Limited edition red and green Xbox controllers coming Sept. 30 [update]
Want to add a little zing to the plain ol' white and black Xbox 360 color scheme? A Microsoft web page reveals a new limited edition red and black Xbox 360 controller coming on Sept. 30, 2008. The standard wireless controller will come with a matching red rechargeable battery and a play and charge kit for $64.99 (a $5 savings over purchasing them seperately!). We have no idea why Microsoft would reveal a new color so long before the controller is set to be available, but it's release is awfully close to the newly-revealed Gears of War 2 release date of Sept. 9 Nov. 7 [Update: Not sure how I made that ridiculous error. Jet lag, I suppose]. Hmmm ...
[Thanks, Scott]
Update: The Xbox press site also has images from a green version of the controller (shown below the jump along with a higher-res version of the red one). No information about this version, which is not even mentioned in the accompanying press release. [Thanks, jdkay20]

Screw FFXIII, Gears of War, this is what I'm excited about.
BananaBoat @ Jul 14th 2008 7:52PM
Since this controller is red, it damn well better be three times faster than the normal controller.
(anybody? anybody? come on.)
Neebs @ Jul 14th 2008 7:59PM
Banana wouldn't that be if the controller was bl*gets shot*
BananaBoat @ Jul 14th 2008 8:59PM

Tell me about it. Those have to be the ugliest shades of green and red I've seen. Even then... er... woo, new controller colours?
deaftly @ Jul 15th 2008 10:37AM
Fuck that im TOTALLY getting that neon green controller
Scorch @ Jul 14th 2008 7:33PM
Um, Gears of War 2's release date is November 7, not September 9.
Jeff @ Jul 14th 2008 7:37PM
They must have meant nov, which would still place it a month away from gears.
Mac @ Jul 14th 2008 10:24PM
Cliffy B used one onstage today to demo Gears.
Daniel @ Jul 14th 2008 11:45PM
That's true, I thought he would say something about the new controller at the time he was on stage, but he didn't. Mmmmm.... that's weird.

65 dollars for a controller. Bravo Microsoft; I can feel the love.
Roofie @ Jul 14th 2008 7:47PM
No, it's $65 for the controller as well as the kit that charges it. Granted, they are forcing you to buy the kit along with the controller, but then when you want to save money by not buying so many freaking batteries and you purchase a charge kit it wouldn't match and the controller would then look retarded.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Jul 14th 2008 7:34PM
Red 60gb system on the way?
John McPoop (PSN:johnnynumber5) @ Jul 14th 2008 7:34PM
very nice a red controller to match my red 36 ... wait
Bloo @ Jul 14th 2008 7:53PM
And the PS3 has no ga... wait
(Disclaimer: I own a PS3 and PS3 games)
John McPoop (PSN:johnnynumber5) @ Jul 14th 2008 7:58PM
Talk about a low blow!
I guess you could go out and buy a red faceplate to match your red controller. Other than that there is no point what so ever. Much like the pink & Blue controllers already released. It just makes sense to release colors that MATCH a console and not clash with it.
jdkay20 @ Jul 14th 2008 7:35PM
also a green one

Benny @ Jul 14th 2008 7:42PM
That's more like it. I think the red would only look nice with an Elite, so this baby can snuggle up to my Premium.
Creciente @ Jul 14th 2008 7:35PM
I'll be buying this! Looking forward to see more colours in the future.
Has anybody else noticed how CliffyB was playing with this controller during Microsoft's press conference?
Heh @ Jul 14th 2008 7:46PM
Cliff Bleszinski, not CliffyB. CLIFF BLESZINSKI. >.(
bluezy @ Jul 14th 2008 7:36PM
Sept 9th, eh? Did i miss something?
Seroth @ Jul 14th 2008 7:36PM
Cliff Bleszinski was holding a red controller during his presence at Microsoft's conference.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 14th 2008 7:38PM
I'm not buying another controller unless it has teh waggle.
Why is that limited anyway? Is it trying to promote Gears? Because is not doing it,Halo 3 controllers were a lot better and even included a figurine. Also with MS nothing is limited you can still find Legendary editions of Halo 3.
ChooChooCharlie @ Jul 14th 2008 7:50PM
I don't necessarily like the red color myself, but those McFarlane Halo controllers were hideous.
John McPoop (PSN:johnnynumber5) @ Jul 14th 2008 8:00PM
@Mr.Esc
Great point. If the controller had Gears graphics and the extra griptastic feel of the Halo 3 controllers it would be much mo betta.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 14th 2008 7:40PM
Wait a minute Sep 9? I thought it was Nov 7? That's good news for Left 4 Dead.
Dirk Dorkelson @ Jul 14th 2008 7:41PM
Aren't red and black the Netflix colors?

Oops. Sorry.

Benny @ Jul 14th 2008 7:42PM
It's the Red Controller of Death.
Zing!
Russ Crandall @ Jul 14th 2008 7:44PM
Maybe it has a quietly-improved D-Pad? Not likely.
Esko @ Jul 14th 2008 7:44PM
There is also a green one which will retail for $44.99

It's an Evil Avatar controller!

Just because:
Oh good colors, remember that Nintendo? Colors, like the ones you promise us?
I still want a Red Wii or one that looks like a SNES or a Famicom.
Heh @ Jul 14th 2008 7:48PM
Why? You can barely find a Wii right now as it is.
Next year, my brother, next year there will be colours. I promise.
TheOverlord#2 can has Animals Crossing? @ Jul 14th 2008 8:58PM
As much as I would want a red/black Wii, I would hope for faceplates, etc. from Nintendo since they can't even produce enough White Wiis to keep up with demand(supposedly...).
eminemd12obie @ Jul 14th 2008 7:51PM
the red one cliff had was from the special edition GoW Xbox 360 that was shown on gametrailers
Andrew @ Jul 14th 2008 7:56PM
Hmm love that they're releasing controllers in new colours - but I'd appreciate one with a new control pad - that did what I wanted more than 50% of the time... Microsoft...? Please...?
Seriously, any colour is fine, I just find it surprising that such a great controller (built off of the DualShock, Dreamcast, Xbox etc etc) still have such an inferior pad. I mean I'd rather play Street Fighter HD on a NES controller when it drops.
Heh @ Jul 14th 2008 7:57PM
I agree, that D-pad is seriously out of order. It's rather annoying when you push up and it goes left or something of the other.
Vcize @ Jul 14th 2008 7:57PM
Cool, I can't believe that they're selling these for over retail though, as these things are seriously easy to paint. Here's the one I did:

Vcize @ Jul 14th 2008 7:59PM
Ah, nevermind I see it comes w/ a play and charge kit, hence the $65 price.
Still though, it was a good excuse to pimp the pics of the one I made :P
Dwag @ Jul 14th 2008 8:00PM
I'm definitely buying this been waiting for a red controller for a long time.
Social Outlaw @ Jul 14th 2008 8:02PM
They are making red controllers to go with the Gears of War Red 360 Elite that will be coming out in the Fall
matt247 @ Jul 14th 2008 8:04PM
The Gears of War 360 Elite was shown on GameTrailers
andrew @ Jul 14th 2008 8:24PM
Wow, that green controller is....neon.
I think I'll buy it.
Mr.ESC @ Jul 14th 2008 9:36PM
I agree it looks sick...in a good way.
klitorisaurus @ Jul 14th 2008 8:25PM
Red Controller?!? I knew I shoulda bought a 360!
