BioShock being 'optimized' for PS3 by Digital Extremes
2K Games has announced a partnership with Dark Sector developer, Digital Extremes, to aid in the completion of the PlayStation 3 version of superb submerged shooter, BioShock. Digital Extremes is the fourth studio to join the project -- 2K Marin, 2K Australia and 2K Boston have already dove in -- and aims to give PS3 players a "fully optimized experience," complete with new features and content. And trophies, probably.
James Schmalz, CEO and founder of Digital Extremes, noted that the decision to work on the critically acclaimed project didn't even require a brain. "When 2K approached us to assist with development on BioShock for the PLAYSTATION 3 system, it was a no-brainer," he said. "You really can't ask for a more exciting, technically impressive world to work in than Rapture, and the incredible knowledge and talent between the 2K studios and our team at Digital Extremes is unprecedented." Apparently, when it launches this October, BioShock will make the PS3 "sing with Big Daddy goodness and Little Sister 'thank you's'."

Was Dark Sector a good game?
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:08PM
Yes, and underrated too.
jimmygotsmack @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:09PM
From what I heard, it was a hit or miss game.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:30PM
I only played the demo and some parts are hard and too dark (Damn you current gen graphics) but the Tron disc of doom was awesome.
I just wished the game was more colorful, even the Darkness allowed you too see things more clear.
When Dark Sector, Naruto: RoaN and The Simpson’s prices drop here I’ll buy all of them.Funny DMC4 price dropped very quickly here but Naruto is a still at the same price.
Cyro @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:34PM
Its not a bad game. Graphics were impressive and frame rate was solid. I only have two things against it. The story was kind of weak and The Melee was just downright stupid. It was totally useless.
I think it was a solid game, very underrated.

"Melee was just downright stupid. It was totally useless."
Really? It wasn't deep, but I found to be very powerful. When I'd get surrounded I'd just start hacking away with my glaive. Worked great.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:48PM
I played the demo. It was alright. Nothing special.
Tiptup300 @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:01PM
It's a technical beast (Flawless FPS, Jawdropping graphics) with mediocre gameplay.
Syn @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:06PM
And we were told this was a 360 exclusive... Well darn fellas, Add another one to the multiplatform list.
In anycase, this is a rental at best anyways. Doesn't matter what system.
Huey2k2 @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:09PM
Rental at best? Wow...
I don't know about you but I was more than happy with my purchase of Bioshock. Fantastic game.
arrrgh @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:25PM
Woooooo!!!
honestly does anyone still care about this game?
bioshock 2 on the horizon cmon get with the times
Syn @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:32PM
I base my purchases on games that have more then 5hrs of gameplay.
ThePerfectCompanion @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:34PM
Exactly arrgh
As for rental I sorta agree with that statement. I mean really after you've gotten all the cheevos what else is there to do? I played it thru 4 times...1st on the lower difficulties while trying to get as many basic achievements as possible.
2nd time I killed all the lil brats.
3rd time I played on a harder difficulty and I saved the lil angels...
And the 4th time I saved them and I focused on getting all the remaining achievements I had not gotten.
It really doesn't require more than a week or 2 worth of time. Once I had done everything I put it away and moved on.
Great game but in the long run it doesn't have a lasting replay value like some other games. Still though I'm glad its a part of my 360 library collection.
Obie @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:07PM
So another company is doing the porting? I am getting "Orange Box" flashbacks...
Nonhippyhippy @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:18PM
Digital Extremes are not EA, that must count for something..
Plus this isnt an outside job, if you read it properly it never said the entire job was being given to Digital Extremes. It seems they are merely helping the various 2K teams because of their experience with PS3 coding.
Cyro @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:21PM
lol!
Obie @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:22PM
We'll see, actually I already played the game a year ago. So I am hoping the PS3 crowd gets a decent port.
arrrgh @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:38PM
patchwork port pieced together spanning multiple studios?
Yep that definitely does NOT have PS3 coding nightmare written all over it.
How many studios can code properly for ps3 already? Now they want to throw a bunch into one port?
I remembered hearing a word to describe this kind of descision
Fail.
jimmygotsmack @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:08PM
4D GRAPHICS HERE WE COME!!!
Moffka @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:24PM
Optimizing, not making the game look better you dick.
Jokes old, never was funny anyways.
jimmygotsmack @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:00PM
Did I touch a nerve?
Making something look better would be consider Optimizing you silly little boy.
Old jokes are great, with reactions like that :).
Chris @ Jul 3rd 2008 7:47PM
It's already been stated that the graphics will look identical with very very few differences.
Marty @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:09PM
Wonder if this has anything to do with the delays Epic had when trying to get the Unreal 3 engine to work on the PS3 properly?
ThePerfectCompanion @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:09PM
Sad that the ps3 is getting this game but I doubt it will sell as well as it did on the 360...games gonna be over a year old and most people who were excited about it probably got it for PC if they were sony fanboys...
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:11PM
/CaptainObvious
jimmygotsmack @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:14PM
too true, but there are some people....
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/5/23/
Burritoclock @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:16PM
Why is it sad? I mean I love my xbox and all but jesus what is the big deal? I played it, last year... cool. Now anyone with just a PS3 can play a great game... sad.
This crap gets old, real old.
Peter Vazkey @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:14PM
Of course its probably going to look better. They had like a whole nother year to work on it.
jimmygotsmack @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:16PM
and now with the 4th dimension available.
Autopsy15 @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:37PM
Is that the only joke you know?
Jettic @ Jul 3rd 2008 6:39PM
Oh of course it is.. He is an idiot =]
BigKountry @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:16PM
Digital Extremes... put the GLAIVE in this game and I'll be sold... again!!!
Momo @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:32PM
Bioshock is seriously my favorite game. It deserves to be played by everyone.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:34PM
Is one of those games I don't get tired of beating.Like Megaman Maverick Hunter X.I have a save at the end of the game in hard to beat the boss again and again.
VoLiTioN @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:33PM
And by optimize, does that mean they plan to include Southpaw in the PS3 version?
Mr.ESC @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:32PM
If they launch a LE version with a Big Daddy figurine (again) I'm buying it again,I only got the Vanilla version.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:52PM
This is sounding less and less like a half-assed port. Good stuff.
LaughingTarget @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:57PM
AKA - It'll almost rival the PC in visuals.
Of course there'll be trophies. Transplanting the 360 achievements over is cake.
j.howlett @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:23PM
if there is a sizable section were i can play as the bouncer i'm in, if not i'll wait till its cheap again. i would just love that drill
killr0y @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:32PM
"AKA - It'll almost rival the PC in visuals."
The PS3 couldn't handle PC visuals from 2 years ago, hows it all of a sudden going to do it now?
The likely truth is that 2k wasn't going to waste their time & energy trying to get the game running on that pig of a PS3.
Its funny how the PS3 fanboys grasp on to words like 'optimize' and let their imaginations run wild, interpreting it as 'teh hidden powar of PS3 will be r3vealed!'
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:49PM
The term "PC visuals" is stupid anyway. Most PCs out there can't match "PC visuals". I've played both the 360 version and PC version. The visuals are already very similar. You can run it as higher resolutions, but it looks pretty much the same.
browntown @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:52PM
MS defence force?
browntown @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:54PM
Not gonna buy this, im gonna borrow it from a friend for the 360 (when i get one). Its good to see that ps3 owners will get to play this, but it shoulda launchd at the same times cuz now the sales will not be very good, since we got a bunch of other games to look forward to.
Kamran Iftikhar @ Jul 3rd 2008 4:38PM
Not interested. I played the PC version and I just couldn't the hype that surrounded this game. Good-to-average looking game. It played OK ... some sections were a bit scary but nothing that hasn't been seen or done before. IMHO.
Deric Lee @ Jul 3rd 2008 4:43PM
So it takes four studios to port games to PS3 now?
Wow
Mike @ Jul 3rd 2008 4:57PM
Whats with the pathetic Joyswiq quotes around optimised?
You lot really are are bunch of wankers.
forestofdeath @ Jul 3rd 2008 5:12PM
well, say goodbye to bioshock's originality. :(
ace @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:44PM
why would 2k look for others for the job? i thought 2k already have enough talent for the job, sound very fishy to me... no disrespect, but i don't think digital extremes is the answer
