There have been a bevy of tower defense games in the past months, none of which were able to usurp the king (of our hearts) Desktop Tower Defense 1.5. But Game in a Bottle and Armor Games' new offering GemCraft ... well, it still doesn't, but it does some interesting stuff that we think is definitely worth talking about.
The best way of thinking about the game is a Puzzle Quest-ian take on the TD genre. You're trying to protect your base from oncoming hordes with varying strengths and weaknesses, but instead of building different types of towers, you use mana to create different gems that are placed in towers. Each color has different qualities and if you're willing to spend more mana you can create stronger versions of each, creating a risk/reward question of building a weaker gem or waiting to build a more powerful one.
There's another layer on top of that, though. As you complete stages, you earn experience that you can use to buy more starting gems, a lower mana cost for gems, quicker mana regeneration, etc. And each time you beat a level with more experience, the difference is added to your total. That means that while it may be easy for you to beat the opening stages, if you don't work to get the best score you may not be powerful enough for some of the final conflicts.
There's a lot going on here, some of it working better than others. But who cares what we have to say about it? What's your take on GemCraft?

Hell yes to this game. I hate how addictive it is.
I feel mildly embarrassed playing all these great games on Kongregate with my high powered PC. A Gforce 8600 GT playing flash games. >.>

Ya, I cleared this game and got to level 80 or so. Some people have points in the billions and I honesty can't understand how they did it.

Flash games are so easy to hack it makes keeping high score tables pointless.

Game is too easy, after you get to a certain level, winning each frame with a golden score is trivial, and boring.
And, the ending stinks.

this game blows. I played tower defense alot and its so much better then this game. The whole gems and towers thing is stupid. And theres just oo much going on. The only thing thats good about it is a progressing levels. If they just added those to tower defense it would make that one better. Stuff like skills and jems and mana pool. Bah, there making a tower defense game too complicated. You need to keep these games simple for them to be fun.

You're just a retard who can't understand something so "complex" (Bah, this isn't that terribly complicated, maybe for a flash game, but so fucking what? IT'S AS COMPLEX AS A LOW-GRADE ACTUAL GAME, HOLY SHIT, OH NO).
It's a fine game, by the way.

This is a game I love at the minute. It's a pretty huge game for a free game, and it's easy to pick up and get the idea of how to play. It's got RPG elements and replayability to try and get the hidden pathways as well as to try and get the levels needed for the latter stages. I'm about 2/3 of the way through and been casually playing a level or two every day or two for the past few weeks. Nice game and it has a stylish look about it. If there is ever a sequel then it'd be nice.
Actually, this is a game that I'd get for DS (or Wiiware) if it had some more depth to it and many more levels.

I've been playing this for a couple weeks now, and agreed this game is fun as hell.. but I'm new to 'tower defense' style games, so for me the epic boss battles were a little too hard.
Damn you joystiq, now I'm forced to have another go at it!

Why not link right to the game at http://gameinabottle.com/gemcraft.php rather than at Kongretate which wraps that annoying chat client around the game?
