As we've already reported, SCEA has removed firmware 2.40, released early this morning, from its update servers. Users attempting to use the System Update feature from the PS3 XMB from firmware prior to 2.40 are now being told that their software is up to date.
This action follows a large number of reports on the official PlayStation message boards of the update adversely affecting users' systems. The most widely noted problem is systems simply failing to reach the XMB upon booting, instead getting stuck on a screen with only the familiar "wave" background displayed.
Some posters have reported that removing the PS3 hard disk, formatting it via a PC, then re-inserting it allows the PS3 to boot properly ... with the obvious drawback of losing everything – profiles, saves, DLC, etc. – that was on the drive.
Joystiq contacted SCEA for comment on the situation as was told by PR director Patrick Seybold that they are aware of the message thread and that they are "looking into it right now and will work with those customers directly to address any issues they may be experiencing." This comment came before the update was removed from Sony's servers. We're seeking further comment and will update as we receive it.
Update: SCEA has issued a formal statement via the official PlayStation blog confirming that firmware 2.40 has "temporarily" been taken offline until it can "isolate the problem" and "identify a solution."

Well the story and message board postings are fake. The original post was started at almost the exact moment the firmware update was released. If you look at the timestamp the post may have been written before the update was released through Sony's servers.
The post was created by a forum member who registered at the same time as the post was created. SO all in all complete BS. The RROD problem was and is real. This problem is faked by a couple people. Throughout the entire forum post there were only three people who claimed to have bricked consoles. 2 of them had new user accounts made over the past 2 days. Sony pulled the update as a precaution but it is sad that a BS post made them do it.
2.4 does not brick consoles. The story and PS forum post is fake, most likely posted by a paid Microsoft propaganda team.

The problem is Sony and Microsoft do not put anytime in quality control, they fix after the fact. then they use us to fix their problems. Shouldn't we get something for are time?

OK, so I have two questions. First is this update screwin up PS3,s or not? Second, just because I swear by Sony (PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, Sony high def 1080i tv etc.) & thiink XBOX blows does that mean I'm a "fanboy"? I've been reading comic books for like 15 years & always claimed I wasn't one.

SONY DID NOT TAKE THE UPDATE DOWN BECAUSE OF 1 FAKE POST..
lol i love how fanboys always have a defensive stance for sony on every issue, + a BS explanation...
THEY TOOK THE UPDATE DOWN BECAUSE IT WAS NOT READY AND WAS HAVING ISSUES ON SOME CONSOLES.
some of the people complaining on the official sony forums have been members for many years and have 1,000 posts, they are all not workers at Microsoft trying to make a fake claim...
