My thoughts exac... almost, you see I just bought an Xbox...
Seems I might have to show Sony why it would be good to REQUIRE trophies!

Requiring trophies is just dumb. It's a feature of the game and should be decided upon by the creators of the game. requiring it would just make them throw in some half-assed excuse for trophies to meet the arbitrary requirement.

No, its up to the dev's to include them, unlike for the 360 its required to include achievements and xblive features.

I feel the opposite. Bionic Commando was awesome and I really couldn't give two ships about the trophies; why I don't have a 360 now.
Are we really going to hear about it every single time the latest download doesn't support trophies?

@deaftly: Actually you're wrong. Sony has renegotiated some third party contracts specifically requiring devs to include trophy support. This doesn't apply to old games (of course) but does apply to new ones. Matter of fact, this was posted the other day in the Devil May Cry 4 announcement.

Some more details here:

Seriously starting to wonder why Sony botherd to release 2.40. Just the other day i read a quote from Capcom stating that all future games would include trophies, just how far in the future are we talking then?

I hate it when people make these kind of statements. Trophy support JUST came out. These games have probably been 99% complete for a few months at least. You can't just go back and put in trophies.... it's like saying a home builder should add an extra bedroom to his house when all he has left is the landscaping. Yes, he COULD, but it would take way longer and more effort than if it was designed that way in the beginning.

Do you want the titles to be delayed for 3 months so they can add trophy support? Because that's what it would probably take.

Nate,

Your comments are valid, but can't support be added via patch (ala SSHD)?

SSHD was one of the earliest PSN titles and just happened to be the first title to support trophies! If they can do it, I don't see why Capcom (or any other major studio) can't do it.

Devin that logic is flawed. We don't actually know how much time was spent patching trophies into SSHD. Just because it was released in conjunction with 2.40 trophy support doesn't mean it was coded that morning. SSHD was chosen as a priority to get updated because it's being kept alive with the solo add-on and another upcoming multiplayer add-on, so it was in their best interests to get people to revisit it.

Call me old-school but I just enjoy fun games and don't need arbitrary goals to hit to show my friends. Just give me Bionic Commando and 1942 ASAP!

Ok that does it. I'm not picking up this game. What's the point of even having Trophies if no publisher suppports it.

Sony should force them to include Trophies. Isn't that what Microsoft does with their 360 and their achievments?

No, it is not. Achievements is very much something the developers WANT in the games. Since they know that they can sell games on that account.

I will buy these games for the 360, because of the achievements. If they had trophies, I would prolly buy at least one of them for the PS3.

"Perhaps they'll reconsider for future titles down the line."

Or perhaps they'll get their ass going on adding trophies for games not even out yet. I mean honestly I'm no coding wizard, but there is noo way it could be that time consuming to add in a couple of simple events and things needed to do to get a few trophys...

Thank you Capcom..

Well, trophies was not important to them because they didn't have them. I have a 360 and a PS3, and I never bought multiplatform games for the PS3, mostly because of the bad controller and lack of achievements.

It is great fun comparing your score with your friends and most of my friends spend time doing this. Also, we play games more to get the achievements, so you actually get more out of your money.

Of cause, PS3 only owners would not care before, since they then had to admit that their console lacked something (the list is too long as it is).

You're tarring a lot of people with a wide brush there. Lots of PS3 only owners have freely admitted the shortcomings of their console of choice.

What's the point in going on and on about lack of achievements when it's not available? Now that it *is* available this is why people are now complaining about upcoming releases not supporting them.

Common sense really.

I can't believe that people would change their buying habits based on trophies. If a game looks good but doesn't have trophies I'll still buy it. If a game looks bad and does have trophies I'm still not going to buy it. If a I buy a game that happens to have trophies I'll probably try to unlock them just for the fun of it.

Basing a decision to buy or pass on a game just because of trophy support seems kind of ridiculous to me.

But I thought it was easy to convert 360 achievements to PS3 trophies but I guess it ain't that easy. No 3rd party support for Trophies=kinda worthless feature without Home and First parties backing it up. They are asking too much from devs and plus like I said who' serious gonna waste money on multiplat games just to put in trophies.

Well on the blog Capcom stated that Bionic Commando had medals. So i'm guessing its going to be like Devil May cry 4 were you can see in game what your friends have done and high score. So why would they go in and add trophies when the game has its own Medals. Thats just double work for the same thing and paying someone to do extra work.

Screw the medals. Kick them out, smash em on the floor and replace them with Trophies.

Damn it. I was soooo looking forward to playing this game.

To all you guys that complain about people complaing about the lack of Trophy-Support:
Have you ever tried earning a Trophy? I also thought that achievement 360 crap wasn't even worth looking at. How wrong was I... It's totally addictive to earn Trophy after Trophy after Trophy. Just give it a shoot and you'll see.

Sorry, no monetary support for 1942 or Bionic Commando.

This isn't due to lack of trophies per se but due to lack of effort on the publishers part. SONY has committed resources to helping ANY developer add trophies to a game...if developers are not willing to accept this I'm not willing to accept that their PSN game is worthy of my support.

This is pretty much it. Developers at this point are just showing they flat out don't care about the PS3. Sony needs to start mandating trophy support as soon as they can, and not waiting until 2009 to make it mandatory.

Unless they're offering the game at a substantial discount for not having vital content, then I don't see any reason to bother with PS3 games without trophies.

And yes, it is vital at this point in time. No trophies? No money in your pocket.

I know the game is only $10.00, but what harm would it do a patch in the future?

I realize the game is almost complete, but a patch could add Trophy support down the line, and still not effect Capcom from releasing the game on time.

This seems like a sensible solution to me.

too bad, they're losing my money because they didn't want to take the time to complete their products. In fact Capcom has been bleeding money from me as i had every intent on purchasing DMC4 until they announced that they weren't going to support trophys even though they have those obvious unlock screens allready built into the game. Sorry Capcom, i took the money i would have spent on your game and i purchased Burnout Paradise. I am enjoying going back through SSHD that i stopped playing months ago and attaining the individual goals. For me Trophys add a whole new dimension to gameplay and really make games last longer. Bottom line is that releasing a game without it at this point is lazy and if the publishers are not going to support it, i'm not going to support the publisher ....

Don't expect 100% of new games to support trophies immediately after the System Software release, especially from games that aren't far off from release.

Implementing trophies isn't hard, but it's not super quick if you didn't plan to include them from the start. I can't believe people are so dense.

The game HAS a medal system.

All PS3 games can call to the XMB from within the game...no biggie.

Linking the two of those statements into trophy support is also no biggie given the tools and support SONY has pledged.

Post on the Playstation Blog:
"It was too late into development to add trophy support at this time, however, Ben assures me that we’ll have this feature for BCR in the near future!

Also, I can answer some questions for BCR, but I will let Ben Judd answer most of the questions here. He’ll choose a good number of quetions to answer and we’ll post them up on the next BCR update.

I’ll try and answer some of your other questions!"

Chances are the game has already entered certification for both PSN and XBL, meaning its out of their hands for the time being. They plan on ADDING trophies, they're even looking at retro tagging save/clear data.

Don't start teabagging them just yet.. they havent shot down the idea.. its merely an issue of timing and funding (They did settle on a lower price point for the game already)

I don't think you people are grasping the concept correctly. This patch JUST came out. Should Sony enforce trophies in games? Yeah they should, but only for future games. i.e. Not games that have already released or games that are completed. Some of you also act as if they can take the 360 achievements, "copy" them and then "paste" them right onto the ps3 version on go on their merry way. Now while it may not be the hardest thing, they have to set up triggers in the game for these trophies/achievements and that takes a bit more time than one would think.

Again...this game HAS triggers called medals so crossing that info to XMB and Trophies shouldn't be monumental and has nothing to do with Achievements.

Posted from the official PS Blog: A reply from Capcom

"Dan,

Medals are the equivalent to achievements. Basically doing the same things in either version will open up these medals. We are currently reviewing how much work it would take to retro tag save/clear data for trophy support. Certainly though, if it does not require a huge amount of programming time (I.e. money) then we will probably move forward with it.

Ben"
