Ahhh, back to Warhawk for me. I'm curious to see what sort of Trophies they have in place because I logged MANY hours in.
I know it says you have to 're-play' your games in order to receive the trophies (due to the ability to download/copy/share game save files and potential trophy exploits), but what about online games that have your stats tied to your PSN acct?
Guess we'll find out Wednesday now won't we?
xGeneral DEATHx @ Jun 30th 2008 2:18PM
I still never found out whether or not I won everything in the coin toss...
Anton Chigurh @ Jun 30th 2008 2:21PM
Hey man...you're still alive aren't you?
Would you like to re-flip?
xGeneral DEATHx @ Jun 30th 2008 2:26PM
NO! No, no, nooooooooooooo... *Nervous laugh*
I'll just take this quarter and put it somewhere safe (NOT in my pocket), and we'll call it square.

What's your PSN tag? I play a spot of Warhawk on occasion.
Dwag @ Jun 30th 2008 11:38AM
Resistance 2 starting to get better than the Halo for PS3 I was expecting(not really but I'm most likely buying it now I own 1 so why not 2 and 3)
I might actually have to give MGS4 back and buy my own if they support trophies.
Vol @ Jun 30th 2008 11:39AM
What would really be nice is if game play items could get unlocked with achievements / trophies. For instance, if you're playing Gears of War and you receive the "seriously" achievement of 10,000 kills online, then you get to play with a special character no one else has access to. In essence, make the achievements = rewards. That type of reward system would make the achievement system more relevant in game.
Vol @ Jun 30th 2008 11:43AM
Let me clarify that the rewards shouldn't give one player an advantage over the other. It should mainly be cosmetic.
Sean @ Jun 30th 2008 12:05PM
Halo 3 has done this. You get special multiplayer armor permutations for unlocking certain achievements. It’s definitely the way to go. Rewards with no game play difference.
Vol @ Jun 30th 2008 12:20PM
Ok then, we need more games than Halo that take advantage of it. :-)
GenBanks @ Jun 30th 2008 12:33PM
I know you said cosmetic, but TF2 on steam does this to get unlockable weapons. I agree though, it would sort of be like the way that people who preorder MMO's get special items to wear.
Draco Basileus @ Jun 30th 2008 11:41AM
I'm not even sure the PS3 "needs" the trophy system. I'm kind of burned out on the 360 achievement and was rather just enjoying playing the PS3 games without having to obtain some artificial meta-score.
Just an opinion.
NATO_Duke @ Jun 30th 2008 11:43AM
If you don't care about them then continue to not care and nothing in life changes.
I fail to see how it would adversely affect your gaming experience when you don't care about obtaining any of them in the first place.
Stoo @ Jun 30th 2008 11:45AM
Well you can play without having to obtain some artificial meta meta-score.
Unless of course you are pretty insecure about your online avatar.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 30th 2008 11:47AM
NATO_Duke:
If only it were true.
Listen to 1Up Yours lately. Or just play TF2 lately. The new achivement-style awards in that game completely distort the multiplayer game. Now that the Pyro has upgrades on the table, 2/3rds of people in the game are playing Pyros (while the other 1/3rd generally are medics, still catching up on their earned upgrades).
Remember the outcry over the achievement where you had to team kill?
Ignoring achievements is only an 80% solution. Unfortunately in multiplayer games other people's achievement farming can still detract from your play.
If you can't tell, I'm somewhat anti-achievement (and trophy) and I'm massively anti-gamerscore.
NATO_Duke @ Jun 30th 2008 12:25PM
LS2LS7
While I see your point, I don't agree that its that big of an issue. How many games are out on the 360 and how many of those have these issues? I can think of 2 - GoW and TF2. This is not some huge online problem that plagues the system. Yeah, in those games there seems to be an annoying achievement whore element, but normally it has absolutely no effect on gameplay other than what you allow it to have.
GenBanks @ Jun 30th 2008 12:42PM
You're exaggerating a bit in terms of the TF2 update impact... While there are still more pyros than before the update, that was the intention since it was one of the least played classes. We'll see what happens by the time they finish updating all the classes.
Anyway, you're forgetting the factor of 'fun'. Sure it's 'pointless' to unlock achievements... But non-gamers say the same thing about games in general. So for a gamer to be saying achievements are pointless is... pointless.
Draco Basileus @ Jun 30th 2008 1:00PM
NATO_Duke:
I guess my point should have been more specific. I'm not sure Sony should be spending the time and resources getting the trophy system working. In-Game XMB, I'm all for it. Trophies, not so much. I'd rather Sony push ahead and do their own thing, instead of trying to copy-cat some other system.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 30th 2008 11:44AM
What? Uncharted isn't there?
You actually go through the game picking up gold, silver and pewter trophy-looking objects and they don't appear as trophies outside the game?
I'm rather surprised.
Neptune @ Jun 30th 2008 4:38PM
Yeah, I have 100% gamescore to show. To barricades!
browntown @ Jun 30th 2008 11:51AM
THis si first party only
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 30th 2008 1:31PM
Good catch. Although perhaps Sony is just leaving the duties of issuing press releases for 3rd party games to the 3rd parties themselves.
Mike @ Jun 30th 2008 11:51AM
I guess the leak forced them to release this info before E3...that or they don't care about E3.
Andrew Yoon @ Jun 30th 2008 12:39PM
No, it's because E3 will be about other stuff.
I DeX I @ Jun 30th 2008 11:55AM
I don't want to sound picky, but shouldn't the trophies be different shapes...bronze, silver, gold, platinum...not just different colors?
Biz @ Jun 30th 2008 5:22PM
Bronze, silver, gold and platinum aren't shapes.
deaftly @ Jun 30th 2008 11:58AM
Kinda odd that I'll have to get the pain trophies all over again since the game already had trophies to begin with. Can't wait to see how this update goes.
Korova *of the highlands* @ Jun 30th 2008 6:22PM
It hearkens back to the good old "get a second job" comment, doesnt it.
Ah, you'll just have to play it again.
Dark Archon @ Jun 30th 2008 12:02PM
What's wrong with Joystiq today? It is clearly stated on the Playstation Blog that they are not publishing a list of all trophy-supported games but a list of -FIRST PARTY- supported games. What's with all the poison towards the PS3 today, guys?
"Sony broke out its short list of trophy system inductees today. Not surprisingly, the first confirmed titles to gain trophy support are all first-party games."
That's what it was supposed to be. A list of FIRST PARTY GAMES. A quote from the official blog:
"PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:"
Get a grip guys. This is getting a little bit annoying...
