Apogee returns from dead to bring new Duke Nukem to handhelds
Apogee Software, a one-time forerunner of shareware titles, is back. According to a press release, the company has reached an "exclusive agreement" with 3D Realms and MachineWorks Northwest LLC to release Duke Nukem Trilogy to the "handheld console market." The brand new game includes episodes Critical Mass, Chain Reaction and Proving Grounds.
No other details are available. Even though 3D Realms is still legally named Apogee Software, the two companies' relationship is unclear. In the press release, Apogee describes itself as "back to re-establish itself as an innovative leader in interactive entertainment." With new, actual Duke Nukem Release Technology©, we'd be hard to argue.

Released 2025
Mr.ESC @ Jul 14th 2008 11:19AM
Hopefully.
deft @ Jul 14th 2008 10:22AM
Maybe that XBLA game isn't that farfetched then.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 14th 2008 10:23AM
Nice. I like to play FPS on the DS. Controls are good.
J-Guy @ Jul 14th 2008 10:51AM
What?! In what way is this true?
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 14th 2008 10:54AM
Well... the stylus acts like a mini-mouse, and the d-pad acts like the AWSD keys. Shoot with the trigger.
I like that setup a lot.
The only problem is that the DS size is very small, and it causes cramps. But the setup is very similar to K+M.
Try Dementium, Call of Duty, Brother in Arms, Metroid...

agreed, the DS needs way more FPS games.
However I'd kind of assumed that these were the old 2d-style Duke Nukem games, as there is no magic "3D"

There is an upcoming FPS title for the DS called Moon. Its by the same developers that did Dementium. Looks very good.
There is also this new upcoming game called Core. It has a style from the shooter of the 90's, kinda like Doom and Duke Nukem.
JCD @ Jul 14th 2008 11:26AM
Fernando, I'd love some of whatever magic drug you're on. FPS on the DS suck. Metroid hurt my hand like a mother.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jul 14th 2008 11:36AM
Then go play dementium, that had some damn good controls for a DS game.
aristokrat @ Jul 14th 2008 11:54AM
Core kinda like Doom? Wasn't it generally agreed upon from that trailer that is was almost a direct rip-off, right down to the 8-bit graphics (or whatever they were then) and pyoo-pyoo sound effects? Granted, graphics don't make a game, and it could be fun based on its gameplay, but that trailer got hated hard here when it was released.
Nigeria @ Jul 14th 2008 11:56AM
But on the down side Dementium may bore you stiff, as was the case with me.
tc @ Jul 14th 2008 12:12PM
"the stylus acts like a mini-mouse"
sure, if you're in the habit of dragging your mouse across your monitor
Nadril @ Jul 14th 2008 10:28AM
When I think the "Duke Nukem Trilogy" I think the old side scrollers.
God that would be awesome. I used to play the shit out of Duke Nukem I+II as a kid.
FOXHOUND @ Jul 14th 2008 10:37AM
That, and HALLOWEEN HARRY for me. :o
Nadril @ Jul 14th 2008 10:39AM
Oh, hell yeah. Apogee was incredible back in the day.
dark_inchworm @ Jul 14th 2008 11:01AM
Gentlemen...
Commander Keen.
Tiptup300 @ Jul 14th 2008 12:30PM
Anyone know the freeware game where you play as a kid in his pajamas?
tacoman @ Jul 14th 2008 10:34AM
Man, I played Duke Nukem 3D way too much in high school; if this one has wi-fi it's so on.
Maverick Saturn @ Jul 14th 2008 10:35AM
I would love to get excited for this, really I would, but this nagging feeling at the back of my mind...this nagging feeling tells me...tells me, don't bother.
juju187 @ Jul 14th 2008 10:49AM
i went with that feeling...
NATO_Duke @ Jul 14th 2008 10:45AM
"3D Realms Entertainment and Pinball Wizards are divisions of Apogee, set up as alias (d/b/a) names." From the 3D Realm site.
Figuring out this kind of crap makes my head hurt. BTW: Anyone want to buy a copy of a NATO_Duke Production, of NATO_Duke's Hamlet II, a story mostly written by NATO_Duke, of NATO_Duke Corp. in conjunction with ukuD_OTAN, Inc. as Co-Producers?
WRE: I own all 3! (4 if you count the DS.) @ Jul 14th 2008 11:04AM
How much?
NATO_Duke @ Jul 14th 2008 11:07AM
Good question, I better call my distributer Duke de NATO, Ltd. and ask.
DangerMouse @ Jul 14th 2008 11:15AM
Don't bother, everyone will just pirate it anyway.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 14th 2008 10:57AM
That's great but they should bring Rise of the Triad to the Ds/Psp or work in the sequel.
chispito @ Jul 14th 2008 12:07PM
No, no, please don't... ungh! (keels over)
t_m @ Jul 14th 2008 11:05AM
he's right that what apogee pioneered would work great now. A browser based, InstantAction style Apogee site, where you could play the first episode of games for free, but need to pay for the others would be great. Or their old games would fit in great on Steam (apogee pack), Wiiware, XBLA, Gametap, etc...
A new ROTT and Comander Keen would rock!
natels @ Jul 14th 2008 11:19AM
Flat tops never looked so bad ass.
juju187 @ Jul 14th 2008 11:40AM
Flat tops never looked so bad, ass.
forgot the comma
NATO_Duke @ Jul 14th 2008 11:46AM
Oh, let me help: "Flat tops never look bad ass."
Corrected it for ya.
cualquiera @ Jul 14th 2008 11:42AM
jazz jackrabbit?
Cherry May @ Jul 14th 2008 11:49AM
That was Epic Megagames, Apogee's 'rival'.
Nacho @ Jul 14th 2008 11:59AM
Oops...I liked it, anyway :P
Leo @ Jul 14th 2008 12:07PM
Crystal Caves was the shit
Daniel @ Jul 14th 2008 1:00PM
And for the consoles.... it will be any game or they just keep us waiting!! As usual
Aaron @ Jul 14th 2008 1:03PM
Give me back my Raptor, you disgusting heathens, and then go back to the hell from whence you came!
Daniel @ Jul 14th 2008 1:05PM
And we the console guys... are we suppoused to wait a little longer?!?!?!?!?!
Zoesch @ Jul 14th 2008 1:46PM
The Duke Nukem sidescrollers on my PSP you say?
*scratches chin* Color me interested!
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Jul 14th 2008 1:57PM
What the hell, Apogee? Remake Commander Keen, you fools!
busydoingnothing @ Jul 14th 2008 5:52PM
Seriously, is Duke even relevant anymore? I mean, back in the early days of 3D, he was the only other game in town besides Quake (in my opinion anyway). And now that we have the latest Grand Theft Auto games, we have something to fill the "T&A in video games" quota. Does anybody really care about Duke anymore?
Dustin @ Jul 15th 2008 4:17AM
yes.
