Rumor: Next Tony Hawk to have peripheral, not developed by Neversoft
The latest rumor to come from the pages of EGM lends further credence to one of last month's marketing leaks that Activision has gotten a little gung-ho with their plastic controllers. According to EGM's "skater spy," the next Tony Hawk game will feature a "new fancy plastic peripheral" (we're thinking something like the Wii Balance Board); for reference, the marketing leak called it "a new motion sensing board controller." Additionally, the game will supposedly not be developed by Neversoft, who at the moment have their hands full with Guitar Hero World Tour's peripherals. We have a hard time imagining Neversoft, who created the Tony Hawk series and has worked on all previous iterations, not having a part in the next version. We've sent our network of spies into action and will let you know what we come up with.

Last few Tony Hawk games disappointed me, and I loved the first 2 games and thought the next couple were okay.

Although the Tony Hawk franchise has gotten a little stale and in need of a fresh start, this sounds like a really bad idea

Did you have an equally hard time when Eidos took Tomb Raider from Core to have Crystal Dynamics develop it?

After the First THUG, they lost me... 3,4 and THUG was their peak IMO.

Lemme guess... it's a skateboard deck on a spring?

I liked the first 2. I haven't played the rest of them because the game just got wackier and wackier every time a new one comes out!!!

I can already tell i dont want this. Ever since skate, i could never go back to the TH franchise.
Jhongerkong @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:22PM
Cause if theres anything we sorely need, its more plastic crap to take up space.

This is the unnamed MMO that Blizzard is working on.

I must see the end game raid of that game.

I only player Project 8 and I didn't liked a bit. it was really broken, sometimes I crashed against a small object like an hydrant or something and my skater was thrown miles in the air resulting in a 1,000,000 injury.
First how he survived and where did he got 1M Dollars, if you have 1M why the f*ck are you skating? You could be driving a fancy car or something.

and who knew a "simulation" would cost more than the real thing?

I love me some Tony Hawk games, 4 is up there with my faves of all time, and I'm all for some innovation in this series. Can't wait to see how it turns out. My money is on trying to make it more like Skate. Oh, and I am the worlds best THPS4 player. Any takers? :P

Well I'd assume that the Wii version will be using the Balance Board, so I'd have to assume its a very similar peripheral for the other two systems. I'm getting a little sick of all the separate peripherals for each game though. There's a reason it wasn't done before... they take up too much space.
I mean I'm fine with the instruments for Rock Band, but now GH:WT is coming out and there will be a separate set of instruments for that, the balance board, Wii Wheel, etc etc. There needs to be one standardized set of things instruments or at least forced compatibility by the console makers (none of this Activision/Harmonix finger-pointing), and maybe we can stop having separate peripherals for every game. (I have no problem with the Wii Balance board being a standard peripheral for multiple games, for example, but if Activision releases something similar for just this game, well then it's ridiculous.)

It's a pandora's box. Now that individualized peripherals have become hot, the box isn't going to be closed
"Blame" can be laid at Konami, Harmonix, and Nintendo, i would think

While the THPS series is in desperate need of a new, preferably more realisitc, direction, I don't think this "peripheral" or the complete absence of Neversoft, who have been involved since day 1, are the solution. Going a gimmicky DDR/GH route is just going to make things worse and could ultimately serve to do nothing more than drive even more people away to competing titles.
Plus, assuming this is in fact a deck peripheral of some sort, since it is being made out of plastic, how the hell do they plan on making it universally compatible with all weight demographics? Perhaps the one for the U.S. markets will be made out of steel instead.
Given some of the challenges in previosu THPS titles, the fun part will be when people freak out, get frustrated, and end up focusing the controller.
