The PS3 Trophy sound and other 2.40 FAQs answered
68
With the help of PSN director of operations, Eric Lampel, PlayStation.Blog has compiled a Firmware v2.40 FAQ, answering many of our most common questions. In most cases, with "No." Voice messaging? No. In-game web browsing? Negative. In-game display settings? Nope. In-game shopping? Uh-uh. In-game music streaming? Pfft. Cross-game invites? Sorry. Well, okay, what about Trophies -- will they make a funky little noise when unlocked (like Achievements!)? Of course not ... er, wait a minute: "I got an email from Eric asking me to update this post; there *will* be a sound effect when a user unlocks a trophy. You'll be hearing it soon enough. Hopefully a lot."

Check out more information about Firmware 2.40's features, including the Trophy system and video of the in-game XMB in action.

I thought the same thing when I was reading that FAQ on the playstation blog yesterday. He made it seem like in game xmb does nothing.
To be fair though, some of the features supposedly "missing" are also features the 360 doesn't have like in game access to the store, access to display settings and obviously access to a web browser.
Still though it's a damn shame they at least couldn't put in game voice chat. What the hell is up with that?

when has Joystiq been fair with the PS3? you know all other consoles allow you to go to the store when playing, yea and the XBox 360 allow you to play another game in game, and use a browser.
This is a start, this update has the features I most wanted, text messaging in game, and change sound output setting. I think that voice chat will come later, but I really hope this feature is only available to people on different games, I will not like to know that people can just voice chat in realtime on COD4 when a player is dead and the other is still alive (text messaging is not realtime)

Actually it does. Usually you can access the store in the game menu without having to leave the actual game.

I hope its a really cool sound effect. I kinda like the sound it makes when you go into the PSN store but doubt it will be that. Either way this is sweet :)
But can it top this? :D

What would you need in-game display settings for?

Yea Im thinking the same, Idk but the sarcasm on the posts nowadays are starting to feel a bit confusing and just weird.
I dont know if he's actually sounding annoyed at the things you can't do or just poking fun and being sarcastic.
I highly doubt anyone is gonna complaign not being able to buy anything while in the middle of a game, and like you said what the hell you need to change in the display settings in the middle game. Pretty much almost 80% of the stuff the PS3 update cant do goes the same for the 360.

I forgot that there's no internal scaler, like in the 360. I guess I just take that for granted.

this is essentially the closer that we will ever get to a "one console future".
Each company will brainstorm ways to be different and better than the competition. Then, when these ideas become huge hits, the other companies will "be inspired" by these features and will add them to their system. Sometimes they might even make them better...
No real sign of originality but, in the end, its the gamers who win by not missing out (too much) on things that are only available on another console...
Long live competition...

Actually, a few xbox 360 games can access their own part (page) of the XBLM.
Forza 2 is one of those games ...

Never going to happen. Everyone starts at 0. You want trophies, play the game over. This is why I'm stopping my playthoughs of MGS4. I'll play it over for a 3rd time when the trophies come thru.

Awesome. As stupid as it sounds, that little sound effect is a big deal to many people.
Btw, does anyone know if there are any plans to develope a PSN website similar to the XBL site? I love being able to check my messages, send messages, and add friends from my computer and use it pretty much every night to see if my friends have started up a room of Gears yet before booting up my box.
It would be cool as hell if I could pull up the Live site and the PSN site and see what my friends on each are playing and pick whichever game (across either console) I felt like playing at the time.

Thats exactly what I want too. I like that I can check on my Gamertag throughout the day, hating on my buddies who are playing games while I'm at work :P
Its crazy because like in 2 or 3 more firmware updates PSN will really be on par with LIVE. I cant wait to see what MS does about it.

Avatars damnit! Give us new avatars!!! What's the excuse for the hold up on THAT? I want an Old Snake MGS4 avatar when peeps are looking at my Level 0 and No Trophies Unlocked gamercard. :P
Hopefully the devs of the really good games will start patching their games with Trophies soon. Until then I will be at 0. SuperStardustHD is okay but I doubt I'll buy it. Who knows...

I agree. I, myself, will buy it as soon as I don't have to give PSN my credit card number.
How about those points cards, Sony? I know they exist...unfortunately I've yet to see one.

This update is a big letdown. I was excited about the custom soundtracks at least until it said that you can't stream from a media server. So I can stream music from a media server, through my PS3, to my PSP, but I can't stream music on the PS3 while playing a game. Lame. They should have ditched trophies for now, and focused on making chat work properly at least.

Slightly off-topic but does anyone know if/when we can change our personal icon in the friend's list?
I'm sick of being represented by some effeminate cowboy perpetually doffing my hat to people. I'd like to change it to the icon I have associated with my PS3 user login. Which, funny enough considering it's based on my own appearance, is my icon here.
Cheers.
BTW: is that really the 360 achievement sound? It's strangely and surprisingly subtle and inconspicuous. I would have expected something more like a loud bombastic voice declaring:
"ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED M0THERF@CK3R!"

Yeah you can change it. Just go to your friends list and highlight your PSNID, then push triangle (I think) and it should give you options like account management. But there arent that many good ones IMO. Unles your a bug fan of R&C or some generic kiddie avatars. I have my PSN user log in as an Old Snake avatar which I wish they let us use for our Gamer Avatars as well. :(

Thanks ... I've been around a 360. I've played a few games on one but I don't own one and don't plan on doing so. I've definitely never been around a 360 when an achievement was unlocked.
Regarding the profile change. I could never pick my own image as my icon when I was setting up my profile. Can this be done now? Maybe it was in an update which I missed. I had to pick aforementioned cowboy dude with the strange hat when setting up at the start. At least he was better than the amorphous grey face guy with the weird eyes.

Thanks Fenix. That's what I'm talking about. I want to be able to use my User Icon as my GAMER icon.
Not have to pick one from a default list.
Why is this so hard?
Is it because people could put up a pr0n image as their Gamer Icon and this might offend people if they added said smut-merchant as a friend?
Just thinking outloud ...

Pr0n and the fact they there is money to be made off of gamer avatars. Now that there will be PSN gamercards we might see an influx of pics. Thats what I'm hoping at least.

I'm a programmer myself, and to be quite honest, I think the 360's ability to allow private voice chat across different games was something that the designers had in mind from the very beginning...and as they built the 360's network features, they designed them in such a way as to allow communication of that type.
I don't know a whole lot about the PS3's OS, but seriously...if the system wasn't designed with that sort of communication in mind, I would imagine that it'll be an immense undertaking to try to get it working. Obviously there's a great demand for cross-game voice chat, because the 360 does it so well, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it doesn't happen on PS3. If that is the case, I wouldn't fault the team working on firmware updates...obviously, they're doing their best.
Just because a feature is highly desired doesn't mean it's easy to implement. I bet that a lot had to be done to get in-game XMB, otherwise we'd have seen it sooner.

that is the reason I think this is only a start, they worked hard to refactor a codebase not designed to run the XMB in game, to allow that. If they did a good programming job new features can be possible, and by the time they needed I think they took the long road to a better solution than a awful hack

YYR said it very clearly and i applaud him for that. Its exactly what i thought.
Its a big change to the OS when considering the PS button does so little so far. i thought most people just wanted friends list msg and chat. but Sony pulled it off and gave the entire XMB.

If there is one thing that Sony hates it's when people show them up for not delivering something that their competition already does.
I see cross-game voice chat happening. Even if it murders 100 devos in the process - Sony will crack that whip until it's there.
Look at PS2 BC on the 40GB version. They can deny it all they want but I'd bet hard cash that there is a team of people trying to figure it out how it can be done without the chip and be completely software emulated.
Sounds impossible but what's the point in lauding your Cell chip if it can't surmoud such a thorny issue?
:)

The FAQ sort of states it will working towards features like Private Chat...and so far the In Game XMB is here. So everything sounds good for now and in the future. Good enough for me.
