Square Enix E3 lineup loaded with sequels, remakes

With 2008's edition of E3 just days away, the role-playing steam engine that is Square Enix has revealed what titles that it will spring on press types as they shuffle past. Of the eleven titles on display, the company's lineup this year is noticeably remake and sequel heavy, with over half of the games representing a return to the well for another drink. Boasting "simultaneous global releases for several platforms," the company has also re-confirmed dates for much of its lineup as well, with the following games also noted as being playable during the show:

Chrono Trigger (DS; Holiday 2008)
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (DS; September 16)
Final Fantasy IV (DS; July 22)
Infinite Undiscovery (Xbox 360; September 2)
Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes (iPod; Now Available)

In addition, the remainder listed below will be shown in non-playable form:

The Last Remnant (Xbox 360, PS3; Winter for Xbox 360, TBA for PS3)
Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP; October 21)
Star Ocean: Second Evolution (PSP; January 6)
Star Ocean: The Last Hope (Xbox 360; 2009)
Exit DS (DS; October 7)
The Legend of Kage 2 (DS; October 7)

And coming soon to a grocery store near you, Star Ocean: Whole Wheat Clusters.

No complaints here. Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant look fantastic. And there has been a depressing shortage of Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest IV in the last 13 / 16 years.

I enjoy Squeenix. I enjoy Squeenix games.

However for all the smack people heap on Nintendo for just reusing the same IPs, I'm starting to get immensely bored with Square doing the same thing.

Agreed. Square remakes the same thing over and over. I don't mind when they do a 3d update like the Final Fantasies, but Chrono Trigger DS is sounding pretty pathetic. As much as I love Chrono Trigger I can't support this. Also I don't understand why some people think Activision is so much better than EA.

There's a good article in the August 2008 issue of EGM about companies not taking chances and sticking to established names due to the cost of making games and the lack of room for failure. This is just another example.

I can understand other companies doing that, but Square Enix has no need to worry. They can easily get a million sales just off of their name being on the box. The World Ends With You was a new IP and it's been sold out for a while.

They have a lot of new games on the DS: The World Ends With You, Sigma Harmonics, Children of Mana, Rocket Slime, Dragon Quest: Joker, Dragon Quest 9, Egg Monster Heroes, Heroes of Mana, Chocobo Tales, Crystal Chronicles 2, FF Tactics 2, Kingdom Hearts, Front Mission, Valkirie Profile.

Yes, they do a lot of remakes, the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games, and now Chrono Trigger, but they also make sequels and new IPs.

I had a 360 for a little over a year, had 2 RROD and then the motherboard fried. I dont give a shit if you think its "blown out of proportion".

The sole reason I only own a PS3 is that fact that the PS3 is the only console I can find in a store that wont break down on me.

From the official statement:

It says only possible on Xbox 360, but they don't list it under Xbox 360 games, or Multiplatform games. I guess they will announce exclusivity at E3?
