Lest you have no idea what Bungie Day is, that's Monday, July 7 (7/7, get it?). Yes, starting on July 7, Halo 3's newest map Cold Storage will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace absolutely free. Not only that, but Microsoft will also be lowering the price of the Legendary Map Pack from 800 Microsoft Points to 600 Microsoft Points. The best part of all is that these prices will become the permanent prices of the content. In other words, Cold Storage and the Legendary Map Pack price drop aren't part of the limited time, one day only Bungie Day goodies that will be on Marketplace. Joy!
In celebration of Bungie Day and the release of Cold Storage, a special 48-hour free for all playlist is going up. Specific details are sparse, but Bungie's Luke Smith promises that players will be able to control "Rockets, Invis and Snipe." Mmmm ... sounds nice and spammy. Finally, "one last thing" about Cold Storage is set to drop some time today on Bungie.net. Keep your eyes glued to X3F for whatever that may be.
[Thanks, Skandil]

Haha, you think the maps don't cost anything to make.

i never said that. Assuming 2 people worked on a map, and it took roughly 100 hours to make (aprox time for a quality map) that would only net development at less then $40 000 for the 3 maps (basing off normal salaries). Consindering the game made like $500 million or something like that, is it too much to ask for some free additional maps?
Even if they absolutly didnt want to charge us money buy had to to recover costs, they could charge us 10 ms points for the map pack, and STILL gain back all their development costs for the maps.
Theres only one reason for additional maps not to be free, and thats pure 100% greed (for more money). True developers would give us free maps (like epic) who do it to keep their customers happy. Happy even jumped through hoops to make their GOW maps free when Microsoft was forcing them to charge $ for it. Bungie on the other hand, seems to enjjoy upgrading the engines on their lamborghinis at our expense.

It worked really well last year. It made me think Bungie Day only happens once in a century. 7/7/07

Great news! But hopefully the permanent 600 MS point price isn't a replacement for them eventually going free in the future.

It is. They have no plans to make them free. And rightly so. We've already had 3 (and soon to be 4) maps for free (eventually) - why should they chuck the best map pack at us for free as well?
It's not the best scenario but it's understandable. Hey, least they are giving away a free map, and reducing the price on Legendary and have already given you a whole map pack fore free later on so they are hardly heartless right?
And if someone comes in here and says they should "because Halo 3 is dead", I'll laugh. It's still more than alive and kicking :)

Don't kid yourself, they will be eventually free. Bungie is awesome like that. I bought them on release and don't regret it still.

Think of it like your buying 4 maps for 600 points :P.
If anyones interested there is a Bungie community initiative to break 7b kills in campaign by July 7th (Bungie day).
We have 118m campaign kills to get in four days if we want to make it. So go rack up some campaign kills.. :P

They will still be back when you get your new 360. :P

Thank god it is permanent. I would have had to kick Microsoft's ass. Sent in my third red ringed console yesterday. This one was less than half a year old. =\
