Yay, now you actually have a chance with Megan Fox...right. Not that it was terribly surprising, Hollywood relationships have the shelf-life of ice cream in the oven, and their publicists wouldn't be caught dead letting a commoner hang around those that stride upon Olympus.

Anyone can see Trophies are better, the 360 achievements have always been flawed, and PS 3 trophies don't have those stupid limitations.

There are limitations as for how many points/achievements developers can place per game...

As far as the trophies go, there must also be some kind of limitation, otherwise it would be utterly stupid

The limitations are what makes the system work you tool. If devs could make one trophy or achiement for every point scored then people would get an endless amount. WTF would be the fun in that.

Look for a less lame attack to make next time.

I think there are some limitations to achievements, but I think that ended around 2007, when developers realized they needed to put more effort into them. I think any 2K6 sports title was flawed, as you could get all the achievements in one game.

Any achievement that required you to be number 1 in the world was also heavily flawed as well. But, you rarely see those impossible achievements (except Chromehounds, of course.)

Why require trophies? If achievements proved anything its that people will play the shittiest games just to unlock achievements.

It would seem in the best self interest of the developers to put in trophies even thought they are not "required". Probably sell and extra 50k copies just to the trophy whores.

And whats wrong with that? Is it that bad that there are people out there that like Achievements ?

Personally I think that Achievements add value to a game.

Cyro, Shad just said the same you said, he just simply brought up the question as to why they HAVE to be required, which I also agree on.

They don't have to be required, hell, there have been studies that state that they do add value and so increase sales of the games. If the developer/publisher don't want to add them, then so be it, they already know what the pros and con are, why force them into doing something like this?

Personally I don't see trophies getting nearly as much traction since sony doesn't provide ANY api's to developers in the community. The xbox community is partly so vast because Microsoft opened the xbox live platform.

I think that Sony missed the boat on this one. Should have been there from the start. They had a year to see that the 360 achievements were popular.

It is going to be hard to execute this far in the game. But I guess the ps3 will be around until 2012.

Sony did not miss any Boat here.....So what if some of the older games don't have trophies, as long as all the new ones from here on do.

The ones loosing out will be those developers refusing to update their games to include trophies. Those people buying a PS3 for the first time who really want trophies will only buy the games that have them, that simple.

People said the same thing about rumble (Sony missed the boat) but guess what, they added it and some older games were updated some where not, but now all new games support it and everyone is happy.

Not including them in every game, virtual makes them pointless. The Gamerscore on the 360 is meant so you can gauge how good the player is based on their points, or how much they've unlocked in the games they've played. Without every game supporting it, it basically makes them little more than a novelty, it's like going to the Olympics, but only some of the events actually count :P

Also, yeah, it's a little sad to see Sony so blatently copy one of the 360's features, they could have at least come up with something similar, but new. Instead, they used basically exactly the same system.

I'm not trying to start a console war, or even take sides, Microsoft have done their fair share of ridiculous moves as well, but this is really low, by any standards.

I really hope MS do introduce a Home like system now, just to call it even :P

Uh, it isn't the same...the only thing that they have in common is that you have to do certain things to unlock them....

The Trophy system gives you a picture. The Gamer Score system gives you a number AND a picture. Cross platform games will have identical trophies as gamer score achievements. They are the same damned thing with a different name.

Sigh, go over this

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/ps3-s-trophy-system-explained/

"The really interesting aspects of trophies that we noted during our demo of firmware 2.40 are: a "level" system, which takes into account the number of Trophies you've earned and displays your progress via a percentage bar towards the next level; developers can customize the trophy achievement art to fit their games; and you earn a platinum trophy for unlocking every other Trophy in a game for ultimate bragging rights."

Not only that, but they will also be implemented as actual items for Home. Oh, and there has been some speculation as to what those "levels" will provide on Home...

So yah, Achievements are simpler but efficient, the trophies' interface is somewhat of a letdown, but then again, I wasn't expecting much as what I really wanted where the actual trophies to be implemented on Home

That's the same thing as Achievements. Condemned, a launch 360 game, has bronze, silver and gold levels for each of its achievements already (each giving more points) and there are already achievements for unlocking everything in some games.

Only when Home shows up will it actually be different. Trying to say the Trophy system is different usually means someone hasn't actually been on Live before.

@LT

Well, if you're going to use one game, Condemned, as an example of why the Trophy system isn't new then why don't we go back to the PS2 and the R&C games?

Quality isn't what the discussion is about. The basic concept is this trophy system isn't anything remotely new. It's just a feature long overdue being implemented and we have a company and fans making it out to be the best thing ever done. It isn't, it's status quo.

The fact that Joystiq even thought that developers would go back through the old catalog and add trophy support, really just shows how clueless they really are when it comes to gaming...

No wonder Kotaku gets the majority of my reading theser days, you lot are just pathetic clueless wankers.

The fact that Kotaku were one of the very first ones to post something about the problems with the 2.4 update and claim that it "caused a wide number of issues for those who updated to the new release" when...

- Not many people had the problem
- The problem didn't happen to those that DID update, it has been confirmed by Sony

The trophies aren't rectroactive, so even if they did add them you would have to play through the game again. Personally I don't care much for trophies or achievements, unless getting certain trophies/points are actually fun to do. I don't care about the ones that ask you to shoot every weapon at least 1000000 times and that kind of crap.

the whole concept is asinine. sony needs to do more than just copy the 360's 'achievements'.

first, they announced 'Home' after seeing 'Live' become what it is today and then 'Trophies' after seeing what a success 'achievements' have become. it's pretty embarrassing to watch Sony stumble after Microsoft with this "me too" bullsh*t.

i hope 'Home' meets everyone's expectations though, i really do.
