See how Wario Land Shake's using the Wiimote
Maybe we're putting too much pressure on Wario after his delightful minigame outings, but we really expect Nintendo to be able to come up with something better than "Tilt the Wiimote to tilt the cannon." We should also point out that the above video is completely in Japanese, so there's every chance the announcer could be saying "This isn't at all what you'll be doing" or "We've intentionally made this look not fun so you won't expect the fun when it arrives." ... But we doubt it.

This is the one Wii game I'm really anticipating.
offday @ Jul 9th 2008 9:39PM
Me too. And why doesn't it look fun? I usually agree with Joystiq, but not this time. It looks like like a lot of fun. Have you guys been drinking? Actually, no. Then you'd think everything looked fun.
Co @ Jul 9th 2008 10:36PM
Fuckin Joystiq.
Yea let's totally ignore the beautiful hand drawn graphics.
Hate that which you cannot become. Or in this case, hate the console you'll never catch up to! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
deaftly @ Jul 10th 2008 1:24PM
I don't know about that Co, the Wii controls when they do work is great, but thats about only about 25% of the games.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 9th 2008 7:38PM
The video quality is very bad. This is a much better quality video:
http://kotaku.com/5023203/a-reminder-that-wario-land-shake-it-is-awesome-looking
And Joystiq... really. This game looks very good. Classic platformer, with a great art style, and hand draw animation.
And you say it doesnt looks fun, but in the Quantum Solace thread you said that that game looks really good?
I don't know what do you guys expect from a 2D platformer. But this game looks very good. Both graphically and gameplay.

The car chase and the boss battle at the end looks very good. Great animation.
mr nimblewick @ Jul 9th 2008 8:09PM
I agree, this game looks really fun. I'm waring of too much shaking, but I love the aiming by tilt.
Gun Barrier (Gamer Tag) @ Jul 9th 2008 7:40PM
not bad! i could get used to those controlls.
Saltypoison @ Jul 9th 2008 7:41PM
Hmm, I see it more as Nintendo returning to sidescrolling (awesome) with the added functionality of some wiimote gestures. Personally, I think it looks like fun.
Alexisonfire @ Jul 9th 2008 7:41PM
And what do you think they meant by "Shake" anyway?
Not that I like the control scheme, but its kinda exactly what I'd expect from Nintendo.
Who knows? Maybe it will turn out to be good. Doubtful, but you never know.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 9th 2008 7:43PM
Every game that Nintendo has developed with motion controls, all works great.
I don't see why you are doubtful.
Alexisonfire @ Jul 9th 2008 7:51PM
I can see we have veeerrrry different opinions on that subject.
klepto88 @ Jul 9th 2008 8:37PM
Alexis, you're such a grouch! Nintendo don't make bad platformers! What, you're name isn't Alexis? It's actually Alex?! Well I call you Alexis anyway! How do you like me now, grouch?
Alexisonfire @ Jul 10th 2008 6:07AM
Dude, the name IS Alexis. Yeesh.
And not all platformers by nintendo are amazing. Yes, they are quite, quite good at it, but they aren't batting a thousand. Usually, the lackluster ones are developed by companies outside of Nintendo itself, like Wario World (though I do love me some Treasure) and Yoshi Island DS.
I reservations on this games qualities until I play it. Yes, it looks good. In fact, the artwork and animation in the game is excellent. But until I get my hands on it, I'm going to keep my doubts.
DomoBraden @ Jul 9th 2008 7:41PM
I'm a bit skeptical about steering the submarine with the Wiimote, but I think all and all the motion functionality shown looks appropriate. I'm not a big fan of waggle, but I don't really care right now -- the game looks awesome. It looks fun. Wanna fight about it?
juju187 @ Jul 10th 2008 1:20AM
my thought exactly looks like controls would be your biggest enemy at times. graphics look great interactive cartoon family is gonna love this
DomoBraden @ Jul 10th 2008 2:39AM
Punctuation -- it's a good thing.
mike @ Jul 9th 2008 7:45PM
Honestly, I just don't care about motion controls. I bought a wii because I enjoy Nintendo games more than all the others. That's it.
DonWii @ Jul 9th 2008 7:48PM
The game looks amazing. The animation is really good.
koehler83 @ Jul 9th 2008 7:58PM
Wow that looks really good. I haven't seen a 2D platformer that nice.. ever. I hope the sideways wiimote isnt mandatory.
Jaclo @ Jul 9th 2008 7:59PM
Joystiq isn't saying that the GAME looks bad. They are saying that using the controls in such an unnecessary and gimmicky way looks bad.
Which mirrors my comment from about two weeks ago when that first video from this game was shown.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 9th 2008 8:04PM
God forbid an action that requires the character to shake something out of a bag should be, you know, tied to shaking a real-life object...
And the title is Wario Land "Shake"... what do you expected?
Jaclo @ Jul 9th 2008 9:37PM
Yes....god forbid it, please. Just change the name to Wario Land....something else.
Like that other guy said, the controls will probably do nothing to enhance the gameplay, and therefore will seem unnecessary.
Why ruin a perfectly good platformer with stupid controls just to put the Wii Remote to use?
Co @ Jul 9th 2008 10:38PM
Jaclo,
Are you 13? Do you own a 360 and drink Mountain Dew everyday or something?
Jaclo @ Jul 9th 2008 11:08PM
I'm 22 and I own every system. I've yet to play a decent Wii (or PS3) game that features tacked on motion controls is all.
IcedOmega13 @ Jul 10th 2008 12:13AM
but he didn't deny the mountaindew! Shinanagins! ::grabs broomstick::
John McPoop (PSN:johnnynumber5) @ Jul 10th 2008 12:26AM
@Co
You really need to pull the Wii Mote out of your backside. All you do anymore is troll Wi threads. Calling Joystiq names now are we? Don't bite the hand that feeds or daddy might cut your water off.
@Jacio
I think the game looks damn fun but I agree the controls appear to be pretty pointless and only implemented to make use for the Wii mote. I would assume Nintendo would support multiple input devices. I am really feeling this game.
I have yet to play a Wii game that controls better with the Wii Mote as opposed to the classic or Wave Bird. Doesn't exist.
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 10th 2008 1:27AM
I'd say that Mario Kart Wii is best with the Wii Remote+Nunchuk combo than Classic or GameCube controller.
(Wii Remote alone or with Wii Wheel is just messy)
You get analog stick control, and pulling off tricks in mid-air is a simple as shaking the Wii Remote a bit.
Though, if they allowed you to remap controls, Classic/GameCube might've been better (it's annoying how you have to take your thumb off the stick to tap the +Control Pad to do tricks... Why couldn't they have mapped that as a shoulder button or something?!).
Michael @ Jul 13th 2008 12:48PM
Iunno, Joystiq, you're entitled to your opinion... personally, I think the Wiimote controls look cool and unique. It's great for those of us who used to do that automatically (tilt the controller as we steered left and right, etc). I'm really excited for this game.
AmishPhysicist @ Jul 9th 2008 8:13PM
This looks pretty good t'me. Sounds like someone at joystiq is having a bad day or something. I liked the bit w/wario getting flattened by the boulder and riding it out... pretty inventive.
Phil @ Jul 9th 2008 8:20PM
I don't understand why ANYONE is doubtful. It's the classic Wario platforming with a motion based twist for controls, what's NOT to like?
As long as it has the AMAZING platforming and puzzles Wario Land 4 had, without that incredibly steep difficulty for bosses, I'm game.
Jacksons @ Jul 9th 2008 8:22PM
The game looks pretty good, the tacked on waggle controls do not. I'm willing to bet they won't enhance the gameplay at all, and will at best be functional.
Fatass of Rebuttalness @ Jul 9th 2008 8:43PM
I dunno, most Wii games that use motion subtly end up feeling better than games that abuse the hell out of the Wii remote. This control scheme looks perfectly fine to me.
Lijik @ Jul 9th 2008 8:49PM
Meh, its not like the functions the motion controls are being used for would be all that much better with buttons.
skadave @ Jul 9th 2008 8:36PM
Snow Level: Check
Jungle Level: Check
Lava Level: Check

Looks like they got all of the 2D platformer cliches covered. :)
For the record, i love side scrolling 2D platformers with all of the cliches attached.
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 10th 2008 1:27AM
There's a pirate level, too. :)
Kenology @ Jul 9th 2008 8:51PM
An Wario Land game sequel on a home console as opposed to a handheld that is still a 2D sidescroller is enough to make anyone cream his (or her?) pants. I gotta call McElroy out for hating on this one. This game looks awesome. The animation looks very well done and you can tell you'll have to master all of Wario's moves in order to make it to the treasure in each level. I'm salivating already. Joystiq, stop hating. Everyone else, anticipate this game.
HighFiveJesus @ Jul 9th 2008 9:15PM
Why the 2d graphics? I'm all for 2d gameplay but i think it could look great like super mario sunshine and be a crazy adventure. is this a full blown retail wii title? i really like wario ware smooth moves, wish there were more games like it.
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 10th 2008 1:24AM
What's wrong with 2D? Damn kids these days... The game looks better as a hand-drawn 2D title than it would as a 3D title, if you ask me.
And, yes, it's a retail title. I doubt they'd be able to fit all of those anime cutscenes on a WiiWare download.
aristokrat @ Jul 9th 2008 9:21PM
Was that the Ass-Dozer I saw there?
gLitterbug @ Jul 9th 2008 9:33PM
It's getting really tiring to hear people complain about motion controls again and again. Regardless if they are actually tacked on or perfectly fine, the bitching train just keeps on tooting. Oh it's so tiring, oh it doesn't add anything, oh it doesn't suddenly make my penis grow.
It's almost like a certain group of gamers are affraid that they will be forced to do more than press a button or tilt an analog stick if motion controls are not just a novelty, but here to stay.
The same people probably can't even enjoy ringing the bell in Zack and Wiki. Which always manages to bring a boyish grin to my face.
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 10th 2008 1:22AM
It doesn't make my penis grow?!
Damn, I'm selling my Wii right now!
Anam @ Jul 9th 2008 10:21PM
The game itself looks good, but I hope they allow a non-waggle control scheme. While waggle is certainly functional, I doubt it is precise enough for classic-style 2D platformers, which absolutely require tight controls.
Chris @ Jul 9th 2008 11:09PM
"Shake's"? Really?
Chris @ Jul 9th 2008 11:10PM
Never mind, neg me.
Unknown @ Jul 9th 2008 11:17PM
Justin, there wasn't need to be such a Negative Nelly.
This game genuinely looks fun and at least worth a shot.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jul 9th 2008 11:31PM
Honestly, I'd rather shake my wiimote than just press x do every action.
Superstar90 @ Jul 9th 2008 11:46PM
OMG, they should make WarioWare Twisted for the Wii. That was by far the best GBA game ever made. I still play it to this day.
And yes I know that Wii already has Smoothmoves, but Twisted was so much better. Really, the best WarioWare game ever made.
Catloaf @ Jul 9th 2008 11:59PM
Remembering Zelda: Twilight Princess, I think the controls look good. Hitting the ground with a flick of your sounds to be just as natural as a quick waggle to attack.
