Brawl on the go with homebrew Super Smash Bros. Rumble
Nineteen-year-old German homebrew programmer "Fuzzy" recently revealed his latest project for Nintendo's dual-screened handheld; a portable port of Nintendo's franchise mash-up brawler, titled Super Smash Bros. Rumble. The above shakycam video reveals the early fruits of his labor -- so far, only three levels and one character (Mario) are available. It obviously needs a massive amount of work, particularly in the character design and animation departments, but it's a wicked idea. We hope that Fuzzy will continue working on this inspired project, provided that Ninty's legal juggernauts abide.

Whenever I see homebrew stuff like this I am always astounded by how much work someone can put into something that so few will ever see. It's a real artist's drive.
phooky @ Jul 7th 2008 1:39AM
Yeah, but they are definitely trying to reach as large an audience as possible, and having a more polished game will not hurt that.
Hell, we've all seen this video.

I wonder how this guy would feel if they announced an official smash brothers for the ds at E3 next week?
ugg.tryptophan @ Jul 8th 2008 9:57PM
proud?
Kasey Johnson @ Jul 6th 2008 2:20PM
I've never understood why Nintendo hasn't made at least a port of the N64 Smash Brothers if not a brand new one made specifically for DS.
Dopple Boppler @ Jul 6th 2008 2:54PM
Try playing Brawl with the Wiimote; Smash Bros. without an analog stick is a lot poopier than one would think.
Kasey Johnson @ Jul 6th 2008 3:00PM
Fair enough good sir, I hadn't really thought about that.
Charlie_Six @ Jul 6th 2008 3:07PM
According to the Surfer Girl Loves Star Wars blog, Nintendo did have a prototype Smash Brothers for the DS, but test reactions to it were "lukewarm," so the game was scrapped.
Howard-the-Duck @ Jul 6th 2008 4:25PM
I only play Brawl with the remote sideways. It's definitely not for everyone, but I love it.
CJLopez @ Jul 7th 2008 8:32PM
Only the great master can master this kind of gameplay.
I heard it was difficult, I heard it was the smash less kind of control, so I made it my first priority to master it.
I may lose against my friend most of the time, but when I switch to a stick control scheme, I mop the house with their ass!!!!

Pretty cool...Did anyone else think the Solo Player icon looked like it was trying to hula-hoop in wii fit?
zeldazeppelin @ Jul 6th 2008 2:38PM
man i agree with all of you man that why i have respect for there guys except the ones that pirate
David @ Jul 6th 2008 2:50PM
Like most of these projects, it'll get so far and then nintendo will just bring in the lawyers.
Mr Khan @ Jul 6th 2008 2:52PM
Looks good so far, though the animations are a bit wonky, they work well enough for sprites
If they remade Smash Bros for the DS, though, it would look better than the original, since the original was actually a low-budget game that Nintendo was just throwing out to sell on the characters backs. HAL Labs just happened to make a brilliant game in the process

I'm a hobbyist game developer for the PC, and if I had a dime for all the ssb, mario, sonic clones that I've seen people make, I'd be a rich man. But yeah, to get a game going for the DS like this is interesting.
Daniel from Germany @ Jul 6th 2008 3:40PM
it looks dutch not german...
interesting run away AI :)
Mic2000 @ Jul 6th 2008 3:41PM
It is dutch, i'm dutch and his loading screens were dutch titled. But that could still make the artist german if thats so...

I'd buy an official DS SSB!
The controls would work well, and if the game fixed the online issues and had voice chat...i'd even pay $50 for it.
12345 @ Jul 6th 2008 3:52PM
My respect and apreciation for that man,he did an amazing job with that game but honestly it looks kinda lame.
DS SSB is something that we all want, sure the controls wouldnt be perfect but they can still work(ive played SSB emulated on pc with keyboard, its worse than control but still OK).
And about online,go see SSBB and how pathetic that online is we know nintendo sucks for online ,they ruined a game that could have been awsome .
Chris Are @ Jul 6th 2008 4:18PM
I really wish I had the patience to do this kind of stuff. Very respectable. Good jorb buddy.
Deprincer @ Jul 6th 2008 4:59PM
I think he's dutch because the URL's extension had '.nl' at the end and not '.de'
Anyway, that looks pretty cool but has a long way to go. Not sure if I'm feelin' the 2D sprites.
Superstar90 @ Jul 6th 2008 6:39PM
Looks incredible, he should make it his new priority to get the collision detection and the sprite animations working better. But great effort!
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 6th 2008 10:47PM
It's a nice attempt, but I don't think it'll go far. Fighting games are pretty complex in engine development (regardless of how "simple" you may think the game is), which requires a lot of dedicated manpower and hours.
Oh, and there's all the art, too.
Charlie_Six @ Jul 6th 2008 11:43PM
I wish the 360 and PS3 would get Smash Brothers-like games.
vulgardaclown @ Jul 7th 2008 1:20PM
the 360 does, small arms on XBLA
CJLopez @ Jul 7th 2008 8:34PM
Expect a sequel of D.O.N. for the PS3, titled D.O.N.B., personally, i think B.O.N.D. would be better
Then again, don't expect it to reach state sides
Charlie_Six @ Jul 7th 2008 10:57PM
Woah I never heard of Battle Stadium DON until you mentioned it. Definitely gonna try the PS2 one.
Dakota @ Jul 7th 2008 10:39AM
I play the original SSB on my PSP with an n64 emulator.. doesnt have sound though. id love to see it released for DS
