I've had MGS4 for awhile now, and I created a Konami ID/Character for MGO, but still haven't played it...any thoughts on MGO? I'll eventually play it, but in the meantime I'm just wondering if it's an overall fun experience that's worth the time spent in setup.

I'm gonna be 100% honest with you.

I've played many online shooters like Gears of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Unreal Tournament III, Grand Theft Auto IV, Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Team Fortress 2, etc...

I liked Metal Gear Online more than all of those. It's my favorite online game to date. It's really really good. Just imagine playing Metal Gear Solid 4(same engine) with your friends.

General Death - I say without exaggeration this is one of the funnest (most fun?) multiplayer experiences I've had in a LONG time. And believe me, I don't go around playing every multiplayer game that comes out for months on end. Usually I'll play a game online for a couple weeks at most. MGO has been out for almost a month now and I'm still playing it solid several nights a week, for several hours.

Every game mode is great, the powering up is fantastic, the graphics are superb (especially for a multiplayer game, where many get downgraded), the controls (though some will disagree) are smooth ... it really is a great all-around experience. My biggest pet peeve is that you can't search for people if they're not online. So if I'm online and want to add a buddy to my list, he also has to be online at the same time or the server doesn't find him.

Anywho, I would recommend checking it out now that you've done the hardest part (signing up for the ridiculous Konami stuff).

Am I the only idiot in the world that didn't realize MGO was included on the MGS4 disc?

Anyway, fired it up, played it, and it's certainly interesting but it's not nearly as polished as something like COD4. The net code is a little wonky (hit detection is a bid hit or miss) but otherwise it's certainly not the worst online game I've ever played.

It's a very cool mode and you must work as a team to win....but we are talking about PSN here where 90% of the users don't use mics.

People never really stick around when the mode pops up anyway. there are no respawns and all they want is TDM. The rounds usually end up 2 vs 2

I like playing MGO it can be fun at times but the shooting mechanics aren't very good. The damn reticule is so large it fits from the top of the enemies’ head to their chest. It's basically a headshot every time.

As a matter of fact, it definitely happens, especially in a couple of the maps.

PS3F had info on this earlier as well, apparently it just took a couple of days to make its way across the Weblogs, Inc. network.

I'm registered and all ready to go for MGO. Created my person and everything. But I was like "I want to beat MGS4 before I dive into the online play" and then after beating MGS4, I got into skate. of all games. I think I was just worn out from the war. But after skating, I think I'm ready to kill again.

This mode has been available since pretty much a few days after the game launched. I've been playing Team Sneak for quite a while now.

Nice try on making this "news" though.

Moron, this is TEAM sneak, not the mode where 2 teams try to find Snake. In this mode...ah who cares you won't understand anyway.

I realize what TEAM sneak is...again, I've been playing it for quite a while. This is not new. In fact, the only "update" I ever downloaded was when I popped the disc in 2 days after the game launched...since then, I've been able to play TSNE.

Sorry that you had to resort to name calling in order to make yourself feel bigger.

I have heard conflicting things about this game, people either love it or REALLY hate it.

Weird.

All the MGS games are similarly divisive. If you liked MGS1-3, I'm sure you'll love MGS4. If you hated them, don't bother.

So, you're saying last Friday my PS3 connected to the future and downloaded this? Should I leave my PS3 off all day to prevent a time paradox?

You don't have to download anything. It was already in the game's code (probably in the 1.01 patch), it was just activated, server-side, in the game on friday.

For those of you who haven't played MGO, it can be extremely fun. It controls exactly like the single player game, but you're playing against other people instead of AI so it's a lot more exciting. If you're super-competitive/super-serious it's probably not the game to get into because there are a lot of issues with the netcode and the way it handles bad latency, but for the most part it's extremely fun.

There are a few other problems with it as well. The biggest being the fact that it runs off of konami's own system rather than using PSN. It's also rather apparent that Konami plans to try and nickel and dime the userbase as much as they can. For example, you can only have one character per console. So if more than one person uses your PS3 and wants to play you'll have to buy extra character slots which are pretty expensive (relatively). There's also a codec pack that you can buy that gives your character a bunch of extra pre-recorded messages to use. They're also coming out with a DLC pack soon (rumors say it'll be about 12 bucks) that add Johnny and Meryl as playable characters, add some new maps and also allow you to create female characters. Some of this stuff I can understand charging for, but most of it was obviously held back to grab some extra cash from the playerbase.

Anyway, the core gameplay is good enough that you can look past the game's issues, but if it didn't have all of these minor issues it could've been a lot better.

Love MGS4, was disappointed by the online game. I've heard that the controls were patterned after Gears, maybe they should have patterned more of the multiplayer after it too. The guys who say that its better than CoD4 are on crack or just get owned at it or are company plants/moles. With the Konami ID system, this my friends is why PSN sucks. The japanese just haven't truly grasped online gaming.

you can't really blame the psn for konami. it also seems konami has the same plan for live games in the future.
