Square Enix countdown site opens, most likely Chrono Trigger DS
A new Square Enix countdown site has launched, which features only a clock and the Nintendo DS logo. Considering the URL is square-enix.co.jp/ctds, we're going to take a guess and say it's Chrono Trigger DS. It could be a remake, a sequel ... or something entirely different. Chrono Tetris, perhaps?
Screw that. Who are we kidding?
[Thanks to everyone that sent this in! And to Square Enix, for doing something right.]

God damn, everything is coming out for the DS, but its to be expected given its massive install base. No PSP love Square? : )
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:07AM
Where's my avatar, why'd it default to Mario?
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:12AM
Well... it just makes sense with the huge install base.
The Nintendo DS is definitely the system to have if you want RPG's.
4MyFriends @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:36AM
It's the same reason why the PS2 got most of the game, when the Xbox was a superior system much more capable. I keep reminding people that companies only care about the money, not about "making the best games ever"; If the PSP was doing as good as the DS in Japan in both hardware and software they'd be getting more love as well.
FOXHOUND @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:05AM
d00d... the PSP is getting DISSIDIA and a KH game. There's love, but on the side. "Like a friend with privilages" that you don't wanna be caught around your norm-chick with.
All stupid analogies aside, I'd love for *anything* CHRONO TRIGGER. VC, DS, Wii, PSP, PSN/XBLA, anything. :\
deaftly @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:36AM
PSP games don't sell, DS games do.

Anticrawl @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:01AM
Doesn't make sense. The original Chrono Cross sequal Chrono Break was intended to go to the handhelds and Chrono Trigger II was supposedly the console version. May have those backwards but I think not. Obviously they were "canceled." I sure hope they both make it back to the light.
4MyFriends @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:33AM
I agree, make the console one on the Wii, and include Wii-DS connectivity. Would be great.
wickedneoq @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:49AM

gibbonofdoom @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:58AM
I saw the headline. My jaw dropped. No words came out.
NoHitHair @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:02AM
Is this Square finally listening to their fanbase (other than the rabid FFVII posse) or giving in to their desire to milk every franchise they have?
Please let this be a remake or a sequel. ...with multiplayer.
Monkeydog @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:37AM
@Anticrawl
There has never been the slightest mention that a Chrono Trigger II would ever exist, nor was it even announced to what Chrono Break would be...or if it was even in development at all, it was just a name registered by Square.
So you really have no idea what you're talking about.
Also...seeing how games on the DS tend to be. I wonder if Square would be interested in making a Chrono game in the Radical Dreamers sense. That could be pretty cool. However I certainly hope this is not a game in a Radical Dreamers sense.
Anticrawl @ Jul 2nd 2008 5:29AM
Monkeydog, I'll find you your proof. I just haven't dug up the interviews. They were registered names and an interview followed after varies documents were filed for said game. The potential project was canned or postponed friend. All of the staff were speaking entusiasticly about how they've tossed around ideas for new games in the Chrono series.
Shogan @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:58AM
I'm gonna laugh if this is Clock Training DS.
Jared @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:09AM
MEH. I'm sick of all the best games going to handhelds.
milkman1042 @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:34AM
If they're the best games then they must be good so then why does it matter where they're going to/coming from?
4MyFriends @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:40AM
Consoles aren't the golden ticket this gen, handhelds are. Honestly, nothing like this should be a shock to anyone after Dragon Quest 9.
Totakeke @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:07AM
No doubt about it. A very popular gaming magazine just revealed that it's coming, as well.

Monkeydog @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:08AM
Diablo III and now Chrono Trigger?
Man.
I think I can become optimistic from now on.
I have been waiting for this for more than a decade now, thank god.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:22AM

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!
(I'm still wating for that Daikatana sequel :P )
Monkeydog @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:26AM
Yeah we do.
However we did get Megaman 9 this week too, didn't we?
Fuck yes to games I gave up on.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:31AM
And by the way... Megaman 9 is for WiiWare only.
ArsTechnica already updated the post about Megaman 9 coming to PSN and Live Arcade. Even Joystiq updated the thread.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:53AM
So Megaman 9 is for Wiiware only? :(
You know for Fernando in ancient times people used to kill the messengers of bad news, it was a good tradition that we left in the past. Come here let me show ya >:(

There is also another game: Tales of Hearts for the DS.

SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:10AM
this is great. Chrono Trigger is one of those games that is always on peoples lists of RPG's to play and i have never played it. well i played a couple minutes of it on an emulator but i never had time to really get into it. a portable version is the perfect solution. lets hope thats what it is, and a graphics update would be great too.
3cubed (4squared plus 2squared) @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:14AM
Same here. I finally get to see what all the excitement is about and being on the DS makes it better.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:30AM
Me neither,I heard Chrono is the Diablo for JRPG fans and comparing any game to Diablo are very big...oh who I'm kidding comparing Diablo to any game are some very f*cking serious and astronomical colossal words. The kind of stuff that you better are correct of STFU like 4ever.
I happen to have a PSone game titled Chrono Cross, I don’t know if it is related with the other games(The whole thing is in Japanese).
Ihavepants @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:32AM
Re: MrEsc.
No it isn't.
bm @ Jul 2nd 2008 4:06AM
Oh come on, Diablo was nice, but... you can't compare a hack-and-slasher with generic soulless characters and forgettable ambient music to something like Chrono Trigger.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:08AM
Wat?
hack-and-slasher-The best there is,except for you know Diablo II.
With generic soulless characters-You are talking about Chrono Trigger? Because none of the Characters in Diablo was generic, all of them had a nice ring to them so you either didn’t play it or you just are a damn troll.
Forgettable ambient music-Here is where the sh*t hits the fan.
Sir I don't know what game you were playing.Probably you got the address wrong and end playing some pirate game named "Devil" or something because Diablo is not what you just described.
The main characters were silent yeah but none of the dialogue was forgettable. The music just kicked ass, the ambient was pretty badass.
One thing is you like Chrono Trigger; other thing is just unleash bullshit around like that. Damn I hate trolls.
I’m going to play Chrono Trigger and if its doesn’t delivers the same amount of awesome as the first Diablo I’m going to find you and personally going to cut your testicles and skin your pets alive.
bm @ Jul 3rd 2008 8:21PM
LOL good luck with that!
Who's the fucking troll anyway, YOU're talking bullshit about a game you've never played! Idiot.
Most of Diablo's music was random forgettable ambient crap and you know it. What little music there was, anyway. CT has a huge sountrack with memorable, REAL music.
And, jesus christ, how can you NOT call the standard fucking fantasy fare classes in Diablo generic? Hell, the word "classes" says it all, they weren't even characters, if you know what that word means.
You can cry about jrpg stories all you want, Diablo is a painfully generic piece of fantasy bullshit. It can't even stand in the shadow of a real story like CT.
I don't know why I'm arguing, because from your posts I get the feeling you're like, 15 or something (hint: if you're actually an adult, that's a bad sign). And whenever you do play CT, you're going to try your best to hate it because OH NOES THE BAD MAN ON THE INTERNETS SAYS IT WAS BETTER THAN MY GAME. Because that's just who you are.
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:14AM
Remake or sequel... I'm happy either way.
Even though I already own the Super NES original (and borrowed the PS1 portmake from a friend), I will gladly buy this again. It's just that damn good.
I'm not even a fan of J-RPGs, but this is one I absolutely LOVE.
Allow me to express my love... in song!

SQEEEEEEEE!!!!!
Square, I realize you are doing this rather than make a proper VC release of the game simply to soak more dollars out of a fanbase that by and large has alreayd bought this game. And I realize that this is yet anothe rof your interminable remakes to keep the cash flowing before you destroy the FF series even more utterly than before with dumbed down gameplay and yet another unwarranted FF7 spinoff......
But goddamn it I want this game. Add some dialogue and story elements for Magus when he joins you and its a day one purchase.

You are aware that the fanboy army of the thousand empires will descend upon you and that their arrows will block down the sun (No you can’t fight in the shadow, sorry.) right?
If you don’t like the game, better don’t post since you are looking for a serious downvote and you are only going to get pissed (I meant angry not literally pissed unless some fanboys get outside of your house and throw you a bucket of…nevermind).
