Sony denies PS2 downloads on PSN, image 'mocked up'
Sony America bigwig Patrick Seybold tells GamePro that he's "not sure" where the image of PS2 games available on the PSN came from and "at this point" there are no announcements or plans of PS2 games for download on the PS3.
The user who originally posted the image on N4G said he received the pic from a Sony Europe insider and that the PS2 DLC will be unveiled at E3 in a couple weeks.

Tell ya what... if that's a mock up, it's a damn good one.
I think it's safe to say that this will actually happen. It would certainly reinforce the lack of backwards compatibility in the 40 gig PS3. Sure, they claim it's removed from that model to cut back the price point, but this possible addition to the PSN reveals the $$ sigsn in Sony's eyes.
Marty @ Jul 1st 2008 11:57AM
If the backward compatibility is truly non-existent in certain SKU's, then it doesn't matter if the media is on disc or in digital download format. It won't play either way.
Dan @ Jul 1st 2008 12:40PM
Software emulation is not impossible though, hell many coders have gone far making the PS2 playable through software emulation with very little documentation.
With Sony having obviously have all the information needed for the PS2 I'm sure they will have software emulation ready by the time they really announce it, regardless of what sku you have. I'm sure they are denying this since they wish to announce it at E3.
This is Sony's answer to MS xbox original and will definitely be a good one with the PS2's strong library.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 1st 2008 12:45PM
@Marty
I'm not sure you understood what he's saying. The idea here is that Sony may have working PS2 emulator that runs purely in software. This would allow BC to work on the 40 GB models.
samfish @ Jul 1st 2008 12:52PM
His statement, like all PR speak, doesn't rule it out from EVER happening...but as far as PR speak goes, that's a pretty firm denial that PS2 emulation isn't coming any time soon.
Maverick Saturn @ Jul 1st 2008 12:52PM
You dont need software emulation ¬_¬ PS3 has internet does it not? All you have to do, is create a fake image, upload it and go to the url its on using the PS3 browser.
For videos, they make fake sites. This could have been done using adobe photshop, in some cases MSpaint works.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 1st 2008 1:20PM
@Maverick Saturn
I think you're talking about something totally different than the rest of us. Obviously the image could be fake. In fact, that doesn't even need to be a PS3 that image if coming from. It could just be a PC displaying the image.
As to the topic... I guess we'll just have to wait for E3. This is a pretty typical PR denial.
Noshino @ Jul 1st 2008 2:34PM
samfish,
shall I remind you of the firm denial by Nintendo of the DS "upgrade" and then have them announce the DS Lite the next day?...
MrEverdred01 @ Jul 1st 2008 3:51PM
This is actually pretty easy when you think about it. All they would need is ms paint. You would just have to do a screen capture of the store, get that .bmp file and replace all the ps1 games with ps2 games, write a little description using the same font, and then put up the image on full screen and take a photo of the screen using a camera.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 1st 2008 11:31AM
I think pretty much everyone knew the image was fake, the important thing is are they really working on it? Guess we'll find out at E3
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 1st 2008 11:40AM
When are the attended conferences?
I know Nintendo one is in July 15 in the morning... what are the dates for Sony and Microsoft?
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 1st 2008 11:43AM
That's a good question. I have no idea when the others are.
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 1st 2008 12:11PM
What character is that on your avatar Fernando? Ive changed mine to Old Snake on firefox but it hasn't changed, dont know why =/
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jul 1st 2008 12:13PM
@Fenix
Really? You really don't know who that is? For shame Fenix. For shame.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 1st 2008 12:14PM
I think it's protoman from the mega man series.
DangerMouse @ Jul 1st 2008 12:15PM
Off topic, but posts keep disappearing and reappearing later for me. It's been going on for a few days. Am i the only one?
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 1st 2008 12:22PM
@Tmac
Thanks, thats what I thought.
@Vegeta
Yeah, I think I posted yesterday that Ive never played a megaman game in my life lol. Too bad so sad I guess...
@Fernando
Why dont you have a Nintendo character????? o_O
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 1st 2008 12:24PM
Protoman =p
samfish @ Jul 1st 2008 12:44PM
Kids these days!
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 1st 2008 12:47PM
@DangerMouse
"Off topic, but posts keep disappearing and reappearing later for me. It's been going on for a few days. Am i the only one?"
No, you're not the only one. If the posts disappear, just hit the refresh button on your browser one or twice and they'll usually return.
DangerMouse @ Jul 1st 2008 3:25PM
thanks.
Dovi @ Jul 1st 2008 9:01PM
"Why dont you have a Nintendo character????? o_O"
Protoman IS a Nintendo character.
Skunk Ape @ Jul 1st 2008 11:50AM
Its obviously a mockup. You can tell because it was supposed to be in Europe before anywhere else and thats just crazy talk.
dark_inchworm @ Jul 1st 2008 11:53AM
Eh, in many cases it'd likely be cheaper to find the original PS2 releases anyway. Oh, and... I support hard copies.
The Aggie CEO @ Jul 1st 2008 11:55AM
it fairly easy to photoshop an image, put it on a TV and take a picture of it......
done it plenty of times.........
Maverick Saturn @ Jul 1st 2008 12:53PM
Exactly
leadbelly @ Jul 1st 2008 11:58AM
hmmm...
it might be fake, but interestingly enough, i don't see PS2 mentioned anywhere.
my point is, the guy shoots down claims that PS2 titles will be made available for download, but maybe it's not actually a "PS2" title, maybe it's a full version of MGS2 available for download on "PS3".
if konami made a port of the game, then it wouldn't make any difference what version of PS3 you have. it would make perfect sense after the release of MGS4 to make earlier titles available as well.
FOXHOUND @ Jul 1st 2008 12:04PM
Why exhaust the manpower? Konami would probably tell them to buy the MGS collection they released this year, and play it on a PS2(they're seriously like... $65 used) or a BC-ready PS3.
favian @ Jul 1st 2008 12:13PM
why deny something awesome?
NATO_Duke @ Jul 1st 2008 12:25PM
...I think its a good idea to deny an awesome thing when you in fact haven't been able to do it. Its also not a bad idea if you don't want spoilers out before E3.
leadbelly @ Jul 1st 2008 12:20PM
@foxhound
well, first of all, it's just a possible explanation for it. however, there are going to be people who have MGS4, but haven't played any other MGS game. people who only have the 40gig PS3 are going to be stuck. for that reason, i'm sure there is a market for it.
MGS4 is kind of the sequel to MGS2 which has actually been mentioned before somewhere, so releasing that particular game on PSN makes sense.
Rask @ Jul 1st 2008 12:36PM
This will be a huge slap in the face of all non-20/60GB owners.
"Sorry, but your PS3 isn't compatible with PS2 games in disk form. However, once you fork over 15-20$ and download it, it will work just fine!
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 1st 2008 12:50PM
If this rumor is true, how do you know these same games won't work in disk form too? That's a possibility.
Dan @ Jul 1st 2008 12:49PM
Most people may not have hard copies of the game anyway still, and if you chances are its scratched up unless you a God of being careful with discs that are over 5 yrs old.
I rather by the game and have stored on the hdd for around $10-$20 at most then buy a scratched up used copy of a ps2 game.
samfish @ Jul 1st 2008 12:54PM
NONE of my discs are scratched up with one or two exceptions, going back to the Saturn. To be honest, I never understood how people's discs get scratched in the first place.
Do most people just not put them back in their cases as soon as they remove them from the console or something?
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 1st 2008 1:41PM
Damn Samfish for once I agree. I take really good care of my discs, its just too much money not to.
Noshino @ Jul 1st 2008 2:40PM
samfish,
I take pretty good care of mine and they still get damaged...
crazy brothers, insane relatives, drunk friends, aggressive cats, etc...might have been the reason behind my scratched discs....sigh
PSN & GAMERTAG: jorojoserojas - Wii FC: 0749-8609-3752-6926 @ Jul 1st 2008 3:03PM
I protect my discs just fine...
...it's the people who come into my room and DON'T take care of them that make my discs unreadable.
Mr Khan @ Jul 1st 2008 5:44PM
Being an only child has its advantages, i suppose. I was always able to keep my discs mostly spotless. Plus i was always raised to regard optical discs as extremely fragile, as my dad always thought that they were
Namssorg @ Jul 1st 2008 3:01PM
Cool, Sony denied it. Kinda like how Blizzard denied that Diablo III was in the works when they registered diabloiii.com.
Devil240Z @ Jul 1st 2008 6:19PM
Clearly its a fake, but yet in still it seems to me to be a logical next step for the PSN. I do feel that the amount of PS1 games to be lacking thought. SCEA needs to match japanse classic ps1 game offerings in our store.
Maximun2k10 @ Jul 1st 2008 7:31PM
They can start bringing PS3 titles to the PS3, that would be cool...
