Handheld NES ... in an NES cartridge
Our first thought upon seeing this very cool hack was "that's awesome." Our second thought was "do you have to blow on it to make it work?"
BenHeck.com forum member "darkeru" created this inventive new take on a home made NES portable, which manages to squeeze all of the 8-bit dynamo's guts into a 4.1" by 5.5" space ... with a backlit LCD display. We just had a third thought: what happens when you connect it to this portable NES?

Awesome.
Will @ Jul 4th 2008 5:53AM
What if you put the cartridge inside a full sized NES? =O
Will @ Jul 4th 2008 8:56AM
Hey, I just realized, where's the select and start buttons?! How am I supposed to finish the Konami Code?!
Brian @ Jul 4th 2008 12:27PM
the select and start buttons are on the sides, two little tac swiches
pakkman781 @ Jul 4th 2008 5:56AM
I'm gonna guess that the universe explodes, which is unfortunate, since it would take both of these awesome mods with it...
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 4th 2008 6:35AM
Dammit! I was gonna make a "world explodes" joke...
Ah, well. +1 for you.
Anticrawl @ Jul 4th 2008 6:42AM
That's pretty freakin sweet.

"do you have to blow on it to make it work?"
Any younger readers who dont realise the true meaning of this sentence will get almost as much enjoyment from those of us who do. Not too young mind, else they'd be even more confounded.
Way to go with multi-faceted contextual humour Joystiq, intended or no. :D
BananaBoat @ Jul 4th 2008 7:22AM
You have to blow on it, then blow really hard inside the NES. If that doesn't work...well...you're screwed.
Ahhh those were the days...those were the days....
arrrgh @ Jul 4th 2008 11:38AM
if that doesnt work, USE GAME GENIE
i cant believe no one knows about this?
Throw the game in a game genie, run it through that and you will NEVER have to blow in it again. It works every time i tried. It was my failsafe method.
90% of the time, it works EVERY time ;)
seriously though...ive got em
i works
arrrgh @ Jul 4th 2008 11:38AM
it* works
Roto13 @ Jul 4th 2008 12:01PM
I have a Game Genie and that doesn't make it any easier.
juju187 @ Jul 4th 2008 12:33PM
Funny part was back then, in the user manual it said not to blow on the cart.
PojoMofo @ Jul 4th 2008 1:31PM
then you have to slam the cartridge holder down really hard, That is the only way my NES would play games for like 2 years before it finally crapped out.
BananaBoat @ Jul 4th 2008 2:46PM
Hold the phone...there was an NES game genie? I had the SNES game genie, but I never knew there was an NES version. Game genie was awesome, as was gameshark on the N64 (same company?). It's a bit sad that online play has basically destroyed the exploit market, since noone is going to sell a product that would get people banned, and them sued (well...modchips could do the same thing I guess, but there has never been a community of modders that do crap like turning on god mode in Ninja Gaiden II or something. Not that I have a modded 360 or PS3 or anything. Not risking my expensive PS3, or my legitimate gamerscore on XBL)
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 4th 2008 3:12PM
Game Genie was made by Galoob (same folks that made Micro Machines, woo!), GameShark was originally made by Interact*, but then sold the brand name to Mad Catz when they went bankrupt.
*NOTE: Actually, GameSharks were actually rebranded (Pro) Action Replays. At the time, Datel didn't have an American branch (just European), so Interact got the rights from them to distribute them in America under the GameShark name.
Roto13 @ Jul 4th 2008 6:53PM
"Game genie was awesome, as was gameshark on the N64 (same company?)."
The company that made Game Genie actually thought gaming was going to die out again after the SNES/Genesis era so they decided not to make another one. :P Bad idea.

"We just had a third thought: what happens when you connect it to this portable NES?"
It becomes a Wii of course.
Sorry, couldn't help it.
invaderalex @ Jul 4th 2008 10:31AM
No, it just become a super nintendo because as we all know 2 nes ducktaped together is just a super nintendo.
kataztrophy @ Jul 4th 2008 10:41AM
Can't wait for the day when someone makes a handheld Neo Geo out of a MVS cart.
DWells55 @ Jul 4th 2008 10:42AM
That. Is. Awesome.
Roto13 @ Jul 4th 2008 12:01PM
Where do you put the games? :P
mr nimblewick @ Jul 4th 2008 12:09PM
Mine would have to be made out of a gold Legend of Zelda cart.
JohnHeist @ Jul 4th 2008 7:37PM
Blow on it.
Then get the Q-Tips and rubbing alcohol.
Sean Fear @ Jul 5th 2008 12:25AM
I totally need one for my collection! I tore apart a Power Joy for it's NOAC but became totally overwhelmed and gave up. It is always cool to see someone other than Ben Heck make one of these.

Just think, one day you'll be able to squeeze a PS3, 360 or (today's standards) high end PC into something that big.
