About time.

I might actually pick up SSHD now. Downloaded the demo to see what all the fuss was about and it's definitely quirky enough to warrant a full purchase.

Go for it, its worth it imo.
Eh, another update? Can they patch it so the controller battery doesn't overlap the clock in SD?

Yeah, you should get Super Stardust HD, it's great. I hadn't played it in a while, but these Trophies brought me back to it and now I remember why I love the game so much. It's a great game. One tip for getting Trophies though, go to Arcade Mode and Easy since some of those Trophies are really hard even in easy, that if you go on Normal, well, damn, you're going to have a hard time lol

And about the battery information overlapping the clock. It's not just on SD, it's also on SD, but on SD, it only overlaps the time. You know, honestly, I have no problem with it, it only happens for a few seconds and most of the time I don't even notice it. One problem I have with 2.40 is that my friends list icons take a while to load. Sometimes, I have to go all the way down and back up to see my avatar. I also added a new friend recently and his avatar is that grey smiley face meaning the server's probably having conflict with 2.40 or something.

Hey Johnny. If you've been following this news item (2.40 + Super Stardust High-Definition being the first game to have trophies) you will know the acronym. Do you expect people to type out Metal Gear Solid or are you ok MGS? What about PS3? I'm assuming that one is ok.

Acronyms are a fact of life in gaming and especially on the internet. If I come across one I don't recognise, I google it. First link back on the "SSDH + PS3" search shows you what it is. It would have taken you a hell of a lot less time to do this rather than complaining that someone used an acronym you're not familiar with.

P.S. I'm not American. And why do you associate laziness with being American?

Wow finally even tho my ps3 didnt get bricked having no problems except for the mics there all squeeky and make noise now. That is the only problem i am havibng with alot of players and myself but other then that i love this update. If they could just add more feautres that the 360 has it would would be a amazing system. Keep the updates coming.

Indeed. I don't follow 360 news that much so I'm not sure if they are making any updates to their system.

The fact is: Sony is going to keep improving on the firmware. Cross-game voice support will come along with the other things that are "missing". But I don't see them stopping there.

What else can they give us?

also they should fix issues, like someone mention the battery covering the clock. another being, AN OPTION to remove the clock. I might of wanted the clock before, but i'm sure everyone doesn't want it on display. i did just want the time to appear when pressing the middle button.. keeps things more tidy. an option to display if i have any messages (if i miss the notification, there is no way to tell). an option for a sound to play when a message arrives ..
any many more..

All good suggestions.

I didn't realise the clock is fixed and not an option. And I really can't believe that they didn't notice that the controller power meter was going to overwrite the clock's position!

They'll probably move the battery notification to another place on the dashboard.

Also, how about designing 'real-looking' clocks such as the ones on the windows vista sidebar rather than just the simple date and time using the regular font which I find quite ugly and it's not very easy to read the date.

Like these for example or digital looking ones:

@bennyboy: It's always a pandora's box with these updates. Someone asks for a clock, then they give us a clock. Now someone says it's ugly, let us theme it, now they have to theme the clock. Then someone from the military wants a 24 hour clock, so they make it 24 hours. Then someone wants the clock to have a cuckoo chime on the hour, so they add chimes.

Is there really any end to what people want?

@Popfrogs

They should realise when they add features, they should put options along with it. It's all well and good adding features, but not everyone wants to use those features..
this is how things get messy.

imagine alot more information on screen with no options for them? the XMB will be a mess. the clock is just the start.

Work out well for me too, but I've noticed a few glitches;

* SSHD takes longer time to load. Not sure if this is due to the firmware 2.40 or the game patch (4.00). I would assume the XMB requires more memory to run in-game - but it might be so that Sony tweaked it and optimized it so well that it requires just as much memory as before.

* The sound output cannot be changed trough the in-game XMB, although Sony said it would. I simply cannot change it without quitting the running game!

* The sound output disappeared once while playing SSHD. I checked my sound system, but everything was configured properly (and I didn't change anything in the first hand). So I had to _restart_ the PS3, and then change sound output to SPDIF for it to come back...

* Yeah, the layout issue with clock + battery status...

* Don't hear any sound when unlocking a Trophy - although Sony said there would be. I guess they'll fix this soon enough.

Otherwise - brilliant update! I love in-game XMB, totally.

@sibbor: You know, I actually only heard a noise for a Trophy once. I paused the game and turned the volume really loud, but all the other times, I couldn't hear it. There's a glitch there. And yeah, I also can't change sound output from the in-game XMB. Oh well, not really interested since I have my sound system setup fine, I don't need to change it.

You're not supposed to be able to change the sound output via the in-game XMB. You can change your headset settings and stuff like that - that's in the accessory settings. I suppose that's easy to get confused though.

@Albanian_Killa
Wouldn't have to change sound output either. But I told you the sound disappeared in SSHD, so then I thought I could just change output to HDMI and then back to SPDIF to correct the problem, but simply couldn't.

Q: Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?
A: Yes, sound output changes are supported.

Well can people who have bricked be able to update?

Because as far as I understood on how the bricking occured was that the PS3 downloaded an incomplete FW which managed to get by the PS3's FW Integrity Check.

So when the PS3 restarts it won't use the firmware because it is broken and will refuse to boot.

Otherwise they can always re-format their hard drive in a PC and then put it back in the PS3 to re-format (install the PS3-system on it) again. Or just replace the old, small one with a new and bigger one :)

If those were actually bricked, then no. nothing would fix it, other than sending it back for service. This was NOT bricking systems, some people had problems with some games.

I have 2.40, with no problems, I became addict to send messages friends while playing jajjaj, but now my blue-ray drive is giving the infamous "An error occurred during start operation (80010514)", when starting every disk based game, sometimes the XMB game animation does not play or an icon "Corrupted Data" appears. I dismounted the drive last night, I will open and clean it today, hopefully this fix it. Wish me luck!!!!!

This a unit with more than a year working hard every day, so it is already out of warranty and I live in a country where the PS3 has not been released, so there is no Sony support for it.

there really is no need for Cross-game voice support right now. Hell 90% of PS3 people dont even have mics. I get on full rooms of MGSO or COD4 and only like 2 or 4 people out of 18 even have mics. Its been like that for months now. So why even get voice chat if the other person cant even chat back. lol

You know why people don't talk during MGS games? Because there is already some fool that is yelling at his mom while playing. That's why I turn my mic off and don't participate.

Cross game chat IS needed so I can get all my friends on our own chat talking and working together. If the game chat is working together we'll join it. If not, we'll join our own room and play like that.

Agreed. I just haven't found a good enough reason to game with a weird thing hanging off my ear. Kidding, but I actually have a decent headset for the PC that I've found totally unnecessary and never use. (I'm sure clans are a different story.)

I don't think many would disagree that most of the mic usage on the PS3 is annoying and/or useless. At this point, a mute/disable chat option for most games is much more appealing than a mic of my own.

My top 5 reasons for never using my bluetooth headset:

1. Mic level nearly impossible to control, games change what the system sets.
2. Echo is hard to avoid when you are sitting in the middle of a surround sound field. It annoys me and I'm wary of annoying others (cod4 is really bad about this).
3. Background noise from others. SUPER annoying. Everything from dummies taking phone calls, babies crying in the background, dogs barking, and people yelling at their moms.
4. Nothing to say to others because no games are really squad based yet. SOCOM should change this.
5. Can't hear very well from the right side when my bluetooth headset is on. When you're depending on surround sound, missing the right and right rear is a liability.

I have had no problems (except when I jumped the gun and didn't realize you had to "sync" your trophies in the GAME part of the XMB before it show your profile) I haven't messed around with the in-game XMB too much, but to me, that never really mattered. Also, i definitely hear a sound when I get a trophy, its not a happy/calming feeling like w/ the 360, but it will do it guess. It really sounds like a stupid MIDI sound clip or whatever...

Thanx,

Yeah, I'm having that issue too... and I think I know what it is. You've updated 2.40 and then you want to get a game with trophies: SSHD. But, you get it too late and 2.40 is taken off, and I'm guessing SSHD 4.00 patch was removed at the same time. The game doesn't recognize that there is even an update available.

Ahhh, I'm sorry to say, there's no way you'll be able to access your old hard drive. As soon as you format a new drive, all encryption keys are changed on the system. Thus, your system will not be able to read the old encrypted drive anymore.
