Ubisoft buys 300, Sin City effects studio
Ubisoft has purchased Hybride Technologies, the Montreal-based visual effects studio behind several commercial, television and film projects; the studio is best known for its work on the films Spy Kids, 300 and Sin City. Ubi CEO Yves Guillemot says the acquisition is part of the company's plans to extend its brands to other forms of entertainment.
Hybride and Ubisoft will move forward by sharing technology and developing tools for video games and visual effects. The acquisition is initially expected to generate sales of 6 -7 million Euros. We're certainly curious to hear what the first game will be that uses Hybride's artists post-purchase in its production.

Well since most of their recent games have been generic crap lately, then this may offer them a lifeline outside the games arena... which they obviously cant handle...

Any news on the Sin City game? I haven't seen much (anything at all) since it was announced a while ago.

I hate to see independent companies gobbled up by larger ones, but for Ubisoft, that seems like a very solid acquisition.

sort of along the lines of what I was wondering. I thought he handled all the effects in house - literally, in his house. I thought he made a full fledged studio for himself there.

Hybride is not located in Montreal, but in Piedmont, about an hour north of Montreal.
crsh @ Jul 9th 2008 9:42AM
I was thinking the same thing, though most people have no idea where Piedmont is, so "Montreal-based" is the inaccurate-but-easy way around that. Then again, I'm sure there are folks who don't know where Montreal is..
