While there's no shortage of games designed to keeping you humming songs in your head until all you want to do is scream, there's only one that will give you the warm fuzzy feeling that comes from giving back. That game is Ultimate Band, as publisher Disney today linked up with Linkin Park's non-profit, Music for Relief, to help raise awareness of disaster victims and global warming by letting players rock out from the safety of their living rooms.
Sure, it might not be the most altruistic alliance, but Wii rockers can nonetheless look forward to lending their rhythm-keeping talents during a Music for Relief charity concert, which has been added as an in-game venue. Curiously, only the Wii version was mentioned in the announcement, though a DS version of Ultimate Band is also planned. The game will also make a featured appearance during Linkin Park's own Projekt Revolution 2008 tour, kicking off this week in Burgettstown, PA, though we're not sure a game featuring the music of The Who and Devo is exactly poised to rock nu metal fans out of their fishnet socks.

Wait, how does this "give back?" A profit of the sales of the game goes to the charity? Or is it just a virtual version of actually giving back? You know, having a virtual charity concert that generates virtual money. It's virtually like helping people!

Why does Guitar Hero and Rock Band and Dance Dance Revolution exist?
Why does Japan have all of those weird neon techno rhythm games?
It's just one of those things that makes no sense.

I think anyone who has played on a 3d Chart (i.e. rock band, guitar) a 2D chart like that is a HUGE TURN OFF.

If LP has tracks in this game, doesn't that put them in this, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band?

I love Fake Plastic Rock Rhythm Games (FPRRG's, if you want to make an official term out of it), but this is reaching the point where if more clones of Rock Band and Guitar Hero keep popping up, people are going to be confused, and they aren't going to buy more rhythm games. Having two competitors is fine. Hell, 3 is fine. But when you have 5 or 6 companies diving into this genre, it can really only hurt it. I love RB and GH, and while I don't care for Rock Revolution, it does have Pull Me Under by Dream Theater, so it already gets a 8/10 for me. (Pull me under pull me under pull me under Im not afraid!)
But just still... the thought of the Rhythm Game Crash of 09'-10' depresses me. It's going to happen. I hope the fad dies, and the only two FUN games are left. (with possibilty of RR, but doubt it. 2D charts are gross)
I don't want one game to "win", because competition is good. Drives some of the prices down. (Like the Rock Band price cuts when GH:WT news was coming out last month.) Also, I doubt Rock Band 2 would be as awesome as it is without Guitar Hero over on the other side of the river building something that looks like it might just be a litter bit better.
They better put Hyperspeed in RB2, though. That is my only complaint about it. (Well, and the lack of a "Detailed Breakdown" screen)
