Rock Band 2 could provide download access to all of the tracks featured on the original Rock Band disc, according IGN Xbox 360 Editor Nate Ahearn. Responding to comments made by a poster in an IGN Insider "Grudge Match" that pits Rock Band 2 against Guitar Hero World Tour, Ahearn writes, "Immediately upon purchasing Rock Band 2 you'll have the ability to download a huge library of songs, as well as all of the songs off of the original disc as a free download."
Ahearn has apparently (and probably wrongfully) answered a long-standing question about the seamless continuity between the two catalogs; from the RB1 disc to the RB2 disc. Many purchasers of the original Rock Band -- marketed as a "platform" by its developers -- had hoped that as the franchise inevitably spawned, there would be no need to swap discs. Supposedly, the solution lies in downloading the first game's disc tracks onto the hard drive. Still, there are at least two important questions that need answering: (1) Can we pick and choose our RB1 songs, or do we download all of them as one "free download?" (2) Can any RB2 purchaser access RB1 songs for free, or do we need to validate our ownership of the first game? Expect the full reveal next week.
Update: According to IGN Xbox Team Editor-in-Chief Hilary Goldstein, "Nate goofed in writing that. He hopes that is allowed. Nothing about this has been announced and Nate's never even seen RB2. Sorry, guys." Honest mistake ... or covering tracks? We'll know next week. [Source - IGN Boards (registration required)]

Don't get me wrong, I love James LaBrie. I nearly cried when I heard Innocence Faded on the Score DVD (His vocal chords are back!). I just love Petrucci, Portnoy, Myung, and Rudess even more.

This would be the greatest thing ever if real.

Now the million dollar question for EA is this: If you provide all of these in a download, what is the incentive to buy Rock Band right now, or at least the version with instruments?
Also my recommendation: if you're going to buy Rock Band 2 with instruments, find a cheap copy of rock band disc only and hold on to that bad boy.

I don't see them allowing this, unless they somehow have a proof-of-purchase system that can validate that you've purchased the first Rock Band. Otherwise people that haven't bought the first one get all of its content for free because they've bought the second one? That doesn't make any sense.
If you want to play the songs from the first Rock Band, put the disc in your console. It's that simple. They're already made it easy enough for us to transition by having DLC cross between both games, and this also allows profit to be made from newcomers just buying RB2, as they can go and buy just the disc of RB1 to get those songs.

"Instrumentals often are a showcase of skilled instruemtalists, and they can really show off the best of one's work."
I will agree, but you have to be joking if you think that makes up the majority of GH and Rockband's audience. They're looking for songs with vocal tracks, not orchestrations, (and this comes from someone who plays in a orchestra)
And seriously, do you think the average guitar player is going to be interested in technique songs they can download? Again I hate to say this, but you can already get that stuff elsewhere, for free.
I'm much more interested in Rock Band's concept of transitioning from the fake guitars to real guitars, etc. But I'm sorry, if someone isn't out there on the internet already downloading tabs, free guitar lessons, etc., I don't think GH or even Rock Band for that matter is going to push anyone at least not yet. I play those games because they're fun to play, granted Rock Band has the added ability to help me practice singing and playing at the same time, but when it all comes down to it, these are all things that musicians have been doing for quite a while now, and I don't see GH advancing that at all, sorry, but I'm saying it now, the new features that they're adding are not worth all the hype that they are receiving, there are already much more practical, fully featured products out there on the market, for people who are serious, and with the internet, itsn't not like those products are hidden to those who don't search for them, so I don't see GH being that catalyst, again it's going to end up as a bunch of mario and halo spam, and who knows maybe a tv theme or two.

I'm hoping Nate is an idiot and broke embargo. The clumsy manner of covering this up (edit with no Editor note) makes me think that is true. I guess we'll find out soon enough...

Even if that is true, validation of purchasing RB1 or not, I would just as soon swap the discs than use up the space on the hard drive. It may not seem like too much memory being used, and I am pretty lazy but I'm not that lazy. I happen to doubt this whole thing is true, and it wouldn't make much sense anyway when newcomers to the platform with RB2 would likely go ahead and buy the RB1 disc eventually as well. Even at a discounted price, that's more sales.
Now tell me we've got some new gameplay element or peripheral, etc, and that it works with the RB1 tracks by downloading them, then we've got ourselves a discussion.

Pfft... I don't care about the tracks. What I want to know is can I bring over my wardrobe?
