Chrono Trigger DS confirmed for North America this holiday
Well, that didn't take long. After Square Enix quietly launched a teaser website seemingly devoted to bringing fan fave Chrono Trigger to the Nintendo DS, we've managed to scrape our jaws off the floor just in time to see that the company has confirmed plans for the title, and that the game will ship in time for North American gamers to pull it out of their stockings this holiday season.
With the original having shipped some 2.5 million copies the world over, Squeenix calls the portable take on the 1995 SNES role-playing classic "newly revamped," promising a new dungeon and wireless play of some sort. Touch screen support is also promised, something we're getting plenty of practice at as we paw at our computer screens in eager anticipation.

It's like Squ'Enix loves us or something. :]
I might as well start saving for the holidays now, given all the stuff I'll need to pick up for myself(ha ha) and others.
ThePerfectCompanion @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:36PM
What exactly makes this game so awesome again?
I never played it so to be honest I don't understand why everyone's getting excited...
Was it the storyline? Characters? Gameplay? Was it revolutionary or innovative somehow?
Just curious?
Alex @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:48PM
It's everything you loved about the old Square (character development, great story, dynamic gameplay, lovely characters), in a whole new saga, no more Zidanes, no more orbs, no more giant chickens, Janus has a lot more charisma than that idiot with a really long sword his really small... idea of justice...
You better play it.
NoHitHair @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:28PM
ThePerfectCompanion--
Chrono Trigger is argued as the greatest RPG ever created. I don't agree but I would certainly place it in my top 5. It's a very creative and innovative game and you should definitely find a time to play it.
Jesse @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:23PM
If they really loved us they'd put FF6 out again.
eldee @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:25PM
Don't get me wrong.. I love chrono trigger (huge understatement). But uh, it's already out. You can play it on your choice of SNES, PSX, or PC (via emulators).
If Square/Enix loved us, they would be giving us Chrono Break or CT2. :|
Maybe they'll throw in a few bonuses that will make me want to buy it, but I'm not all that excited about another CT port. I was really hoping the countdown would be either Chrono Break or Chrono Trigger II.
Donald @ Jul 2nd 2008 3:33PM
"If they really loved us they'd put FF6 out again."
They have.

Man, this holiday keeps getting better and better. A new dungeon smells of win.
Obie @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:35AM
I never played CT back in the day, so I can't wait to try it. I hope the game has not faded with age tho :(
t_m @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:12AM
it hasn't.
I played it for the first time about 2 years ago and fell in love with it. Its easily in my top ten games, despite only getting to play it 10 years late on an emulator.
Infact, i'm more worried that if they decide to translate it into 3d it'll lose all the charm.
Obie @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:19AM
Well hot damn, it's on my Xmas list then!
Josh @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:55AM
I played it last year for the first time (well, for the first time *seriously*), and didn't like it. I think it hasn't aged well, with poor characterization and an unnecessarily slow battle system.
The music is amazing, though.
Anyway, I think Square-Enix should focus on new games, like The World Ends with You, instead of constantly making remake after remake.
svenhoek @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:24PM
I played it about 3 years ago, one of the best RPGs ive ever played. When you get done with it try to find a copy of Chrono Cross (for PSX) as well. Both are excellent games.
Maybe we'll hear something about Chrono Break in the future? *fingers crossed*
Dasutin @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:02PM
@Josh did you play it on PSX? Because the battles are very slow on the PSX, almost to the point where you cant play it because its so slow.
Josh @ Jul 3rd 2008 8:38AM
No, Super NES. North American version.
Hmmm...Maybe "slow" is not the best word...It's more like..."primitive" =/
Josh @ Jul 3rd 2008 8:59AM
I think with the realization that I don't like Chrono Trigger also came the realization that I don't like old RPGs in general. The genre has just been refined so much over the years...
So, CT is definitely an old-school RPG. If you can handle that, then go for it, since it's one of the best old-school RPGs out there. Just don't make the same mistake I did and go into it thinking it will be as awesome as the Internet would have you believe, though.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:34AM
No, I'm going to disagree with josh. The genre hasn't been "refined" over the years, its been overcomplicated (system wise) and watered down (plot and character wise).
CT is the best console RPG ever, and nothing that has come out since even comes close.
You're just a bad person :)
Josh @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:59PM
I find the characterization in Chrono Trigger wafer-thin, and while the plot is good, the story doesn't give me much of an emotional response one way or another.
And none of the RPGs I've played recently have been "overcomplicated".
ramshambo @ Jul 9th 2008 9:35AM
As far as I can tell, they only thing they've improved over CT is adding retarded card collecting crap.
John Z @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:35AM
Sssssh. Listen! You hear that?
That's the sound of a billion eBay speculators wailing and gnashing their teeth as the value of their beat-to-hell, scuzzy, no-box-or-manual original CT cartridges drops through the basement.
I know, it's a little faint. It's kind of hard to hear over the sound of ten billion gamers rejoicing that they'll get their chance to play one of the top 5 games for the SNES.
Zertoss @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:38AM
Is that what that noise is? I thought it was related to Diablo 3.
John Z @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:45AM
Yeah, this week has pretty much been Gamer Heaven no matter your preferences. The rejoicing has been quite loud of late.
John @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:21AM
Even though you can get it on PS1...
samfish @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:25AM
No, the Diablo III whining is being drowned out by the shimmering sound of rainbows.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:31AM
You can also play the ROM but I don’t do that.
capt_carl @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:00PM
That's good for me, since I still want a Super Nintendo cart of the game. I have FF Chronicles, but it's not the same. :(
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 2nd 2008 5:34PM
@John:
The PS1 version sucks because of LOADING TIMES FOR EVERY SINGLE BATTLE.
Sure, the animated cutscenes by Bird Studio are nice and all, but I'd prefer a better GAME than better EXTRAS.
Maverick Saturn @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:37AM
Something about that cover reminds me of dragon ball z :S
T @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:45AM
The guy who did character design for DBZ also did it for Chrono Trigger.
I think he was also involved with a number of Dragon Quest games.
Noshino @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:49AM
uh...yah, Akira Toriyama...his style is actually quite noticeable...
He has worked on many games, most famous ones being Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon...
He has a huge impact in Japan, and at some point he was part of the "Dream Team"
Maverick Saturn @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:54AM
Thought so, I recognised the design style and had suspicions but wasn't too sure.
T @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:45AM
WIN. Win win win win win!
I didn't get into RPGs until long after Chrono (I was a kid...I was impatient...and stupid).
This comes at a time when I've got the money (and lack of will power) that I was just about to cave and buy a copy somehow.
Insta-Reserve.

tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:46AM
Well it's nice to know a DS game will have touch support /sarcasm
This is good news to me as well, but for another reason. If Square-Enix is remaking even this game, then that means I will eventually get my FF7 ps3/ps4 remake. Great day indeed.
WRE (PSN: WorstReviewEver; Gamertag: HaloKissesBoys; Wii Friend Code: 4204-4590-6106-3583) @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:13AM
"If Square-Enix is remaking even this game, then that means I will eventually get my FF7 ps3/ps4 remake."
"..EVEN this game"?
Dude, if people had taste, Chrono Trigger would be the one with all of the spin-offs and movie sequels and FF7 would be languishing somewhere waiting for a DS or PSP remake. Chrono Trigger was so much better than FF7 that no measure exists to accurately compare the two.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:35AM
First of all I meant this game having a remake wasn't a sure thing. Second, what you said is all opinion. Chrono Trigger is boring the piss out of me right now, so much that I'm debating with myself whether I should suck it up and beat it or delete it off my laptop. Again I ask someone to tell me what the hell is the big deal with this game because I've found nothing that special about it so far.
I know I know, you're likely one of THOSE guys who hate all the final fantasies that came to playstation consoles because that's when they became popular. It's cliche at this point. Don't get your panties all bunched up
Boy With Balls on Chin @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:04PM
That is your opinion and mine is that FFVII was better. I love CT, dont get me wrong but 7 is the best ever and is getting a PS3 remake whether you like it or not :D
WRE (PSN: WorstReviewEver; Gamertag: HaloKissesBoys; Wii Friend Code: 4204-4590-6106-3583) @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:41PM
"I know I know, you're likely one of THOSE guys who hate all the final fantasies that came to playstation consoles because that's when they became popular."
Nope. I fucking love FF8. FF7 was okay but it was inferior to FF6 in so many ways. From the story to the battle system (Espers > Materia) 6 was a much better game and 7 was something of a letdown, comparatively. 8 was angsty but, shit, I was 17 at the time.
"...7 is the best ever and is getting a PS3 remake whether you like it or not :D"
Hey, if you guys want yet another CGI-fest for your Blu-ray players I won't stand in your way.
Fatass of Rebuttalness @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:42PM
Jordan, while there are many people who dislike the newer FF games just to jump on the hate train and be accepted, you'll find that there are just as many of us who dislike the newer FF games for good reasons. I hold Final Fantasy VI as the golden standard at which I'll compare all Final Fantasy games, and none of the newer Final Fantasy games sans IX and XII come close to it. Of course, this is my own opinion, but Final Fantasy VII just plain wasn't that good. Loved the atmosphere, abhorred the terrible cookie cutter plot development, the two dimensional characters, the jumpy art style (by jumpy, I meant each cutscene was done in a different style than the last) and the overall lameness of the product.
People like Chrono Trigger because it has an awesome battle system, a deep plot (that will admittedly get confusing at points but is tied up pretty well at the end, something I couldn't really say about Final Fantasy VII), and pretty decent character development. If I were to go back and play it today, I'd probably be a little bored too, simply because games from the SNES era don't age well, but that's why everyone is embracing this news.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:47PM
Thank you Fatass for at least attempting to explain why this game gets so much attention. Even though I am bored out of my mind with Chrono Trigger you've convinced me to stick with it and beat it.
It's not the age of the game that bothers me, because I still enjoy Super Mario RPG and FF7 among others despite their old age. It just hasn't done anything special to grab me so far, but I will at least finish it.
4MyFriends @ Jul 2nd 2008 3:37PM
Who's to say a FF7 remake would happen on the PS3? Last I checked, it wasn't a Sony owned property, nor is the PS3 the best candidate for Square-Enix if they want to make the most money.
Since I know the kind of response I will get, I'll say it now; Square-Enix didn't care about graphics when they made FF10-12 and X-2 PS2 exclusives over a Xbox release as well.
eyao @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:47AM
Wow Square Enix is non-stop putting out fantastic games on the DS. I hope "newly revamped" means more than just a new dungeon though - chalk up another game I must get this holiday.
Matt @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:48AM

Joe @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:48AM
I would have liked a Wii version but I guess this will be ok.
Avoli @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:46PM
Thank you so much for saying that. Sometimes I feel alone in that same opinion.
Matthew @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:52AM
Well, I've resisted getting a DS for this long. But this Christmas, guess I'll have to...
Richard Mitchell @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:55AM
