Report: Infinity Ward 'definitely' working on sci-fi shooter

When Infinity Ward recently re-negotiated its contract with Activision, hints of a new IP were floated about. Now comes word from Xbox World 360 magazine (via CVG) that the Call of Duty 1, 2 and 4 developer is "definitely" working on a new sci-fi shooter.

Although it's hard to imagine the COD series going into space or through multi-dimensional rifts, there is precedence for a sci-fi COD6 rumor. Call Of Duty sequel or original IP, either way, is this the new project they're "excited to be working on?" Until official confirmation (next week, perhaps?), we're definitely filing this under rumor.

Man, that would be outrageous...

This is precisely what I didn't want them to do. There are already enough bad Halo clones out there.

Why can't we get a good Vietnam or Korean War game? There are some incredible stories that could come out of those settings.

While I agree that a Vietnam game would be pretty cool, I doubt that they would go all out with the "sci-fi" theme and make it a Halo clone.

Most likely it will be set in the near future, a la GRAW.

Hell, there were plenty of games and movies and books and shit themed similarly to Halo years before Halo was even an idea. One of those games came from Bungee themselves.

Honestly, Halo was the most overrated piece of garbage series I think I've ever played.

Before the flames come out, think: Halo brought the frat-boy douchebags into our little gaming world. Halo brought us Halo 2, also known as Halo: No Ending. And Halo 3 barraged us with Game Fuel.

As I said the last time this rumor came up, I wish they would spend some more time with the Modern Warfare motif before moving on.

That said, I have great faith in IW to bring us an original and interesting "sci-fi" shooter.

Doesnt seem like a bad idea. Maybe something 100 years into the future and still have it take place on earth...
No need for aliens or anything, just develop a future war scenerio add some futuristic weapons and bam your done.

I'd rather see a game based on an African tribal war. Seriously, that'd be epic.

The game had better be damn good. I'm so sick and tired of the lack of customer support that a mediocre game from them will be easy to pass on.

As was noted last time, "sci-fi" doesn't necessarily mean Halo-esque. It could simply mean something along the lines of Advanced Warfighter. People want to draw all these wild conclusions, but the term "sci-fi" is so absurdly broad there's really no way to know what they are working on.

I mean, they could do a game along the lines of Turning Point and it could still be called Sci-Fi in a way.

It's fine to make a Sci-Fi game but please, lay off the aliens. They've been killed 2008 times.

That's why everyone's so excited Resident Evil 5.

CoD1,CoD2 and CoD4 were good games, but in the end you fought the same war with different weapons,setting and just as retarded enemies.
I know I'm going to get flamed but CoD4 was a reskinned clone.It was a very fun,good-looking clone with great multiplayer but at the end of the day, you were still playing the same Call of Duty 2 you bought in 2005, now with a sprint button.

The entire point in making a new IP is to do something completely different, yet I believe that IW's new franchise will just be CoD4 with future marines fighting future retarded terrorists using future weapons on a future battlefield.Don't believe me? Play Big Red One or CoD3 than jump onto CoD2 and CoD4.You'll be suprised how much better yet how similar both games are.

Yeah you're pretty much correct. While I don't know about this secret sci-fi game, I do agree with what you said about CoD4. Everyone treats Modern Combat as this innovative entry in the Call of Duty series when it's really just the same old same old. You play as a soldier of a group that's dropped in some foreign land to kill nameless terrorists, like that hasn't been done before.

Having said that, innovation isn't the reason why I like the game. It isn't revolutionary, not even close. But it's still a damn fun game.

Because we don't have enough of those...

Just hope its an all new IP. Still wants mah COD5 from them too. People wanna talk up dev Co's like Insomniac or Free Radical? Pfft, IW is a beast! So excited about this!

Why would Activision be flaunting CoD6 at E3 when CoD:W@W is still their next big thing and they don't want to draw attention away from that now do they.

Im just going to say it right now, they should make a "They Live" game. They would have to take a lot of liberties with the story, but running around as Rowdy Roddy Piper fighting a secret war in a densely populated city would make me happy..

But who am I kidding its probibly just going to be COD with lazers, maybe a mech or two..

With Sci-fi I suppose they mean fictional wars probably against Russia or China. For once I would like to play as the Russians in the single player mode.

If the ever do a Halo sort of thing I hope the Main character is an Alien fighting other types of Aliens or something like that, I hate playing as the retarded U.S Marine that can only speak 2 words or stupid one liners in every cut-scene.

Yeah is not the fact that Sony wanted to keep MGS an exclusive or the fact the sales for MGS2 in the xbox were terrible.

Also Sony is stronger in Europe and Japan places where they like games like GTA or FF more than COD. It could do well in Europe but the sales in Japan would be lack luster.
