Mercenaries 2 developer walkthrough previews different 'approaches'
19
Those who enjoyed the economics-meets-explosions gameplay of Pandemic Studios' Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction will no doubt get a kick out of the latest trailer for the title's upcoming sequel. The three ExOps personalities we came to know and love in the first Mercs are making a comeback, and in the above video, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames lead designer Scott Warner gives us a sneak peek at how these well-trained operatives, you know, operate.
The gameplay looks solid, but for those of us too busy to watch a five-minute video on a Saturday afternoon, we'll briefly break it down using A-Team archetypes: Jennifer Mui is Templeton "Faceman" Peck, Mattias Nilsson is "Howling Mad" Murdock, and Christopher Jacobs is an amalgam of John "Hannibal" Smith and B.A. Baracus -- only he doesn't pity fools. He hastily shuffles them off this mortal coil using their own grenades.

Didn't care for the first game. But this one is looking good. =)

Loved the first Mercenaries, playing the factions against each other was pretty cool. This one is looking pretty good so far, though I wish they had chosen a different theatre. Already played South American Jungle to death with Just Cause... Between this and JC2 I hope no developer ever revisits it (until Guerilla Warfare II gets licensed out by SNKP of course... We need more games where you can play as Ernesto Guevara and Fidel Castro!).

Glad to see this is looking great. I was a huge fan of the first one and I didn't really expect much when I bought it since I never heard of it, but it was a pretty fun game.

I can tell I'm getting older because games like this just don't interest me anymore.
With that said, it definitely looks like a great game. Co-op could be really fun.

Models and textures could use some work but those effects are pretty nice. I'm a little concerned about the semi-destructible environments though, after playing BF: Bad Company for the past few days. Not being able to blow holes in walls is pretty irritating once you've gotten used to it.

Why do you need to blow holes in walls when you can just take the whole building down?

The game looks really fun and the graphics look good as well. It sort of reminds me of the underrated game called Crackdown on the 360.

Crackdown was the best. And I say it still is the champion when it comes to best valued DLC ever on xbox LIVE.
If only they were going to continue it =(

I liked the first Mercs game, but the 'three styles of play' was pretty thin then, and doesn't seem any better now. I mean, all three mercs can hijack tanks, fire RPGs over their shoulders, use sniper rifles (and probably custom vehicles). So what's the actual 'difference' here?
i'm sure it will be fun, but calling a sniper rifle the 'stealth' approach is somewhat shallow…

Sweet.
Think of how cool it'd be to co-op as Tactical and Overkill, or Tactical and the stealth chick.

Wow.. None of those were stealthy or tactical, they were ALL overkill.
When I think stealth, I don't think helicopters, I think Snake and Altair. When I think tactical, I think Navy seals or Socom.
I honestly do not see much of a reason for the separate "styles" when the objective is pretty much always 'kill everyone and blow everything up'.
