Rumor: PS3 firmware 2.41 up by 'midweek'

Sony has gone dark on the issue since July 2nd, presumably as it tries to figure out why some consoles had adverse reactions to the 2.4 upgrade. We'll update as soon as we receive a response from Sony.

Has anyone here actaully had a problem with the firmware update?
Kola @ Jul 7th 2008 12:01PM
I haven't been using it since it came out all of my games work just fine. And on a side note they all pause whenever i bring up the XMB.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 7th 2008 12:02PM
Co-worker had his machine crash at the license screen during the update process. He rebooted and it was then fine, and he has 2.4 installed and it continues to be fine.
Two other of my friends updated with no issues, many more of my friends didn't get 2.4 before it was pulled.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 7th 2008 3:58PM
I'm playing Lego Star Wars and it doesn't pause when you bring up XMB.
Also, I installed 2.40 without incident (forgot that above).

Only the 360 owners that post in forums, and a handful of other people...

Just keep it until you can enable voice chat.
Tiptup300 @ Jul 7th 2008 1:52PM
And have the ability to listen to music while freaking viewing a friends trophies at the same time!?!?!?
This is why I hate the ps3, it can't do the simple things.
baby sea tuna @ Jul 7th 2008 11:21AM
Whatever. I beat MGS4 already so it's not like I have a reason to even turn the machine back on any time soon anyway.
Well, aside from Mad Men on bluray.
Rodrigo @ Jul 7th 2008 11:31AM

Using "words' like dis & dat saves you that much typing time? I don't think the trade is worth it. In exchange of saving a few moments of time you look like a fool to everyone.
OTAM @ Jul 7th 2008 1:00PM
You're all misunderstanding. He's in fact too broke to buy any other PS3 games >: )

WOW, the anal unit of the grammar police is out in full force today.
Are you guys all over 50 and have nothing better to do than to correct people's spelling and moan about proper English!
Seriously, drop it.
Marty @ Jul 7th 2008 11:28AM
Sony has always been weak on the software end of things (not talking about games, put your flamethrowers down), so I guess I'm not all that surprised.
LordChimp @ Jul 7th 2008 11:29AM
I never even had the chance to download it last week.
Josh @ Jul 7th 2008 5:35PM
Neither did I. And from now on, I'm going to wait a while before updating my firmware each time a new one is released, just to make sure it's not bricking systems around the Internet.
tc @ Jul 7th 2008 11:37AM
joystiq seems to be getting darker with all these black screen images of the PS3 dashboard...i hope sony sorts this out soon and gives me back my pleasently bright blogsite!
Zertoss @ Jul 7th 2008 11:38AM
My Elite 360 decided to red ring on Friday (3-day weekend ruined!) so my PS3 needs some love. My Wii is currently on loan to my cousins so I can focus on other titles.
PSAZNFBY @ Jul 7th 2008 1:19PM
Sony is going to get it right this time. I downloaded the 2.4 update last week before they took it off. Everything looks nicer than Xbox Live and with more updates it should silence all the critics. I think Sony has to get it right because soon it will outpace all of the 360's graphical capabilities due to the Cell's architecture and will become the defacto next gen console, all the new users will want a great online experience. You fell asleep Xbox!
NATO_Duke @ Jul 7th 2008 1:34PM
Calm yourself fanboy.
Slayer @ Jul 7th 2008 4:00PM
What?
severian00 @ Jul 7th 2008 5:39PM
You know what's funny is that i had that same idea back with the original xbox vs. ps2. Guess who was considered the winner last gen. Regardless of hardware specs (which are closer than you want to believe) the only thing that matters to software companies is the speed and efficiency of making more money. That means an easy developement process, larger install base, and larger attach rate. Right now the 360 hits all of those notes and I don't see the PS3 changing that until I can buy it for less than $300.
LameDuck @ Jul 7th 2008 6:35PM
PROTIP: A processor can not push graphic quaility into the 4 dimension. It can only help with data handling.
I have no ideal who gave you fanboys the ideal that a faster processor=better graphics, but it's dead wrong. Can it help push them faster? Yes. Can it put more enemies on the screen? If the graphics chip can handle more, yes. Will it suddenly make Doom 1 look like Crysis on crystal meth? No. I'm so sick of this arguement it isn't even freaking funny.
"Durrr.... Teh CELLZ wil maek photorealistac vidyajames. hurrrrr...." Well f#@K me... All this time I thought that the GRAPHICS CARD pushed out the pretty pictures you see... I hope Balmer hits your stupid ass with a chair.
Hardcore @ Jul 7th 2008 1:44PM
The thing that brings curiosity is that only some old US 60 gig models are affected from what I read so far. (Don't know about Europe) So what kind of glitch happened ?
Sean @ Jul 8th 2008 2:27AM
the problems sound like what I had with a 40 gig ps3, bluetooth connectivity problems, and a few severe cases couldnt load past the wave when you turned it on. The lag is connection driven, I think. BTW, I have an 80 gb ps3, I got the update between 3 and 5 am est, and its AWESOME! The XMB works great in game, and the trophies rock.
GoonieGooGoo @ Jul 7th 2008 2:14PM
Sony should switch to quarterly updates rather than this 'every week a new patch' crap......I hate having to download a patch...THEN install it....to get incremental most of the time marginally worthless features.
uh-oh polio @ Jul 7th 2008 2:50PM
yea cause god forbid you cant play a game the whole 10 seconds it takes to install it.
Faar @ Jul 7th 2008 2:51PM
As much as it pains me to admit it, but you're right. Maybe not about the 'marginally worthless' bit, because a bunch of updates have actually brought really good and useful stuff, but because of the sheer inconvenience of having all of these minor revision patches thrown at us.
It wouldn't be so bad if it just was the major revision patch, but when almost every patch has caused issues of one sort or another for some users/games it becomes a bit annoying. A week or two later and we're hit with a fix - and at least once there was a fix to the fix as I recall.
Sony needs to work harder with the firmware quality assurance bit; for being a fixed piece of hardware the PS3 has had its share of firmware glitches already and then some.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 7th 2008 4:27PM
It's generally not an update a week, it's an update a month. This is a special case because they pulled the last update and are replacing it.
I don't think an update a month is too bad.
TrojanGuy @ Jul 7th 2008 8:41PM
Until then I'll just keep my PS3 off. Just to be safe.
mike @ Jul 8th 2008 1:07PM
