American PSN cards in the strangest places: England

Reader Benny Boy sent us another pic of those North American PSN cards so many people are waiting on. It's not surprising to see these cards being sold as they've been out in Meijer for almost a month now. So why are we running this story? The twist here involves where these cards were found. The card spotting wasn't in the US or even on our continent; it was found in far away England -- land of dragons, knights, and tea.

Benny Boy, a US soldier stationed in England, found the cards on the military base RAF Croughton -- which is used by the US Air Force. We can see the logic starting to play out; cards appear first on American bases, and then now American bases in foreign countries. Still, it's a bit odd to see American cards deployed around the world while the situation at home is seemingly ignored. Sounds a lot like current American politics. Oh, seriously, we did not just go there.

There is a London Bridge in Australia too... although its a rock.... and it fell down a while ago.

I dunno, it makes perfect sense to me. I can just pay for my stuff directly since I live and work here in the US, but if I was overseas for an extended period of time I'd love to be able to snag some of these so I can still buy PSN games to play.

I never really understood buying like gift-cards for myself, like how the other systems are set up. I love how PSN is just a regular store where you don't have to put in a certain amount of money (God I hate that on Wii), you just buy what you want on the spot. AND it's in real dollar figures instead of some retarded points system. At least Wii points are 1:1 but MS points are freakin ridiculous.

The only way I could find the cards to be useful is as gifts. But other than that I just don't see the point. If I was a parent I'd just load up the PSN store with cash for my kid instead of adding a whole other step of going out and seeking some plastic card to buy.

I can see that they are near the country where I live, but these won't work on an EU acount unless I have an American account. Just do it in €'s next time Sony.

ummm why get an american account and u get everythin cheaper plus our american store has always been envied by the brits anyways

It's a sweet deal for you guys. 10 british pounds buys a $20 card (or it should). And it'd be what, about 13 euros?

I was in the marines for 4 years. Any base that you are on is like being in america basically. Merchants are the same and the products they sell are the same. If a marine is stationed in Japan he's not going to see japanese PSN cards on an american base, he's going to see american cards. It's just like an embassy, everything outside is local, everything inside is america no matter where u are. It's not surprising in the slightest ;P

Yea , but while you're there you can go for a walk and get Japanese PSN cards right , and games . . ? (*Considers joining the Army* )

Well Phantom, just be sure to join when Bush is out of the house.

They should start putting those kinds of facts in the recruitment campaigns

Yep, those cards being released has prompted me to import RB2 when it gets released.

its really stupid how they went with it and i doubt they will release the 2nd version before the first evan hits uk/euro market i woudnt mind but a year after release is really taking the piss

yeah american bases are basically treated as america. my friend's car got stolen in japan, and they found it - in a US air base. Therefore, the japanese police could not do anything. Sucks :|

Well I'm sure there would be a market 'off the base' ... for all us UK'ers who have US PSN accounts so we can get demos earlier but cannot buy stuff as it wont let us use our UK credit cards.

(And before anyone says so... yes I know I could setup a virtual online credit card to get around it, but the idea of giving them my account details just scares me!)

Japan is cool....I loved when my dad had gotten stationed in okinawa, I was there for 4 years.....They have arcades out the asshole there....

Can't you use Visa Gift Cards on the PSN? So really there is no difference, and they're more versatile.

I just bought another one on ebay for 34$.

YOOOOOoooo americans put those cards on ebay ....(sooner price will drop for me :D)

Btw dont mention the CC as you need a valid US adress to go along with your CC.

I feel sorry for all you guys. I found them at a local Speedway gas station. (Midwest ~ Central Ohio). If anyone would want to paypal me $25 I would buy one and ship it to you.

It's amazing how long it's taking Sony to get these cards out. I remember a post on the PS blog saying they were just about ready to be shipped out. That was back in December of 2007. Is it really that difficult to distribute these things?

It's a military base, so I'm not really surprised here (that's where we were seeing them in the U.S. initially).

The PlayStation Network Cards I found at Meijer are still there. I still see them every week I go there. There is someone trying to sell them on ebay for $37.69 right now (no joke).

A Sony boss called 'Dave', had a Q&A interview with a dutch gaming TV-programme. He said because in Europe there a so many different countries (and laws and regulations and salestax) it is almost impossible to get these in the stores in Europe. The same goes for the PSN store, Europe actually has a lot of different stores. Every store needs to apply to the rules an laws of that specific country, plus taxes.

He told them Sony is looking for other easy payment methods like Paypal, or iDeal (dutch banks only).
