After
issues were reported with the PlayStation 3's
2.40 firmware update, it appears the update has been completely pulled from the Network. This blogger had not updated yet and, when attempting to, was told the latest version was already installed. A tipster reported the same thing. We've contacted Sony for comment and will update as soon as we hear back. If you haven't updated yet, give it a shot and let us know if you're successful.
[
Update: Sony just
updated the PlayStation blog stating that it has "temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline" due to "a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3."]
[Thanks, Ian]

Right after downloading the firmware (before installing it) my PS3 locked up and I couldn't even turn it off by holding my finger on the power "button". But I flipped the power cut-off switch on the back of the PS3 off and on again, then it turned on and proceeded to install the update. Tested it out for a bit last night before heading to sleep... seemed fine. Had me scared for a moment there.
Tombstone @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:09AM
@Lars: Same thing happened to me. But my PS3 is working fine.

Ah, so THAT's why it wouldn't let me. I thought my PS3 was broken or something.
I am currently feeling an unusual mix of relief and annoyance.
Zertoss @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:32PM
This makes me feel better about being at work and not home in my underwear like the PS3 Fanboy guys.
But not enough to stop being totally jealous of them.
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:32PM
Hope my PS3 doesn't keel over :(
Jettic @ Jul 2nd 2008 5:11PM
What version do you have?
Jettic @ Jul 2nd 2008 5:12PM
My 80gig is doing fine =]
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:16PM
40gb, I'm just bs'n I navigated through it last night and played a game and everything. Worked like a charm. :D
superaktieboy @ Jul 3rd 2008 4:57AM
yeah.. hopefully they release a patch for this problem fast enough... coz i have 60GB updated to 2.4 and i really hope it doesn't brick at a random time.. eventhough ive played yesterday without a problem..
NATO_Duke @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:23PM
Fenix, did you lose game saves?
Mr Awesomer @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:32PM
Just upgraded... to 2.36
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:33PM
I heard there were problems with this update, just as I've stopped seeing RROD issues with the Falcon 360s, I'm hearing of many more problems with the PS3 now. I'm going to wait to buy one again until all is fixed, I'm hearing mostly that the Blu-Ray drive becomes faulty.
: (
j.howlett @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:55PM
if you still have your broken ps3 pay the $100 or so to get it fixed then sell it. you did say it was a 60gig right? and gta4 was your only bluray game. they go for alot of cash, i think its worth it
DarkNessBear @ Jul 2nd 2008 5:00PM
This is the only issue i've ever heard of. And they took it down and are fixing it. So it should be ok.
Arno @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:33PM
Is this the update that makes the PS3 good?
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:35PM
The PS3 has always been good, its just you lowly 360 and Wii peasants could not comprehend the power of the Cell and Blu-Ray. You were jealous but now are starting to see the light.
; )
Slight Defect @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:16PM
you are both idiots and ur both the reason this industry is starting to blow.
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:58PM
I get voted down for playful sarcasm? ; (
Mr.ESC @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:34PM
The 2.40 causes a malfunction, making your PS3 act like a xbox 360.
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:36PM
Zing? o_O
LaughingTarget @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:39PM
If it makes the PS3 get compelling exclusives and a lower price point, why did they drop it?
(RROD has been irrelevant for 7 or 8 months, so that can't be what you're referring to)
Obie @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:42PM
Does the PS3 even have a red ring? or would that be a "blu-ring"? ;)
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:50PM
"RROD has been irrelevant for 7 or 8 months, so that can't be what you're referring to"
Irrelevant for most people that purchased new systems within that period... sure. Doesn't apply to people still stuck in the refurb loop or people with ticking time bombs purchased previous to that time period.
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:53PM
Right now, the PS3 has the YLOD (Yellow Light of Death) and the Blu-Ray drive conking out, the latter which happened to my 60gb after playing GTA4, lots others are having the problem too.
And now 2.40 firmware is messing up PS3s so Sony had to remove it? Now the 360 is in the clear and PS3 is entering build quality hell.
LaughingTarget @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:53PM
True, but at the rates of RRODing that many exaggerating posters like to throw out, all of them are dead and buried by now.
SimbaDogg @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:58PM
@ laughing target
irrelevant for 7-8 months? what are you smoking BUDDY. my friend bought a 360 last summer only to have it fail in december, got a new one right after christmas (had to wait a few weeks because of the holiday season premium shortage) and that JUST RRoD about 2 weeks ago. so yeah, it still happens...PAL
j.howlett @ Jul 2nd 2008 5:09PM
its not just rrod its other things like graphics chips and disk trays that aren't covered in the 3 year extension.
BSTKiller @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:35PM
So if 2.4 is gone...what is in 2.5!
Didn't have any probs with updating but I'm glad SONY reacted fast and pulled it.
NotNormal23224 @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:57PM
Updated my PS3 too last night and it's working fine as well, it was a launch 20GB that I upgraded the drive to 120GB
steverl22 @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:27PM
Just rushed home to update after a lazy day at work, DAMN IT!!!
Steven @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:37PM

deaftly @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:43PM
that got taken down also (just checked)
JW @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:37PM
I upgraded to 2.40 last night and everything is running smooth so far (60GB system). I've even managed to find some friends to play MGO with using in-game XMB.... imagine that. Stupid Konami.....
DangerMouse @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:36PM
I was reading the playstation boards earlier, and it looks like people's PS3's are going dead after the update. Mine seems to be fine, but sucks for whoever it does happen to.
deaftly @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:37PM
The PS3 forums are getting pretty funny, ALOT of broken systems. Soooo glad I didn't update mine.
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=3042817
Neebs @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:42PM
Mine is working fine, 40GB.
Less is moar mi>
GGCAN @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:00PM
I got my update just past midnight. Have this week off as a holiday and thank god I took the right week off. I don't see any problems with my update so far. All looks fine. Just wondering if so many people are trying to download if the Sony servers aren't taking a big hit. It's a Canadian and US holiday this week, so lots of people are off. Wish you all luck in your downloads.
Marek Hryc @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:48PM
I updated this morning before going to work. I hope it's gonna work when I get home, I just got MGS4 today!
