Burnout Paradise 'Cagney' update for Xbox 360 delayed until July 14

Fans of Criterion's vehicular vehicleslaughter sim Burnout Paradise were supposed to receive the title's third major update this coming Thursday, codenamed "Cagney". The vaudevillian actor-turned-downloadable content will give Paradisians the opportunity to play through more than 70 events online in FreeBurn mode -- unfortunately, Paradisians of the Xbox 360 variety will have to wait a bit longer than their PS3 counterparts to enjoy the free update.
Unsurprisingly, the source of the hold-up is the rigorous Xbox Live certification process, which took longer than Criterion had expected. Their new release date for "Cagney" is the following Monday, July 14 -- though this delay won't affect PS3 owners. Nor will it affect DS owners, restaurant entrepreneurs, professional poker players, the current Dalai Lama, or the actual James Cagney, who is, in fact, deceased.

Aw well.. It's a free update so you can hardly complain about a few days delay.
Mat Schwartz @ Jul 5th 2008 7:57PM
Hold up, why are you being reasonable on the internet?!@
Tiptup300 @ Jul 6th 2008 2:15AM
This is the internet! We yell at people here!
deaftly @ Jul 6th 2008 5:10PM
LOUD NOISES
Tim The Enchanter @ Jul 7th 2008 9:42AM
Reason has no place here. The internet is a place of virtual fist shaking and senile story telling.
Paul (PSN: heypaul) @ Jul 7th 2008 2:55PM
In my day, we didn't have this "updating" or "patching" nonsense. We lived with programming bugs and liked it!
Jakka @ Jul 5th 2008 7:58PM
While I despise the game because a Sandbox Burnout isn't Burnout at all + there's no retry button or closed circuits, this game looks more and more interesting every day.
Maybe I'll finally check it out sometime.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 5th 2008 8:21PM
Seriously, the lack of retry isn't an issue until you're past your A license and about halfway to your Criterion license. That's over 20 hours into the game. Lack of retry is just not worth getting excited about.
I do miss crash mode though
ryan @ Jul 5th 2008 8:25PM
so you haven't even played it?!?!! how can you be so against something you haven't even tried?
Noshino @ Jul 5th 2008 8:34PM
"how can you be so against something you haven't even tried?"
Welcome to Joystiq
Jakka @ Jul 6th 2008 6:53AM
lol @ Noshino
Yes I've played the demo and I really disliked it. When playing a high-speed crasher, all I want to do is crash at high speeds not thinking if I'm going the right way or lose because I took a wrong turn just before the finish line.
I'll check it out eventually since it's a Burnout game but the lack of pre-mapped races really killed this game for me.Screw the retry button, I just want the good old racing back.
Jakka @ Jul 6th 2008 6:54AM
Just found this and it pretty much describes all my feelings towards this game:
Need for Unlimited: Paradise Wanted
Alex @ Jul 6th 2008 2:07PM
But you CAN retry!
Just stop in the middle of the road for a bit to end the current event. Then just go back to the traffic lights and start again.

It's possible Cagney on PS3 depends on Firmware 2.40 (because of the custom soundtracks feature) and unless Sony gets 2.40 back out there soon, Cagney could be delayed on PS3 also.
Paulmichael @ Jul 6th 2008 8:35AM
Actually, since they have been working on bringing custom soundtracks to the game for a while, I think it might be using the old version of the feature, where you manage what you are listening to in-game versus via the XMB. But if it's the other way around, then all the better...For the ones who got the 2.4 update in time that is!
pavs @ Jul 5th 2008 8:33PM
Woah, PS3 gets something before 360... and without paying crap load of money!?!?!?!?
This story should be on NY Times front page!!!
Cutty @ Jul 5th 2008 8:28PM
DelayStation strikes again...
Wait, what?
j.howlett @ Jul 5th 2008 8:52PM
this game moved higher on my list of games to get after getting tired of hearing niko scream like a bitch after flying through the windshield only to land 5 feet from the crash with minimal damage and a slightly dented car. these updates only sweeten the deal.
Virtuous @ Jul 5th 2008 9:18PM
Virtually everything EA touches winds up delayed.
Rask @ Jul 5th 2008 9:24PM
Well at least MS's rigorous certification testing prevents clusterfucks like 2.40 has become...
browntown @ Jul 5th 2008 10:20PM
Ya, MS has SONY beat in that department

2.4 works like a charm for me, too bad no one else on my friends list has it.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 5th 2008 11:44PM
You have a short memory.
http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/01/xbox-360-update-bricking-consoles/
2.40 isn't much of a clusterfuck, they pulled it pretty quickly, so to those who don't have it yet, it's just a bit of a delay, not some huge disaster. I am glad that it didn't affect me though.
lordwindowlicker @ Jul 6th 2008 3:18AM
Whenever a large update such as 2.4 happens, you ALWAYS have a chance that portions of it will have problems. I downloaded it without issue.
Please grow up.
J.Goodwin @ Jul 5th 2008 9:54PM
Yes, we're fully aware that Sony does not have a procedure for reviewing free updates:

why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 5th 2008 11:49PM
You are aware that the last update for Burnout:Paradise for 360 was recalled after a few days and took a few more weeks to come out on 360.
http://xbox360.qj.net/Bogart-patch-for-Burnout-Paradise-Xbox-360-version-recalled/pg/49/aid/118795
It's ridiculous the amount of petty mudslinging on here from people in glass houses.
Software testing isn't an exact science. If you have 100 testers test it for 100 hours, you have 10,000 hours of testing. Then you release it to 1,000,000 customers and in a single hour, it's been used 100x as long as you had to test it. Often, you're gonna find some problems on wide release.
hotnutz @ Jul 6th 2008 10:22AM
Ahh it appears that some people prefer to have short memories. Probably the same people who will be saying the Iraq war was a good thing in about 5 years from now. Sony and MS have both screwed up in the past and they will both do so in the future - plain and simple. To think or state otherwise only make you look stupid (aimed at Rask and Goodwin here)
J.Goodwin @ Jul 6th 2008 12:45PM
Yeah, but if I didn't have a short memory I'd have to dredge up the painful recollection of my 360 being bricked by the fall update a while back.
And then the 360 that I bought brand new in box from a store to replace it being bricked by that same update.
That was unpleasant.
Some people have no sense of humor.
DustoMan @ Jul 5th 2008 11:07PM
How can it be delayed when there was never a date in the first place. They only mentioned a July 10th date for the PS3 and said nothing about the Xbox.
macgyver @ Jul 6th 2008 2:48AM
no, originally they said the "Cagney update" was coming july 10th across both platforms. it was always dated as a time for the actual update to come out, never for a specific platform to receive it exclusively.

Lord Bowser @ Jul 6th 2008 6:45AM
What's the DS got to do with this, Griffin?
Tim The Enchanter @ Jul 7th 2008 10:05AM
the joke there is that the ds will not be affected, just like the ps3 version won't be.
juju187 @ Jul 6th 2008 9:35AM
im waiting for the lacey update, she was hotter
west43rd @ Jul 6th 2008 10:35AM
I think people who don't like this title still are assuming it is a race game, when it's really not. This is a destructible-environment sandbox game that happens to use vehicles. Most of the game is spent finding discoverables, unlocking items and finding cheat routes. It's really an RPG for cars that happens to have some race mini-games. In fact, the most fun I've had online with this game is when a group decides to have an impromptu demolition derby and suddenly I started earning rivalry points. It's super fun, but I can see how people who love racing games hate it.
juju187 @ Jul 6th 2008 11:39AM
ill call it an rpg when i can buy parts for the car
Coluthard @ Jul 6th 2008 2:42PM
So in summary: When it's a PS3 updated delayed, it's because Sony is slow, and don't care about it's users. When it's 360, it's because their process is more rigorous..
You lot a REALLY pathetic...
Dan @ Jul 10th 2008 3:08PM
This article is INCORECT and MISLEADING. The delay was not caused by the so called Live rigerous certification process...Right on the criterion website it plainly states that:
"The 3rd and most ambitious FREE software update for Burnout Paradise will arrive later than expected for Xbox 360 players.
We've picked up some additional bugs in our final test phase for the 360 version of Cagney and will delay until these issues are resolved."
Hmmm is Joystiq a little biased and showing a bit of 360 fanboyism?
