Video: GoldenEye 007 running on Wii 'Homebrew Channel'
The poster of the video states that he was able to get the game ROM working with the emulator used by the Virtual Console version of Sin & Punishment. He gives no details on how he managed the feat, mentioning only that the game works "for the most part" with occasional slowdown and a broken borked save system.
Hopefully Nintendo will see this video and, rather than simply order it pulled offline, realize just how much people really want a proper Virtual Console release of the game.

Wow, that video brings back memories.
I wonder if that game is really as good as I remember it.
Thatoneguy64 @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:59PM
Trust me, it's nowhere near as good.
FPS have evolved so far beyond what Goldeneye did it's not even funny.
Jhongerkong @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:14PM
What are you talking about?
Goldeneye + 4 people = greatest gaming experience ever
Josh @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:57PM
If you've never played it before, no, you probably wouldn't like it.
But if you were of the group that found it one of the best games of the 90s (along with Perfect Dark), then you'd probably still like it today (especially with the same friends you played it with 10 years ago).
Fatass of Rebuttalness @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:59PM
Half-Life + Sven Coop + 4 People >>> Goldeneye + 4 People
Goldeneye hasn't aged well at all. Neither has Half Life, but I can still play Half Life Deathmatch or Sven with a few friends for a couple of hours and have a blast, which is more than I can say for Goldeneye. In fact, a couple of days ago a few friends of mine sat down to play Goldeneye (I recently acquired some new N64 controllers) and we didn't play for thirty minutes before wanting to switch to 007:TWINE, which didn't gain the popularity of Goldeneye, but offers a much more polished, deeper multiplayer mode than Goldeneye.
Thatoneguy64 @ Jul 4th 2008 12:19AM
No, it isn't the best multiplayer experience ever.
Basically the only thing Goldeneye has going for it anymore is nostalgia.
Tiptup300 @ Jul 4th 2008 12:26AM
Josh, I always disliked GoldenEye, not sure why, but I always did. Duke Nukem 64 was my FPS of choice. Played that for hours.
t_m @ Jul 4th 2008 5:30AM
I played it a few weeks back and it still rocks.
Its not just the nostalgia factor, it has great pacing, great level design, and its just the right combination of simple+complex. I'd buy it on the Wii (but i'd prefer an updated WiiWare version with wiimote and internet multiplayer).
Chigurh @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:36PM
Weak sauce with no motion control.
Now go mod the PS3 so I can pirate games I don't deem to be worth $60. Like BF Bad Company and Burnout Paradise. I'd pay my local gas station/DVD bootleg store $25 for those games. $60 is just too much.
GenBanks @ Jul 4th 2008 5:29AM
Maybe we should run all of society that way.
You're trying to sell your car for more than I think it's worth. So I'm taking it.
Chigurh @ Jul 5th 2008 12:47AM
So you don't think EA would pirate your wallet if they had the chance?
LOs @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:37PM
Sadly, Rare being where it is now, this is likely to never happen unless big bucks are shelled out.
I miss this game though.
Microswirl (MKWii:1676- 4270-3674) @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:03PM
Nintendo is the publisher and therefore doesn't need Rare's consent or involvement to re-release the game. The problem has more to do with whoever now owns the James Bond license... so like you said, big bucks would need to be shelled out, but not to Rare or Microsoft.
LOs @ Jul 4th 2008 12:24AM
You're right I mixed it up with Microsoft's attempt to put it on Xbox live, which would have taken Nintendo's approval and the approval of the owner of the rights
fischju @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:38PM
It is called rom injection, has been around for months, and anybody can do it.
Monkeys Suck @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:53PM
The thing is, most people haven't been able to inject this game so it worked. They are still unable to inject many games because of issues like changing the sound (Pokemon Puzzle League), expansion pack (Perfect Dark), and others.
I just want an actual release. Once they release an official Super Smash Bros and Goldeneye, I will be happy.
Dannyboi68 @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:55PM
Yea, we've already done it with Zelda: Master Quest; injected in Sin & Punishment, and even non-licensed games like Zelda: Parallel Worlds; injected in Donkey Kong Country 2
Tiptup300 @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:40PM
Photoshopped, reflections and bird sounds are all wrong.
...Jan... @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:04PM
I'm a bit skeptical too. Is the Wiimote or even the Wii on? I can't tell if the Wiimote LED is on and we can't see the Wii power LED or sensor bar lights. It could just be a well synchronized video.
But yeah, come on Nintendo! Get Goldeneye on the VC.
Tiptup300 @ Jul 4th 2008 3:44AM
sigh, not even the "bird sounds" bit threw up the sarcasm flag?
Chase @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:50PM
Nintendo and Rare should just work out an agreement to get this game to us on XBLA and WiiWare. It's not like they wouldn't profit, for crepes' sake.
Tiptup300 @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:58PM
It's actually up to Microsoft and Nintendo working out a deal.
Chase @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:01PM
Oh, right. Whoops!
CJH @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:09PM
There is no doubt in my mind that it would be the best-selling XBLA game of all time. It would wipe the floor with whatever has the top spot currently. Probably the best-selling VC game as well. Neither of these companies can lose. I bet you it would earn Rare more money for the effort than that gimmicky Banjo game they're doing.
Tiptup300 @ Jul 4th 2008 12:27AM
I'm not sure if the word "gimmicky" would be a good one for the new Banjo. "Disheartening", that might be a good one. I loved the old banjos. I'm sure this new game will be great, but not Banjo & Kazooie great. If that makes sense?
Young_Nastyman @ Jul 4th 2008 4:02AM
tiptup: Good game, but just not the same
007craft @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:50PM
lol if your gonna pirate at least do it properly and get the content free off the internet. Only a complete tool buys copies on the street. As if bit torrent was some sort of advanced application you couldnt figure out.
Gamerschoice @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:20PM
Note to homebrew artists: PERFECT DARK WAS BETTER. PORT THAT PLEASE.
Josh @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:59PM
I agree that Perfect Dark was better. :)
Mr Khan @ Jul 4th 2008 12:22PM
Much harder, as nobody's sure if Nintendo's N64 VC emulator can even support the Expansion Pak, like it can't support the memory pak, since they haven't released any of the Expansion Pak compatible games
Plus Perfect Dark is something Rare has full rights to bring to XBLA anyway
CubeGuy @ Jul 4th 2008 8:11PM
IIRC, Cruisin' USA supported memory paks. There were a few tests to inject the Mario Kart ROM into it to see if it would work.
Gun Barrier (Gamer Tag) @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:40PM
doesnt the rom for this work in the n64 emulator for wii?
Just_a_guy @ Jul 4th 2008 12:17AM
this person should tell us all how he did it so that we can play it too.
lwnexgen @ Jul 4th 2008 12:59AM
Well, this is pretty sweet if some sort of system can be worked out to use Nintendo's N64 emulator. Emulators are notoriously hardware finicky, so anything developed by Nintendo (as they obviously know both the Wii and have more knowledge about the 64's architecture than anyone else) is going to be a ton better than anything the homebrew scene can port. An emulator capable of running N64 games on the Wii hardware with minimal slowdown is a very impressive feat.
hoagie @ Jul 4th 2008 2:46AM
Argh, let Goldeneye go already. I spent countless hours on it as well in my high school days. Good times. But that was...'97/'98?... Most new gamers today wouldn't appreciate it for what it is; and veteran gamers will start playing to reminisce... only to gradually find themselves asking, "How did I -ever- play this?".
Mischa @ Jul 4th 2008 7:01PM
No kidding! Are people really clamoring for this game? I have an N64, and at times will go back to goldeneye because people have such a huge nostalgia boner for it... Yeahhh not so good anymore...
What I would like however, are the maps from the game ported to another game like halo or call of duty or something. The facility map in the early versions of counter strike was straight up awesome.
harunyl @ Jul 4th 2008 3:12AM
kurutemizleme says very good game Half-Life + Sven Coop + 4 People >>> Goldeneye + 4 People
Mischa @ Jul 4th 2008 7:05PM
Despite you being voted down, I'm totally with you homie. Sven coop aged way better than goldeneye.
Come on, vote me down too, I can take it!! >:O
harunyl @ Jul 4th 2008 4:15AM

love the birds =)
Marc @ Jul 4th 2008 7:42PM
I think whoever said Nintendo are missing out bigtime in not re-releasing this (so far..) hit the nail on the head really. The fact the YouTube link has had 20,000 hits in 3 days shows how much interest it's generated.
GoldenEye 64 was like the Elvis of the gaming world - he came, he caused he stir, he left just as quick, and then all the imitations and wannabes that followed just never got the mix quite as perfect again. It looks a bit old now, but I don't care about that really, I played it first time and can look past that.
Rare indeed need to be honoured for the gaming demigods that they are. If they made a game as futuristic now as they achieved with GoldenEye in '97 we'd probably need alien technology to read it.
What better way for Nintendo to honour them than to let all their gaming hardcore that loved it first time round have another go?
Entropy007 @ Jul 6th 2008 8:04PM
What some of you are forgetting is that Goldeneye pioneered many design elements and general details in the FPS genre that simply didn't exist beforehand.
Rare is responsible for proper pock marks, smoke effects, debris flying off objects, mission objectives in general, visible damage on 3d models, proper muzzle flashes, realtime reloading, proper impact sound effects, once-popular detailed death animations & animation reactions to specific locations targeted, damage locations such as headshots, and quite likely more.
And to the shame of the game industry, some of these effects are NOT equalled or surpassed in some games to this day, 9 years or more later. Believe it or not.
Alex @ Jul 10th 2008 1:03PM
If Nintendo see this they won't care and try to stop the Homebrew channel completely, I love Nintendo games, but stop f*cking with us dammit!
