Star Wars Retrospective: Episode VI siths through the FPS titles
GameTrailers continues its Star Wars Retrospective by covering the first person shooter games in the galaxy far, far away's oeuvre. This means that there's going to be a lot of Kyle Katarn in this episode, one of the best-known characters outside of the movie sextilogy -- especially to gamers. So get comfortable for this 20-minute episode, or don't, nobody's forcing you to sit down and watch it. *waves hand* Sit down and watch it. This is the retrospective you're looking for.

I like these star wars retrospective things.. but after the first few, it seems like they're trying too hard to stretch this thing out to make it last until the force unleashed drops.
theturtle363 @ Jul 9th 2008 11:31PM
Kyle Katarn is one the most badass Star Wars characters around
Marek Hryc @ Jul 9th 2008 11:41PM
I'm just waiting until they do Shadows of the Empire.
(I think it's the next episode). That game was awesome.
Probably one of the best N64 games.
Roofie @ Jul 9th 2008 11:58PM
Dash Rendar > Kyle Katarn
Jerk Face @ Jul 10th 2008 12:33AM
Shadows was such an awesome game. Really underrated, I think.
jimmygotsmack @ Jul 10th 2008 2:39AM
@Roofie
Pshh, ha, o please, unless you say something like
Dash Rendar = Han Solo, then there would be some valid point to your claim, since that is what Dash Rendar was, a carbon copy of Solo, "while he was in carbonite no less".
Heck, they say it in the book about 5 times.
Katarn FTW
Exodus @ Jul 9th 2008 11:41PM
Kyle Katarn was the most amazing badass that you could play as in the 90s. And no Star Wars character has come close since.
David @ Jul 10th 2008 1:07AM
I dunno. Jar Jar Binks was an amazing character in Lego Star Wars. I praise him constantly as he has the ability to continue dying in Lego Star Wars.
KingOfGods @ Jul 9th 2008 11:41PM
Haha this made me pull out my dusty copy of Jedi Outcast
KingOfGods @ Jul 9th 2008 11:42PM
What's with the comment system....I can't see my post until I post a second time
Sam406 @ Jul 9th 2008 11:55PM
Heh, I remember Jedi Academy, moded the crap out of that game.
FSK405K @ Jul 10th 2008 12:07AM
Dark Forces and Shadows of the Empire were both great. I put in an insane number of hours shaving my time down on the Battle of Hoth and memorizing the biker-smashing (whatever) level. The idea that Rendar is better than Katarn, though? Come on, who's got the light saber and force powers.
jimmygotsmack @ Jul 10th 2008 2:41AM
Agreed
War Machine @ Jul 10th 2008 12:18AM
When are they gonna show the Rogue Squadron series?
Ken Seang @ Jul 10th 2008 1:37AM
Yea, thats like my favorite series in the Star Wars games. O and yea Outcast is one of the best out there. helpusobi 1 was what I used a lot during that game and just messed around.
Obie @ Jul 10th 2008 12:48AM
I love these, high quality all the way.
DangerMouse @ Jul 10th 2008 12:53AM
Too bad Jedi Outcast turned Kyle Katarn into such a god damned sissypants.
The lightsaber mechanics and graphics were the only good features about that game. The level design was boring, and at the mercy of the Quake 3 Engine. The voice acting was half assed, and the story was garbage (Jan gets "killed" by dinosaur sith lord, blah blah) and the AI was pretty damn goofy most of the time. It took way too long to get the lightsaber, and when you do, you're sniped from every which way and hit by grenades from goons with bullshit accuracy. It makes sense, but not very fun. Getting past that yield some decent light saber battles, but it takes too damn long and too much frustration to enjoy it.
DF & JK were excellent games for their time. They haven't aged well, but they're still a blast to play and difficult by design. I wish they never outsourced the series to Raven, and if they happen to revisit it, i hope that Jedi Outcast is ignored.
jimmygotsmack @ Jul 10th 2008 2:53AM
damn reply system...
jimmygotsmack @ Jul 10th 2008 2:52AM
I find you lack of praise disturbing.
Story and voice acting, where half ass, I will agree to that.
Level design, for its time was just as good as anything else that was available.
However, you make it sound like the game was unplayable. Thermal detonators and snipers a problem? Use force speed, or push. Which is what made that game great, the force powers, I hope they took notes from this game for force unleashed. The powers where so well done, its was so fun you push aside an entire wave of stormtroopers, to fling them, and chop them in the air.
I wish other games took notice to how this game did saber combat, at first it seemed simple, but after a little bit of online multiplayer, there was just so much depth. fainting, dodging, parring, they where all there.
With that said, I would be happy if someone made another jedi knight game.
Me @ Jul 10th 2008 4:30AM
I still have jedi knight II: jedi outcast. That was a fun game.
Wilhelm @ Jul 10th 2008 4:54AM
There was guns in Jedi Academy? Wow... I seriously don't remember that.
Can't wait for the next one. The KOTOR series are some of my favorites video games.
Sinister Rouge @ Jul 10th 2008 8:12AM
I bought Jedi Knight recently for £3 in a charity shop. Good times! Aren't Gametrailers forgetting the actually-quite-good Republic Commando, though?
Matt @ Jul 10th 2008 4:56PM
They covered Republic Commando in the episode covering games that were based on the prequel trilogy movies. It's a little weird and I'd actually maybe have preferred if they they just went in chronological release order instead of these strange categories.
capt_carl @ Jul 10th 2008 8:29AM
After watching this, I broke out my copy of Jedi Outcast and reinstalled it. I never got Jedi Academy, but I want to find it somewhere. I wish I had a DOS Legacy machine so I could play Dark Forces again. That game was so badass.
StuScotsLazyEye @ Jul 10th 2008 12:22PM
Jedi Outcast? Game is crap compared to Dark Forces II. You people are too young.
Red Leader @ Jul 10th 2008 4:21PM
I've been waiting for this episode forever. Glad they finally showed Jedi Academy.
Red Leader @ Jul 10th 2008 4:22PM
Glad they finally showed Jedi Academy.
Mindfeeld @ Jul 15th 2008 6:58PM
Just finished a run of Shadows on my N64 last night, still can't find all those damned challenge points. I usually like to whip it out and fly the last mission in freeflight, just love to take me down some tie fighters. Lucas arts should really make another game like this with two player co-op.
