GameStop officially acquires NZ's Gamesman
Even the Kiwis were no match for the armed and fully operational GameStop empire as it acquired New Zealand's largest independent gaming chain. GameDaily reports that New Zealand's The Gamesman will be absorbed into the GameStop collective and bring the company's presence in the country to 38 stores. This news confirms rumors from last month of The Gamesman's demise.
On the bright side, Phil McPhee, general manager of The Gamesman, says the move will "enhance the service and experience for customers." Wow, Gamesman's customer service must have been awful! Good thing it got bought out by GameStop.

"We are Gamestop. Lower your hand-helds and surrender your consoles. Your technology and biological likeness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile."

Resistance is only $39.99. WHAT A STEAL!
... what?

Looks like I'll have to stop by Gamestop on the way home from work and pick up Resistance with my Edge card.
LaughingTarget @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:22PM
Would you like the strategy guide to go along with that resistance? It's 10% off if you buy it today!

No thanks, I already beat it with a friend on his PS3 when it first came out. I just figured I'd get it for my library since it's at a low price. Also there is nothing I would like to preorder.

It was. Truely it was.
At least we've still got GPStore.co.nz, and that works just dandy.
juju187 @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:41PM
im sorry but what the hell are the kiwis, are we talking bird ,fruit or other?
Moorio - XBL: peacebyanymeans @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:54PM
Kiwi is a common term that means a resident of New Zealand.
Stevo @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:28PM
The Kiwi is our national icon, its an endangered flightless bird, native to NZ. And we call ourselves kiwi's as well, as moorio stated, residents of NZ.

you learn something new everyday, thanks

I love this picture :D

Some parts of NZ still have JB Hi-Fi, and there are many other non-specialist retailers who also stock videogames. It's not all bad, but certainly not a great move for the industry.
Gamesman's service was average, at best, but i can't see it improving with this GameStop/EB acquisition.
Most people over here see GameStop as the evil corporate empire that they clearly are, and treat them with the disdain they deserve.
That will not change.
Windmill @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:14PM
EB games rocks. Seriously. *IF* you use them right. If you do, they're so much better than gpstore. I'm very glad that the gamesman has been absorbed into EB games, its about bloody well time, gamesman sucks.
Yes Kiwi's are what we call ourselves, huzzah!
UNC_Samurai @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:08PM
I remember EB Games. I worked for EB. It was a great company. I still wonder why they let those brain-dead bean counters that stopped drooling long enough to run Gamestop buy them out.
Parsnipzilla @ Jul 3rd 2008 12:16AM
EB is only good for preowned games.
There, I SAID IT!
Still, GamesMan stores were just; cooool
Matt Ferens @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:24PM
With so many alternatives that are beginning to sell used games, I am seeing less and less reason to go to GameStop now.
