Sega announces console-specific RTS in Stormrise
Okay class, it's time to take out your notebooks and no. 2 pencils. Today we're going to be learning a new word -- verticality. The word traces its origins back to the Total War chaps at Sega-owned The Creative Assembly, who coined the term to describe the studio's latest project, Stormrise, a new real-time strategy game "built from the ground up" specifically for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Who here can tell the class what verticality means? Billy, put your hand down. No one? Verticality, according to Sega, is a means of allowing players to control multiple layers of units, from the sky to beneath Stormrise's "bleak and barren" earth. Currently gathering resources for a 2009 release, the game represents The Creative Assembly's first attempt at creating a RTS for consoles, so if they fall on their face we must do our best to keep any criticisms constructive. Class dismissed.

WHY do they keep making console specific RTS? They control HORRIBLY compared to the PC versions!
Huey2k2 @ Jul 11th 2008 2:02PM
That used to be very true, but console RTS's are getting much better control wise. Go play C&C3 for the 360 and you will see exactly what I mean.

PeterF @ Jul 11th 2008 2:04PM
I did try CNC3 on the 360, and I OWN it on my PC. I can tell you, the PC version controls 1000 times better!
FOXHOUND @ Jul 11th 2008 2:05PM
Similar to what Joystiq said... constructive critique and possibly a rental will probably happen on this end.
Huey2k2 @ Jul 11th 2008 2:07PM
If you think that C&C3 for the 360 controls that badly, maybe you need to learn to not suck at the game.
I found it very simple to control.
Titanium_Orchid @ Jul 11th 2008 2:07PM
Thats a good question.
I think the consoles need more turn-based strategy games. They control a lot better and generally have a lot more tactical depth
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 11th 2008 2:12PM
I don't see why Microsoft won't just let us use a mouse and keyboard. Then I could play in front of my TV with good controls. RTS console controls are getting better, but I really doubt they will ever be able to beat a PC's controls.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jul 11th 2008 2:15PM
Want to know why? Ask yourself this. Which gaming hardware would make Sega the most money. Releasing the game on the pc, or releasing it on consoles?
PeterF @ Jul 11th 2008 2:32PM
releasing it on both
arrrgh @ Jul 11th 2008 3:15PM
not generally as practical budget wise
Huey2k2 @ Jul 11th 2008 2:01PM
I think RTS's can be good on consoles as long as the controls are well thought out. C&C3 was a good example of this, I thought it was pretty good for the 360.
Here's hoping this one is good.
Huey2k2 @ Jul 11th 2008 2:08PM
Also I've never had problems with the comment system before, but all of a sudden in the last few days it has been very broken. Why is it broken all of a sudden :(
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 11th 2008 2:13PM
I don't understand what happened to it either, whenever I'm on an article and hit refresh the post count goes up and down.
Huey2k2 @ Jul 11th 2008 2:15PM
That's exactly what has been happening to me. The post counts seem to change every 2 seconds, and I have my password saved in my browser and it seems like half the time now it just randomly disappears on me for no reason.
Sometimes I come into posts and some comments that were there before are gone, and then I come back and they're back. It's really weird.
Titanium_Orchid @ Jul 11th 2008 2:44PM
Maybe they want you to refresh the page more often

Zomg Is the curse of the Humming birds!
Joeshie @ Jul 11th 2008 6:46PM
And by "well thought out", I assume you meant "dumbed down enough".
Not to say that console users are dumb, but the fact that a controller will never be able to be quite as nice to control as a mouse/keyboard for RTS.
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Jul 11th 2008 2:13PM
I see what they mean by 'built from the ground up for 360/PS3'. You just can't fit so much brown and green onscreen at once with any last-gen system.
dark_inchworm @ Jul 11th 2008 2:42PM
Ladies and gentlemen, THIS.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jul 11th 2008 2:54PM
When I think back to SMB on the NES my mind is flooded with images dominated by browns, green, and greys.
J.Goodwin @ Jul 11th 2008 2:52PM
SEGA must have made good money on Universe at War.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 11th 2008 2:53PM
I did liked Universe at war, simple yet satisfying.
Too bad I don’t like to play RTS online. Everyone rushes so you can’t have a good fight.
Now that I’m still waiting for Sega to announce a new “Vectorman” or a “Vectorman” FPS.
arrrgh @ Jul 11th 2008 3:16PM
dont be a woman. survive the first rush and move on
Mr.ESC @ Jul 11th 2008 5:40PM
Again everyone rushes and make a huge army made of puny units ,no one waits to create a real army so is kind of boring because every game is the same and yes I survive is just everybody does the same.
Blazur @ Jul 11th 2008 3:30PM
Yeah, good luck competing with SC2. That, and the fact that it's console specific, only dooms the game to failure.
RTS games and consoles don't mix well.
Spybreak @ Jul 11th 2008 3:52PM
I agree, get used to console controls or stop whining. I thought Universe at War's control scheme was great but unfortunately due to the frame rate issues that plagued the game in the beginning, it's patched now, reviewers didn't talk about it as being a step in the right direction but more so about technical flaws.
Evan @ Jul 11th 2008 4:19PM
Wouldn't an RTS work better on the Wii where you have some mouse-like pointing control in which to select and position troops?
heh @ Jul 11th 2008 4:50PM
Could the Wii even be able to have more than 30 units on screen at once? ;o
Evan @ Jul 11th 2008 8:01PM
Nice jab, but completely false. The Wii is quite a bit more powerful than the PC requirements for Starcraft and Warcraft.
Neil @ Jul 11th 2008 4:49PM
Meh it's not like Sega still makes good games, so why even bother get worked up on whether it would control better on a PC or a console?
zaglis @ Jul 11th 2008 6:39PM
''PC development team- Creative Assembly- makes an exclusive CONSOLE RTS''
Eat shit,sega.
Wiinterfang @ Jul 11th 2008 7:13PM
Woa Sega been pimping now! creatin new words an sh*T!!!
JCD @ Jul 12th 2008 5:55PM
Verticality is not a new word.
