Mega Man 9 first footage revealed
We know that Mega Man 9 is all-new and stuff, but after seeing a quick video of its gameplay (found after the break), we're compelled to dig up our copy of Mega Man Anniversary Collection for a nostalgia fix this evening.
GoNintendo discovered the first footage, which definitely has the look and sound of a classic Mega Man game from the '80s (minus slowdown and flicker). Details on the Blue Bomber's return are slowly starting to emerge, but we're hoping to learn a lot more about this WiiWare title soon.

Wow, they weren't kidding about using "retro" graphics.

So is this still just going to be on Wiiware? I'm still only buying it if a special edition is released on a NES cartridge, but it seems like just releasing on Wiiware is going to miss a lot of people. Is there any kind of a statistic of the number of Wii owners that have actually taken their systems online and bought a Wiiware game?
Co @ Jul 7th 2008 12:45PM
Just stop it. Tetering on the boundries of a flame war, you are.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 7th 2008 12:49PM
I own a Wii you idiot. If you think all the soccer moms and such that have been making the Wii constantly sold out are going to pick up this game off of Wiiware, which even you can admit they probably don't even know exists, then I don't know what else to tell you.
Sturat @ Jul 7th 2008 12:53PM
Yeah, I really hope they release this on NES or Famicom, so I'm glad the video doesn't show anything that looks like it couldn't be done on NES.
DangerMouse @ Jul 7th 2008 1:00PM
Does Nintendo even have the ability to manufacture NES games still anyway? I would imagine their machines haven't even been operative for over 10 years now.
arrrgh @ Jul 7th 2008 1:01PM
they wont release an nes cart. It makes NO sense for them to do so. would it be cool? yeah. Still doesnt make a fuck of sense.
What's wrong with wii ware? how are they going to miss people? this is a nintendo game, back on a nintendo console. What the fuck is the problem here? oh yeah. there is none.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 7th 2008 1:05PM
As far as manufactoring NES games, there is a website that makes new homebrew NES games on cartridges, so if they can I'm sure Nintendo can somehow.
The problem with only releasing this on Wiiware is that the audience for Wii and the audience for Megaman are no where near the same. Wii targets the casual gamer, this is common fact that Nintendo has even stated themselves. Who exactly do you think an 8bit Megaman game targets? Soccer moms? Wii Sportsters? I don't know how anyone can honestly say that Wiiware will reach more of a target audience then XBL or PSN would.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 7th 2008 1:06PM
According to Nintendo, 5 millions Wii's are online in USA. That's something like 50% of Wii userbase here un USA.
Let me find the link...
DangerMouse @ Jul 7th 2008 1:11PM
How can Mega Man compete with SPOGS anyhow?
baby sea tuna @ Jul 7th 2008 1:14PM
Or My Pokemon Ranch, for that matter...
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 7th 2008 1:14PM
Basically, Super Mario Bros. on Virtual Console has sold 600,000 here in USA. Nintendo stated that they sold the game to 10% of Wii's that are online.
CTC
We all know that the Wii is a casual system. But, there are 29 million Wii already sold.
Do you think that only 100,000 are from hardcore gamers? Heck no... at least 30% of Wii userbase is hardcore gamer and Nintendo games fan. Thats about 9 or 10 million.
Or are you going to tell me that only 1% is hardcore?
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 7th 2008 1:14PM
Also on a side note, does anyone know if Major League Eating came out on Wiiware yet? I was looking around and it said it was out on May 12, but I couldn't find it anywhere in the store. After seeing the hot dog eating contest on July 4th my uncle and I had to play the game.
cjshrader @ Jul 7th 2008 1:14PM
As cool as it sounds, and don't take me as an expert or anything, I doubt this game was programmed using the same coding language that created the original Mega Man games. Modern programming languages could put a game like this out in 25% of the time it took to probably make Mega Man 1.
Once again, I'm not an expert and am just guessing, but along those same lines it seems to me that the NES is expecting the game to be written in the same code, so a cartridge with this game on it wouldn't possible work. Certainly they could port it, but that's additional work.
arrrgh @ Jul 7th 2008 1:16PM
ctc im not sure how much "manufactoring" nintendo does these days
As for the wii sales.... Why dont you ask nintendo how well VC is doing? Tons of NES games on there.
BUT WAITTT!!! THE WII AUDIENCE IS DIFFERENT FROM THE NES AUDIENCE!! So obviously no one would be buying NES titles then right? They might as well cancel the wii i'm afraid. It's all downhill from here. Go play your playlandstation of fun!
Monkeys Suck @ Jul 7th 2008 1:19PM
It's been confirmed for PSN and XBLA.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 7th 2008 1:22PM
Okay, so if half of the Wii's have been online like you said above and Mario Bros. sold to 10% of half the Wii's, then that is only 5% of Wiis. Do you really think Mega Man will sell more then the original Mario Bros.?
Also, where are you coming up with this "at least 30% are hardcore gamers" stuff? I think it would be fair to say that a hardcore wii gamer would own Brawl and Galaxy. Neither of those have broke 7 million sales so that disproves your 30% hardcore thing, plus I doubt that only hardcore gamers bought those 2 games since they have Mario on the box. I'm not going to say it's only 1%, but I am going to say it's nowhere near 30%.
Markez (MKWii 4339-2878-5120) @ Jul 7th 2008 1:26PM
Releasing this on NES is a stupid and lame idea, sorry.
Saying you'll ONLY buy it on NES is stupid and lame, sorry.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 7th 2008 1:27PM
CTC
Mario Galaxy has sold 6.5 million so far. And SSBB has sold 6 million, and SSBB was released in EU last week.
Besides, not ever hardcore is going to buy the game. By your logic, MGS4 should have sold 12 million, or Halo 3 should have sold 18 million.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 7th 2008 1:27PM
"BUT WAITTT!!! THE WII AUDIENCE IS DIFFERENT FROM THE NES AUDIENCE!! So obviously no one would be buying NES titles then right?"
Yes, I'm glad you understand. Like Fernando said, Mario Bros. only sold 600,000 to 30 million+ Wii owners. I'm not great at math in the morning, but I believe that is only 1 in every 50 wiis compared to a 1 to 1 ratio for the NES. You are completely right when you say the Wii audience is completely different from the NES audience.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 7th 2008 1:29PM
"Besides, not ever hardcore is going to buy the game."
Yes, but I'm sure the amount of casual gamers that will buy something because Mario is on the box makes up for that, just look at Mario and Sonic Olympics.
arrrgh @ Jul 7th 2008 1:33PM
how many copies of mario 1 do you think they shouldve sold?
600k aint bad for a game that cost nothing to reproduce and practically nothing to make back in the day.
Your logic is fundamentally flawed.
thanks for coming out though!
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 7th 2008 1:35PM
CTC
600,000 copies in USA alone, for a game that almost everyone has in the PC or any other media is very good.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 7th 2008 1:37PM
"600k aint bad for a game that cost nothing to reproduce and practically nothing to make back in the day."
Kind of like how Mega Man 9 will cost hardly anything to make right? Either way, Capcom is shooting themselves in the foot by not releasing this on other consoles. A limited NES cartridge would be amazing, I know it won't happen, but it would be nice. I'll probably pick this up on my Wii if it's under $10, but not for anything over that.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 7th 2008 1:45PM
CTC
It's going to be $10 or less, probably. The most expensive game is the Final Fantasy title, at $15. But we are talking about Square... they always charge $5 extra dlls in the DS games.
arrrgh @ Jul 7th 2008 1:46PM
did anyone actually say that it wasnt being released on any other consoles?
or is this just more of the ctc logic train stumbling along
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 7th 2008 1:52PM

Capcom stated that is WiiWare only. Chek the Joystiq and ArsTechnica threads. They are updated now:

Try looking at the tags for the story arggg or at the related stories...It's really not to hard...or is that just how the arggg logic works?
Yourself @ Jul 7th 2008 3:12PM
I like that all of a sudden the Wii and Mega Man don't have any audience in common. I assume you mean the Mega Man series is only for hardcore gamers, which seems to imply some bizarre and daft elitism. I'm pretty sure if you asked me what my favorite game was when I was 5, I would've said Mega Man 4. Most of us around here grew up playing NES, and games like Mega Man, so what's to stop a new generation from doing the same thing?
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 7th 2008 3:17PM
Read your comment again yourself, you just proved my point. We grew up playing NES, the majority of the people buying Wii's did not.

arrrgh @ Jul 7th 2008 4:07PM
thanks ctc, but since that was a late breaking update on that Ars site and that JUST BEFORE that, it was said to be on xbla and psn. Sorry I was a little bit late reading that site.
The point is that no matter HOW much sand you cram into your vagina, the old mega man games will still be amazing. And this title will still be sold on wii ware.
I'm so sorry that the devs agree with me and the other sane ppl on this board in that a gfx update was NOT NECESSARY. Why don't you go play megaman X series? or the zero series? or the countless hundreds of other megaman games which got a GFX boost. how about they do it in 3d? ??? yeah that worked out GREAT for the series.
Dude just because you have an opinion, it doesnt make you coherent.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 7th 2008 4:14PM
Well... you are right on that arrrgh.
Megaman is definitely of my favorites series ever... those are the games I used to play when I was a kid. I'm very happy with the decition to make this game in 8 bit.
Ninja_Nun @ Jul 7th 2008 4:27PM
Of course they COULD put it on NES. They wont but im sure they could, hell even after all this time im sure all the machines need is a good blow and theyll be good as new
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 7th 2008 5:01PM
What are you saying sorry to me for? If you had actually read any of these comments you would see that I have a Wii and that I will get it if it's $10. Maybe you should go apolagize to Capcom for losing the chance to make more money? Also please show me where I said that 8bit graphics were a bad thing, all I've said is that the Wii's target audience and this games target audience are no where near the same. This game is targeting fans of the original mega mans, the Wii is targeting casual gamers and getting people into gaming.
arrrgh @ Jul 7th 2008 6:28PM
hahahah dude you're drowning.
but go ahead backpedal. It looks good on you
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 7th 2008 6:32PM
If you're going to claim I'm backpedaling then at least back it up with something, otherwise you just look pathetic.
Nicholas Sulikowski @ Jul 7th 2008 7:56PM
CTC that is a terrible idea. Why in the world would Nintendo release a new cartridge for a system they don't make anymore? And why in the world would they depend on an NES made by another company to sell said game? There is no way in the world Nintendo, let alone any company would do that, when they can just as easily upload onto a downloadable service, making it accessible to anyone, not just those that have an old NES or own the new design. Not to mention that making it for said system would be in turn supporting an unofficial, unlicensed product, which you just don't do. It's not a question of whether they can make a new NES cart, it's whether it makes sense. You're not gonna reach that many gamers by using a 20 year old system. You either put it on WiiWare, or maybe you release it as a GBA game like the line of NES ports they once had.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 8th 2008 12:40AM
Wow...I think we can all agree that nic here has no idea what we've been talking about.

If I had a wii, I'd be extremely excited at this clip.
That music kicks ass
Sturat @ Jul 7th 2008 12:53PM
I think it's a bit odd that they're using sounds from Mega Man 2 instead of the newer games, but everyone will love the music in these clips!
arrrgh @ Jul 7th 2008 1:05PM
i dont. the newer games paled in comparison to the older ones.
Co @ Jul 7th 2008 12:43PM
This is freakin awesome.
I hope this spawns other games to follow this path. Then all us old folks can tell the young kids that never grew up with these games and this era to go shove it when they all start complaining about it.

amen dude. back when games DIDNT need patches when released
