Optional install is a pretty cool feature. I don't mind the installs on the PS3 when I have used them, and yet it being an option is a pretty big feature.

For me, 16 x 10 support and 8 person chat were the most exicting things I read.

So does this mean with Lost Odysessy, I can install the 4 disc on the HDD and when I want to play the whole game I can just use the 1 disc in the tray?

M$ is definitely not playing around with gaming this year. It looks like someone or something awakened the sleeping giant. I have a feeling that Sony wasn't prepared for all of this. I know I wasn't. I'm still trying to get over that ff thing.

8 person chat is a big deal, too. I like playing Halo online with my friends, but I don't like hearing all the lowlife chatter (and it makes one of my friends go insane with rage). We always go into private chat, but when there's more than 2 of use we just have to mute everyone who speaks.

I wonder if multidisc games (like the newly announced FF) can be completely installed and will only require the first disc. If so, who cares about BR for anything but movies?

If I go online to xbox.com or whatever, and I select "download demo" will it remotely turn on my 360 to start the downloading process? if so, that's total win!

I already use my PSP to download AND INSTALL!!! demos on my ps3 while i'm taking a dump. it's a must have for as slow as a process it is on PS3.

As nice as this feature will be...

Its worthless until I can go and buy a high capacity drive from seagate or other manufacturers and put it into a hard drive enclosure which attaches to my xbox. An enclosure sold by MS, that lets me put a 500GB drive on my xbox.

For gods sake, I can get a 500GB drive from seagate for the price of the 20GB drive.

And being a Microsoft fanboy is so much better?

Um...........okay.

Though now I have sorta given up on the PS3 not because of it losing exclusives and all, but because of its poor build quality, my Blu-Ray drive broke, happening to others, 2.40 and 2.41 messing up PS3s, etc.

@ Nato

Is it still going on...

Plus its a huge clusterfuck of over 300 posts so I'm hoping JOystiq creates a new post to reiterate what we know so far.

And for the record to all the sony fanboys from Day 1 I've said that FFXIII was the game that might make me buy a ps3. Well that's never going to happen now. I've never once said it was a bad game or that it's not important.

God I love my 360!

Awesome. Now for the love of science... lower the price on the 120gb hard drive, or let people use their own hard drives in the 360 like the ps3 does.

This is a VERY COOL feature but most 360 owners have the puny 20gb HDD.

Microsoft, you have so much to download, so much content to offer and then these proprietary, overpriced hard drives!

Why couldn't you have gone Sony's route, let us shove a 320gb 2.5" HDD in there!?!?!?!? : (

I am not paying $180 for the 120gb HDD!!! >: (

Most of the noise older Xbox's make when playing games comes from the DVD drive, so installing games as an *option* for a quieter box could be awesome. Mandatory installs need not apply.

I was hoping MS would also integrate a web browser, as the Wii and PS3 have done.

Sure, my computer nearby will always be a better web browser, but I'd be nice to occasionally browse on my large HDTV. : )

But damn, this is pulling me further from the PS3, now if they can also get an external Blu-Ray drive.......

See, this is what this generation is about. Not about putting a new coat of shiny on everything, but about changing the way we interact with our games. User-generated content, custom avatars, downloadable games, remote content management, and yes, such controller differences as voice recognition, vision cameras, handheld interaction, and waggle. This generation is the Interaction Revolution

I tried to read through most of the comments before posting my comments. I have been telling my frineds that Microsoft should look into game installs for a year now. A low capacity disk like a DVD would not matter so much if you could install full games. most current games fit on a single DVD however as the developers get more familiar with the power of XBOX you can bet that multiple DVD games are gonna be more common. Blue-Ray capacity becomes null and void if you can install games.

Can you fill up you hard drive fast? Yes but I wouldn't expect to keep every game on the drive. Just the one or ones I am playing at the time.

Having disk one in the drive makes sense. Has anyone ever owned a PC? It helps prevent stealing by borrowing someone's game and installing it on your system (Yes, Pc games usually have a work around you pirates!)> If a company can't make money guess what, they go bankrupt and the games you love won't get made.

Less use of the drive = less noise. THank god! My Xbox sound like a plane engine! Cooler system also = good thing!

Great Job Microsoft!

Ok, I would be very excited about this if it didn't say "You will still need the disc in the disc tray to prove you own the game". I used to use GameDrive on the PC which loaded ISO images and it made it very convenient to go to LAN parties (I didn't have to carry my CDs). It would be uber cool if MS would figure out a way to allow this. I know they won't because then people would just rent and load or borrow and load. Maybe when disc media goes away and everything is downloadable then we won't have to worry about tagging media at all.

hi
I have been reading all the write up's about the new 2008 xbox 360 fall dashboard update and it seems that we won't be able to just install the game onto the HDD and play it off the HDD it appears that we will have to still have the game in the tray even though it won't play off the disk. I think this is so that people don't just go down to blockbuster and rent a brand new game and install it on the HDD and save them selves a bit of money. Also i have seen that you guys don't want to upgrade your HDD's to the 120GB HDD because it costs to much, my solution would be to go and buy an external USB HDD from pc-world or somewhere like that because i have seen that you can get a 500GB external HDD from pc-world for round about $100.

You can see where they're coming from with having to put the disk in to combat piracy. It would be nice, however, if you could somehow add the game to your xbox live account as you can with Steam on the PC. You would need to buy the game disk as with HL2, but you could then play it from the drive without needing the disk, and piracy isn't a problem.
