Hmm...60 GB or 120 GB. What a tough choice.
Winman2000 @ Jul 14th 2008 1:14AM
might wanna fix that typo in the title.
NoHitHair @ Jul 14th 2008 5:07AM
Did you mean "taking"?
Taken implies whatever would be for the taking has already come to pass, thus past tense.
If you were abbreviating then the proper spelling is "takin'" with the apostrophe to emphasize the slurring of the original word "taking".
A Pissed-off English Gamer @ Jul 14th 2008 1:44PM
Hah, "with the apostrophe to emphasize the slurring of the original word "taking"" It's called an elision, not a slur. And the apostraphe isn't there to emphasize anything, it's there because it's grammatically correct to show when you've mangled a word. Of course, mangled isn't the technical term :-).
But on a more topical note, this might be quite good for my friend who's in need of a 360 yet is quite low in the fiancial department.

I think you probably mean "taking pre-orders"

Sony discontinuing a popular SKU is far more like this discount and new SKU from MS than "Sony promotes GTA4 as 'meant to be played on the PS3' [update]" Who is willing to bet that the 20GB XB360 will be available on retail shelves this holiday season?
LilTmac2003 @ Jul 14th 2008 1:33AM
Since I already own an Xbox 360, I don't plan on buying this.
I just wanted to know, if they are going to sell the 60GB HDD separately?
I own a 20GB, but want a 60GB HDD.
If not, than I might dash out and get a 120GB HDD.
Dirty @ Jul 14th 2008 1:59AM
I would like to know that as well, I have 2 360s and one of them has no hard drive.
eldee @ Jul 14th 2008 1:43AM
no they mean 'taken'. You know.. like this:
"Hey yall, I'm taken my sister out to the bowlin ally to giter a little buzzed before I try to make out wither"

Although I resent buying a ps3, proprietary hardware sucks. Throw me all the proprietary software you want, but seriously I want it all on a open-standard harddrive.
Dwag @ Jul 14th 2008 2:49AM
Just don't get why they would reintroduce a new SKU at 350 when they could easily introduce at 300 and sell millions?
60GB HDDs(I think I saw one for $27 at circuit city) aren't that much money and the 360 is I bet cheaper to produce so why?
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 14th 2008 3:36AM
Standard 2.5" HDDs don't cost that much. Looking at Newegg, you can get a 120GB for as low as $60.
As for why the 360 drive costs almost 3x as much... Well, they claim it's the custom encasing... Riiiiight.
Heh @ Jul 14th 2008 5:41AM
"Well, they claim it's the custom encasing"
Do to every hard drive being made with the very blood of Bill Gates mixed in, they had to sell it at a premium.
Heh @ Jul 14th 2008 5:48AM
I was always afraid this would happen. It started a bit when we first got the 120GB HDD but now it's going to be in full effect.
Microsoft releases 60GB HDD for $100. 20GB dropped in price. *6 monthes later* Microsoft drops 60GB HDD price and makes 120GB standard. * months later* Microsoft drops 120GB price and sells 300GB HDD.
Vicious money-pit the 360 as become, young one. Something I would expect out of Microsoft, too.
creid @ Jul 14th 2008 8:16AM
You're dreading continual product improvement? Interesting.
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jul 14th 2008 7:12PM
Improvement? Only way they can truly IMPROVE 360's storage situation is to allow people to use any old 2.5" HDD, not just the Microsoft branded ones that cost roughly 3x as much as a normal HDD.
anOne @ Jul 14th 2008 7:53AM
I like that they have a 60GB, but hate that that this doesn't really benefit me :-(
charlie w @ Jul 14th 2008 10:52AM
I think it would be foolish to start pre-ordering this just yet... between the arcade at $279, the 20GB at $299, the 60GB at $349 and the 120GB at $449, something has to change.
First of all they probably don't want to have 4 SKUs, it makes a lot of things more complicated. Second of all, $100 more to go from 60GB to 120GB? Who would ever think that was worth it? Third of all, the PS3 is STILL a better deal than any of the Xbox SKUs for what you get. And with games starting to come out for PS3, people are starting to realize that.
My guess: soon they drop the 60GB to $299 and the 120GB to $399 or less. They'll keep a cheaper SKU under the 60GB for $249 to $279, but I don't know if it will come with the 20GB hdd or just the 512MB flash card. The fact that they seem to be using "firesale" tactics on the 20GB model would seem to point to the latter.
So for those with patience:
~$249 arcade SKU
$299 60GB
~$399 120GB Elite
Why is the 40GB PS3 at $399 a MUCH better deal than the 60GB Xbox at $349? Blu-ray player, wifi, rechargable battery pack and charging cable for the included controller, and the fact that unless you're loading serious media, there is almost no practical difference between 40Gb and 60GB. And if you are loading serious media, you probably want the PS3 anyway so you can install your own 200GB+ hdd anyway.
ANTCEP @ Jul 14th 2008 12:02PM
what about backwards compatibility?
Ordeith @ Jul 14th 2008 1:14PM
No,
If you are into serious media you put it on your network in a NAS, PC, or home server so you can access it in more than one room.
For this even the 360 Arcade works great.
dabamf @ Jul 14th 2008 2:11PM
I just upgraded my PS3 to 320 GB for $90, woo.
