Dual-layer Blu-ray discs are so 2006. The new hotness is Pioneer's just-developed, 16-layer Blu-ray disc (pictured above) with a whopping 400GB of writable storage space. For reference, that disc could hold roughly eight copies of Metal Gear Solid 4, 187 copies of Final Fantasy VII, or 1.25 million copies of the original Super Mario Bros.
The new discs require a special "wide-range spherical aberration compensator and light-receiving element" to detect the weaker laser signal, so don't plan on sticking one of these data-bloated monstrosities into your existing PS3. That said, the next generation of game consoles could support this new disc system, which is fully backward-compatible with existing Blu-ray discs. Of course, by the next generation, game systems might not be using optical discs at all, so who knows what the future will hold.

Hmm i'm not sure if it's me or not but i think you have got it wrong Joystiq this isn't a Blue Ray disc at all.
The only reference to Blu-Ray is where they say "for the first time in the world*1. Its per-layer capacity is 25 gigabytes, which is the same as that of a Blu-ray Disc "
So i think you have got it wrong and it is just an optical dvd disc that has the ability to be compatible with Blu-Ray. So better change it my friend :)

I can hear it now. "Just think how big and awesome the games on PS4 will be with this." Sure they will, sure they will. This site called this the "new hotness"? I wasn't under the impression regular Blu Ray was ever even the old hotness.

This is dumb I mean who's gonna buy this I barely see anyone buy Blu Ray unless its a PS3 game. This is worthless no ones ever gonna buy this rather they made a triple layer.

The original Super Mario Brothers is 40,976 bytes, so one of these discs should be able to hold 9,761,811 copies.
Geez, get it right. It's FAR more appealing now!

And about 90% of that disk would be used for repeat data because of the even slower read speed, and fantards will claim MGS6 would have to be on at least 50 lame old-timey regular blu-ray disks if the bluray-supported Xbox1080 were to get the game.

Even if the PS3 could use these, it would take Sony 3 more years to enable the firmware without destroying peoples' machines.

MGS4 is only 30gb so it can hold more than 8 copies. :P
PS3 can only read single and dual layer blu ray anyway right?

The funniest part about all this is that people are talking like this has even the smallest chance of ever hitting retail and being used by the masses.
Newsflash people, you will never get your hands on one of these discs.

Quoted for Truth. This disc will not be economically viable for mass consumers anytime soon. Blu-ray is not the "future", consumers continue to not see any need for the format, and it fails to continue gaining market shares despite Sony killing off HD DVD by buying the studio's support. We will not be using Blu-ray discs in next-gen consoles, what we will use is uncertain, but saying Blu-ray is the only option is asinine.
No I'm not a bitter fanboy/hater/other ad hominems, I also hated the idea of HD DVD, and saw that both formats were rushed and will not succeed DVD.

Pioneer's official statement says that these discs can be read by ALL current and already-released blu-ray players, check their web site news releases, so the naysayers take note.

Also, there are plenty of possibilities for this. How about an entire tv series season on one disc in high def? With lossless soundtracks and extras? How about exceeding the 50gb already available for games? Let's not be too quick to cut down technilogical advancements that will benefit us later on.
