You may remember in the announcement video for this year's Bungie Day when rascally Luke Smith hinted at the announcement of a new Bungie game. Well, the 7th has come and gone and we're still no closer to knowing what the team is working on after finally undoing the double square knot on Master Chief's apron strings. If yesterday's episode of the Bungie podcast is any indication though, it seems we'll be hearing something at the start of E3.
Here's the exchange between co-hosts Luke Smith and Brian Jarrard you can find at the 90-minute mark of this week's cast, in script form for your reading pleasure:
Jarrard: "Isn't there something going on on July 14th, or something like that?"
Smith: "Yeah, around then."
Jarrard: "Somehow that's sticking in my head for some reason. Guess we'll have to see."
Smith: "Yep, we'll just have to."
So, what could it be? Well, as it's being announced on the same day as the Microsoft press conference, we think either a new 360/PC game or something Halo 3 related is a safe bet. How's that for vague?

That would be the shiznat...as long as they kept the physics the same as the original...and gave the pistol it's just power and awesomeness.

Conker: Live & Reloaded came out only 4 years after Bad Fur Day, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena should be out only 4 / 5 years after the release of Escape From Butcher Bay. It's not implausible to think they would remake Halo: CE, which was infinitely more successful than either Conker BFD or Riddick. They just aren't working on one, but not because they can't...

Yeah, and Bad Fur Day wasn't good. It showed just how bad the original was (no, really).
I thought Dark Athena was a true sequel to EFBB? Even if it is a remake, I'd take that a million times over Halo: CE. Butcher Bay was endlessly more appealing a game than Halo.
And don't compare multiplayer because EFBB didn't have that. And didn't need it. Too many first-person games have multiplayer modes thrown in just because the developers feel they have to. I'll take EFBB, Metroid Prime 3 or Condemned over The Darkness, Prey or Haze any day of the week and twice on Sundays. The former aren't worse because they don't have multiplayer. In fact, they're better because of that exact reason.
Sorry, a little off-topic there.

There was definitely something cool about Riddick, but in all honesty I couldn't finish the game. It just seemed TOO slow. And I understand that it was part stealth, but even Metal Gear and Splinter Cell moved at a quicker pace than that game.

Luke Smith is no Frankie. Wish Frankie wouldn't have left Bungie.

I love Frankie. At least he's still tied to the Halo franchise. I have to admit...I am uber curious as to what he and PJ have been concocting.
Though I wonder how much Haloness E3 can handle when they probably want to not steal too much of Gears of War 2's thunder.

Well, we can choose not to believe their comments earlier and stick to the its going to be halo related... But realistically why would they bother becoming independant of MS if they were just going to make another halo?

The biggest advantage of not being owned by your publisher is that you are not pressured to have a street date set in stone because the stockholders need to get their shares up. They have more say in when it's done. So they wouldn't have to rush Halo 4 out the door.
I have to admit. I'm on the fence. Part of me believes there will be a Halo 4, and part of me feels that Bungie wants to branch out into a different franchise. It wouldn't be the first time. There was Myth and Marathon before it.

A lot of folks think that they are so desperate to not do Halo because of the MS split, yet making a lot of money is what businesses strive for. If you make a candy, and people buy a lot of it - why start selling waffles just to change things?
Waffles are damn good though.

Is Halo Wars finished then?
Seriously what's the point of stoking your game-boner over anything Bungie announce? It'll be good, but it'll also be 2 years until it's playable.
Call me when you're almost finished, Bungie.

It's not going to be a Halo game.
I think it's going to be a platformer in the vein of Mario.
Remember a few months back or perhaps a year when Miyamoto said something to the effect that he could make Halo (it was in relation to a question someone had asked him) well, not that he was being malicious in his comments, but Bungie seemed to take that as a challenge and for a while there was a rumor floating around that they were working on some sort of platformer, in essence accepting Miyamoto sans "challenge" for lack of a better word.
Combine this with the fact that there have been pictures of a little "thing" with a plunger popping up on bungie.net (its also in the Bungie day picture pack) and hes being referred to as the Superintendant and I think what you have is the Bungie take on a Mario type platformer.
If anyone can pull it off it's Bungie. Many have coined Bungie as a one trick pony and if you know there history than you'll also know that they all around make good/great stuff. That's one of the main reasons they left MS as they don't want to be seen as a Halo machine.
Will their be other Halo games from Bungie? I think so, most definetly, but this game IMO is going to be a Mario type platformer and the only real questionis, can Bungie "do it again" for MS, can they be creating a Mario-esque platformer that actually rocks?
Only time will tell, I know I have the superintendant as my gamer pic (my private one) so i'm juiced to hear this.

It probably isn't Halo, and therefore will not be that exciting news. A new IP, while interesting will most likely be anticlimatic.

A new FPS IP hopefully cause Bungie's obviiously good at FPSs so them making another one will be great. They could also bring back Marathon from the dead.
I'm hoping its not Halo 4(If that game ever is created come on a trilogy only fools stick to that line and obviously theres some more things they need to clear up or end like Gravemind) cause I kinda want that to be a game released in the ending years of the 360 when the 360 is about to die so that we can send it out in style hopefully in 2010-11 but not in 09 they need atleast 3-4 years between Halos for the developement time in order to make the game great or pass that.

I'll take that, or as a killer app for the launch of the XBOX 720. The stuff they're pulling off with the latest PC GPUs have me excited for the next generation of consoles. It would be nice to see what they can do with Halo 4 (if they make one) with some more time spent on really nailing the story and having some high res textures. Master Chief looked good in Halo 3, but characters like Sgt. Johnson were ugly compared to the characters we see in Mass Effect and other games.
