First Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe gameplay trailer is toasty
95
The weekend before E3 is a magical time for video game trailer connoisseurs -- many game developers, in an attempt to get a head start on the hype frenzy, will release new media for their blockbuster titles in order to pique the interest of E3 attendees. Not exactly the wisest move, as most of these West Coast-bound bloggers will be spending most of their weekend deciding if it would be a fashion faux pas to bring a fanny pack to the convention, in order to house their digital cameras, iPhones, audio recorders, handheld gaming devices, and their precious energy drinks.
With our staunch anti-fanny pack mentality already set in stone, we're able to skip said deliberation and show you these trailers -- the first of which being the gameplay debut for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. While our mind still boggles at the logistics of how Superman can even feel our measly human punches, the game looks gorgeous, and the mid-air combat between arena tiers looks badass. Hopefully, Midway's E3 booth will give us a chance to get our hands on MK vs. DC, and, as a result, murder some of our favorite childhood heroes.

Superman is vulnerable to magical energies not just kryptonite [sp?]
This backstory wasn't just pulled outta the ass for the game, it was in the comics too. Because the argument is that there is no magical energies in krypton, therefore it is foreign to our man of steel. Hence, just being near the presence of magical energies our Man in tights lose his planet busting strength.

That was displeasing to look at. The motions weren't fluid at all. Only reason I can find for playing this game is killing all the DC heroes once and for all. Besides liking Batman, I was always more of a Marvel fan. This should be Mortal Kombat vs. Marvel because it makes sense for Spiderman to die at the hands of another human as opposed to Superman getting his pussy ass beat.

It certainly looks like Mortal Kombat with it's janky and uninteresting fighting mechanics.

SSB bored me to tears every time I've ever been told to try it...but thanks for acting like your opinion is judge and jury over everybody elses...
I'm not saying mine is, but christ the blind love for the SSB series is quite possible the most annoying Joystiq comment trend ever...for instance, what does THIS game have to do with SSB
Will is be on the Wii? HAHA no
Is it going after the same audience? no
Is it made by Nintendo? no
So why bring up your BS about SSB?
Just curious...

Brawl = Beat 'em up
MK = Fighter
They're both shallow as hell, but while Brawl accepts that and turns itself into a party fighter as a result, MK is lopped into the same genre as other fighters for some reason, which I don't understand.

Brawl is not a Beat 'em Up (although Beat' em Ups are sometimes called 'brawlers').
Beat 'em Ups are games like Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Castle Crashers or my beloved God Hand.
Brawl is a fighter. If you want to get into subclasses, Brawl would be a party fighter while MK would be more along the lines of a technical fighter.

It's really very jerky. Battle animation. Stop. Battle animation 2. Stop. Battle animation 1 again. Stop. Run. Stop. Jump. Stop. Pass. You bet.

Super Smash Bros was fun on the 64 back when it was a fresh take on the genre. Meelee was good but a bit slower then the 64 version. Brawl seems heavy... it's like every character gained weight over the years; all characters are slower. Beyond the 64 version SSB has been the same to me.
As for MK, it's like NOTHING evolved. It's still as stiff, cluncky as before. The difference? The graphics... BIG WOOP.
To me the fighting genre (until proven other wise) has been defined by SSB 64, Soul Calibur 2 (3 was crap and 4 has yet to prove itself) and the early MKs (back where the mechanics were "new") and Street Fighters

Having Superman in this game is the dumbest idea of in the history dumb ideas.

Very jerky animation, reduced blood count, DC crossover, the air combat looks horrible, Teen rating (last news I read it was still going to be). I'll skip if it doesn't improve, which I doubt it will that much and this is coming from a MK fan.

Why does it look so slow? However, saying that, it is the most innovative fighting game I've seen this gen. All the others have looked and played exactly the same as they always do, fast, impossible and nothing like a kung fu movie.

Ugh. That looks so lame. The biggest problem with the MK games since MK V (can't remember it's subtitles, don't care) has been how god damn slow and heavy all the fighters are. It's like they tried to strike a balance between realistic martial arts and fantasy and completely failed.
Also, Brawl is infinitely, undeniably better than any Mortal Kombat game since MK3 (and that's being charitable to 3)

Why is everyone against this? I think it looks pretty decent. The animations are certainly a cut above what I've seen in Soul Calibur IV (where being hit anywhere on the body causes you to trip or being hit in the legs causes you to flip backwards headfirst). Then again, Soul Calibur isn't all that deep, but compared to Mortal Kombat it's the Mariana Trench.

Well that doesn't relate to the animations as opposed to the procedures leading up to them.
It looks like this game as messed all of that up anyway with jerky animation that seems isolated from any fluid type of gameplay.

I can't believe you'd compare this to Soulcalibur, which thus far look stunning. Personally, I'm not against the idea of MK vs DC, I've actually come to think it might be a pretty neat idea.
But as has already been said.. the game appears to still be using dial-a-combo, which ontop of the very awkward and clunky animations, makes the game very slow and just painful to play. Compared to something like Soulcalibur or Tekken that completely fluid, free form gameplay, this is just ridiculous. It was barley acceptable in the past few PS2 games, but in a next-gen game..?

Yours is the only comment in this thread so far that made me think, "Yeah, this guy has to be a kid".
Stop treating Mortal Kombat like it's gold, because this vid shows that shit hasn't changed one bit in all these years, despite numerous tech advances that should have opened the way for better animations, a better fighting system, and less god-awful character design.

Watching the video only made me remember the awesome gameplay of the Marvel Super Heroes / Marvel vs Capcom / Marvel vs Street Fighter series and how bad the Mortal Kombat's was ( and still is ).

The character "idle" animations are always so embarrassing to watch in MK games - they haven't changed since the first one.

I'm a fan of DC and Marvel comics, and I was hoping this would sorta be like the Marvel Vs. Capcom of old. The mechanics and gameplay just look clumsy and half-arsed. If they can take a few cues from somewhere like SC, Tekken or SSB in terms of gameplay and level designs and put some more effort in, it would be awesome.
I also didn't know that Superman could bleed.

they're so stiff, it looks like they're taking turns hitting each other.
its obvious that the DC characters bring lots flavor to the game, But its not enough to make it not suck.

Looks alright I guess. Though I agree with the jerkyness of the character models. That's Mortal Kombat for you. Though I'm still willing to try it. It's too bad that many of you are dead set on hating this game no matter the quality of the game. It could be a decent game.
Also to the people who are still complaining about Superman being included in this game. Who cares? Not like Ryu or Ken being able to fight The Hulk made any sense either.

Yes, but that was so fucking awesome that it didn't matter.
This...'eh...not so awesome. Especially going by previous Mortal Kombats as a guide to potential awesomeness, or lack thereof.

I'm sorry but that's just fucking stupid and it's even dumber than the whole, LOL I CAN'T TAKE MVC SERIOUSLY BECAUSE IT'S IN 2D!!!. MVC is just as every bit as ridiculous as Mortal Kombat vs. Dc. If you have such a problem with Superman being toned down, then you should also have a problem with Ryu being able to go head to head with the Hulk.

I'm just wondering what their excuse for having Superman taking damage is. Other than that, this could be a good game.

They've explained it multiple times(people need to start learning how to read). All of the fighters are stuck in a world where there's magic, therefore certain hero's(like Superman and Flash) are toned down considerably.

I actually did not see that in this article. But then again, that does make sense. Superman normally has no resistance to magic. That's why he has trouble with that Mr....Myzxptl..crap, I can't spell it. But that explanation totally makes sense. Thanks for bringing it to light.

sorry this looks like shit. And the capes look STRAIGHT out of the 90s. You'd think, with a mini-supercomputer at their disposal, Midway could render it so the capes flowed AT ALL like fabric.
God, MK is so tired. I have NO idea why they keep their terrible animation/fighting system going in its undead state. That's what's killed me the most about MK. The characters are usually clever and interesting, the story is alright, but the fighting system itself has ALWAYS been terrible. Always. Vote me down if you have to, but I said it.
