With 2.4, if you installed it and booted it once, you were in the clear. There was no reason to be nervous after that.

Heh, there's a new option when you update your firmware, it's "turn system off automatically after update" uhh wtf is the point of that.

So that you can go to work or school, and let it update on its own and know that it won't be on all day.

Ok fine geez, low ranked for my comment.

I guess this will get low ranked too.

You know why this is necessary (for some people) to turn their ps3 off automatically after the update? ....

Because their update takes so damn long to freaking download and install, THAT'S WHY. lolololololol.

The Xbox 360 takes less than a minute if at all, mostly seconds!

Inaccurate. A fried 360 takes zero time to update.**

Actually, for big dashboard updates to the 360, it can take upwards of 20 minutes. I believe the last big dashboard update (fall 2007 was it?) took me about 40 minutes to download and install, not to mention the hovering time it takes post-update on the "Xbox 360" splash screen.

Bad troll is bad.

False, I've had my 360 since launch. Never taken more than a minute on ANY update to the console or patch to a title. FUD spreader...

Time to upgrade to some form of broadband internet service...it has NEVER taken me that long to download an update for the dashboard, and I've had the console since launch...if you DO have broadband service, try not downloading tons of porn/music while your 360 is online...cleans the pipeline to the internets right up.

There's now a 4th tab in the profiles.
It shows the person's last played game, date/time, and information on that game. (what level, or what room, etc)

Just like any system update (360 or PS3), I'll wait until the widespread public approval. I don't want to be one of the folks that has their console go belly-up.

I mean for online friends not real life friends. Also, calling someone instead of IM'ing them would sound like this:

*ring ring ring ring*
-Hey you wanna join the TF2 server I'm on?
-Sure
-Cool
-Did you call just to say that?
-Uhm yeah
-Why didn't you just message me through steam, I've been logged in for the past hour...
-Yeah well, the ability to message people is pointless, since we've got telephones.
-Well for my sake just message me through steam next time
-I refuse!
*hang up*

True, a friend of mine used to join me on games of Day of Defeat before voice chat was added (and when Teamspeak was still buggy as hell), and we used to drain our cellphone batteries while wearing headsets with mic's on into the night...that was cumbersome. I agree with Banks...after witnessing cross-game communication on XBL (which still had its ups and downs), it was hard for me to get used to NOT having it on other systems.

you could already talk to people in game. the cross game chat seems superfluouse. if i'm playing gta, i don't need to talk to someone in warhawk. they can now send me a text or vice versa. if we need to speak i have a phone. its a nice "feature", not a necessary "function".

See that right there makes the ps3 way too much trouble than its worth for the average consumer.

Swapping out hard drives, back up this and that, the constant stream of updates, etc....all this tech stuff that most people really don't understand or want to understand.

The Wii and to a certain extent the 360 are simple and easy to understand. It just seems like sony is making things way more complicated that it should be. At least for gaming.

I'm pretty sure my Wii has had a bunch of updates too. And the swapping the HDD thing wasn't necessary, at least, not for me. Luckily though, I don't have a Red Ring of Solid Snake on my PS3 yet, unlike the 8 360's my neighbor has replaced.

@ ThePerfectCompanion:

The backup utility is one of the simplest backup functions ever created by the hand of mankind. The world is moving towards a much more tech-savvy age, so consumers are going to have to start learning a few things if they want to keep up...or else they can call me and get charged $70/hr to do things that most people with basic reading comprehension skills can accomplish. As console technology adds more and more features, expect more and more complications to arise. It's simply a byproduct of our times. And yes, the 360 and Wii don't have such "complicated" features because they don't have the features at all (not counting memory cards on the Wii...different beast altogether)...good luck backing up all your game saves/settings from those consoles in case of a hard drive's death...because then you'll end up paying Microsoft or Compuzone or whoever to attempt to salvage info from the drives for a few hundred bones.

@ DiRT:

If he's replaced 8 360's, then there truly MUST be a ventilation problem in his home, or he needs to fucking clean the place more often, or quit throwing his working 360's around like old CD's.

I should've clarified that 'backup' comment before people took that the wrong way.
I'm making a backup of my PS3's data because of a couple reasons:

1] It's ALWAYS good to make a backup of your data, no matter what console, handheld, desktop, laptop, et al. you have. That way, should the unfortunate happen, there's at least some silver lining to it.

2] The PS3 has a VERY nice backup feature(among many others), possibly one of the easiest ones on the market today. I highly recommend any & all PS3 owners to use it(at least every 3+ months, depending on usage). The damn machine is basically a computer anyway, you might as well maintain it as well as one. Given the slip-up with the 2.40 firmware update, I might as well make a backup prior to install.

3] Speaking of the PS3 as a PC... With the ability to disk partition and install another operating system(s) other than the XMB; once my new 250GB SATA drive arrives in mail, I'm going to install it along with Linux to the PS3 - which was the main reason I made the comment above.

Apologies to all for the confusion. I'm merely adding justification to a purchase with all the upgrades/tweaks I'm using my PS3 for. :]

It's not TOO hard to believe guys. I'm on 360 number 6, and it's not a ventilation problem because my ps3 is about 5 feet to the left on another shelf and it has yet to...uhh...do whatever a broken ps3 does.

You don't have to backup your PS3. But you CAN. And that's a pretty sweet option. You don't have to replace the hard drive of your PS3, but you CAN, and with an off-the-shelf model. And that's a pretty sweet option.

And the firmware updates are about the easiest thing in the world to perform. You just hit x a few times. Anyone who's ever run any kind of wizard on their PC would be completely comfortable doing it.

I'm on my 4th 360. All extremely well ventilated and kept clean. The first three were all brand new, swapped out in-store, and the one I'm on now was the 3rd one after it was repaired (technically it's my third, but I've had three die due to RROD).

I don't understand why this is hard to believe. Microsoft did extend the warranty to three years for this issue and took a huge financial hit. Do you think that happens when there's not a problem?

Ok I can see that happening because you have swapped them for new ones but for some idiots to say they have had the same console RRoD on them 7 to 8 times is just stupidity. Out of 8 of my buddies 2 have had RRoD, both sent them in for repairs and got them back and have not RRoD since. Been over a year too...

Note that the PS3 backup will only restore to the PS3 you made it on. So if you backup your PS3, and it eats it and Sony replaces it, the restore won't work. This happened to me when my PS3 ate it.

So much for the backups.

xFenixKnightx:
Give up. Even MS knows 360 is unreliable. They wrote down US$1B over it. Over 70% of the people I know have had their 360 eat it, and almost half of us have had it multiple times. I'm no my 4th. And I keep them in the same cabinet as the PS3, which has a temperature controlled fan. It's never been hotter than 103F in there.

The definition of fanboy must be someone who tries to convince the world the 360 hasn't had massive reliablity problems. That's just irrational.

Give up on what? I know it happens, we ALL know it happens! Who the hell is trying to deny it? The point is that maybe 99% of the time once it gets shipped to MS it gets fixed. This jerkoff is saying his shit bricked 8 times. EIGHT fricken times, and thats just complete nonsense. Anymore over 4 times is just plain retarded. Read and pay attn before you go and start talking shit to someone.
