"wasnt that the whole gimmick for elite"

Wasn't the Elite, in itself, just a gimmick?

Lemme see, the separate 60GB hard disk is $100 dollars. So 350-100=250. Plus, the 120GB hard disk is going down $30 to $150. So, doing the math, i'd say that when the separate 60GB hard disk (not 360) releases in October, which is also when the 120GB hard disk lowers its price, the Arcade will become $250 and Elite will become $400. Just my .02

Of course, the 60GB hdd will also include Xbox live stuff, so maybe the $100 is not only for a hard disk. Yeah, it also means that XBox live gold aint becoming free this E3. Craps.

I'm still holding out for 45nm xbox 360's before I take the plunge. I used to have a 360 but sold it because it's way too noisy. I'm happy with my PC and PS3 for now.

45nm 360 is years away. More likely Microsoft will never have the 360 @ 45nm, it will be the Xbox360 sucessor (if there is one, as Xbox has not exactly made much money for shareholders in the last 8 years)

45nm? never gonna happen. the last version will be a unified 65nmCPU/GPU superchip in the "valhalla" 360. that's in '09 though and the next 360 will probably be out in '11. might as well strike now while 360's still relevant...

360 will probably hit 45nm in early to mid 2009. I'm sure they'd love to hit it for Xmas, but given that they have to ramp up production for Xmas in September, and they probably won't want to switch in the middle of the Xmas season, that means 45nm isn't really going to show up until new units are produced after Xmas.

omg whats with all this hating on the xbox? well first you need to own a 360 before you start bashing it, and second, i just want you to play CoD or grid or GTAIV and then go back to dreamcast. you will be amazed.

i love my xbox. online is solid and is the best feature on it, gamerpoints rock, and the games just get better.

im sorry to say but a great majority of people on this blog dont have an current gen system and are bitter because of it. dont hate, all u 12 and 14 year olds, soon u will have jobs and more time to play these awesome titles your missing.

But that's the problem. All those games you mentioned are multiplatform. I already own a PS3, and I'm not in to FPS games, so all there really is is Lost Oddysey and Beautiful Katamari that I'm bothered about, and neither of those has a metascore above 80.

Perhaps your problem is that you're still under the delusion that the 360 only has FPS games? The PS3 actually has more and the 360 easily has the most variety out there.

Just look at the games being released this year. Banjo Kazooie, Halo Wars, Fable 2, Viva Pinata, Gears of War, Too Human - if it proves to be any good.. (which we'll know tomorrow) And not a single one is an FPS.

Obviously, it's going to be different, for different people, but as an owner of all three systems, the 360's line up this year is the only one that really interests me, and unless Nintendo make some really amazing announcements, I don't see that changing.

I'm not remotely interested in any of those games, though. Well, except Fable 2, but that's one game. Banjo Kazooie has ceased to be remotely interesting, as it's quite clear that instead of making a decent game, Rare are just ripping off Ratchet (it's even called nuts and bolts fgs) and adding some dodgy racing bits. Viva Pinata doesn't seem to even have a target audience, though I'm sure it's mildly interesting. Gears of war still plays far too much like a generic fps to me (even though it's really tps) , and the second is promising to be pretty much an EA sequel in the amount of new stuff it offers, so I'm not bothered about that, a halo based console rts sounds hideously duff, even if it is by ensemble, and Too Human? I'm not particularly interested due to how problematic the development sounded, making it sound bodged together, and previews seem to echo this.
There really isn't enough to push me to buy a 360 right now, particularly since they're still the equivalent of $400 in the UK, and that's before buying a live subscription and wireless adaptor.

I suppose Infinite Undiscovery looks like it could be interesting, but that's still only 3 games that I'm even vaguely interested in, and that's not a lineup I'm prepared to spend so much on.

>> How about they add built-in Wi-Fi or something?

Because if they did that would make the 360 a console that uses current generation technology and people don't want that. What people want is the "choice" to have whatever they want in their console.

They don't want built-in Wifi because we are 2008 and Wifi isn't widespread (according to the 360/MS crowd). If you want Wifi, then you have the choice to go out and spend an extra $100 to get it.

People also did not want HDMI in their consoles because it wasn't important to them. When they did decide it was important, they were happy the 1.2 spec and not the current 1.3

People want the choice to overpay for a 120GB HD.

They also don't want the industry standard known as Bluetooth. It's a horrible idea to use industry standards because then you have to compete with the rest of the market and we all know that is not good for profit.

anyone else think that 4 SKUs is going to get really confusing really fast?

Consumer :"Hello I'd like an Xbox 360 for my son"
Sales guy: Ok which version?
Consumer: Version?
Sales guy: yea theres the arcade, the pro, the 60gb and the elite
Consumer: whats the difference?
Sales guy: Price and the harddrive
Consumer: What are the harddrive sizes
Sales guy: no HDD, 20gb, 60gb and 120gb

and at this point you see how trying to get a 360 can become a long ordeal or questions and answers.

I'd like to point out that every video game system has had multiple 'SKU's, except back in the day, we called them bundles. For the NES:

Control Deck
Deluxe Set
NES Action Set
Power Set
Sports Set
Challenge Set
Basic Set
Control Deck 2

Geez! Look at all those SKUs! The consumer must have been so confused that they didn't buy it! Oh wait, 62 million units sold......

to MS, that's a steal, since getting the 20 gb hard drive alone will cost you almost $100. By overpricing one of their products, it makes their other overpriced product seem like a good deal.

$100 can also get you 250GB toshiba laptop hdd for the ps3, fyi.

Put the 20GB HDD on the Arcade. I hope that is what they are planning to do once all the 20GB Pro Consoles are off the market. Continuing to have no HDD is a burden on Microsoft because it limits access to many of the services that they would love to get money for, specifically Xbox Live Arcade and Video Marketplace. Come on Microsoft. Do the right thing and kill the Arcade, or at least shove the 20GB on it. The only repercussion may be that your Memory Card sales would plummet, but in actuality I don't see those getting bought all that often.

Fuuny enough, if you went to go buy a used 360 and 20GB HDD it would cost less than an arcade version.

360 + wired controller = 189.99
20GB Hard Drive = 59.99

Add $10 for the wireless controller and it's still cheaper. Moreover, most used 360s I see out right now actually have an HDMI port.

It seems to me that Microsoft may be exploiting a practice that Sony is using. That is reduce pricing of one model, while introducing another model at the previous price point.

Reducing the pricing on existing models was necessary, but if they introduce another model at the same price point, then what was the whole point? In Sony's case, they're having to play these games, so they can recover costs. In reality, the console isn't going down, but the model they're offering keeps changing. It's kinda a classic bait and switch. Basically the manufacturer is cost costing by using lower cost components.

I still say, as I have always said, the lowest end 360 should include a 20GB hard drive, and it should cost the same as the Wii. Why let Nintendo have total control over the lowest end price point?

Also, I think a $50 price cut is a bit of a mistake. Microsoft did two $50 prices cuts over two years. It almost seems insignificant. I think they would have receive a lot more notice had they just instead performed one $100 price cut. The price cut should have occured before the release of a major title, such as GTAIV, to help boost sales along with the title. That was a missed opportunity by Microsoft.

I really would have liked to seen Microsoft better differentiate themselves in pricing in comparision to the PS3. That they offer a high end model close in pricing, I think helps Sony. For a little more you get a Blu-Ray player.
